What should I wear to a black tie celebrity wedding?

Fushcia · 12/05/2026 20:40

A friend is getting married in NYC later this year. The dress code is black tie. The venue has not been disclosed and will not be disclosed until the day of the event to avoid media attention as they are within the celebrity sphere (I know them through family and am very much not from this world)
Any advice on something suitably glamorous given there may be a few A listers present and I don’t want to look out of place? I’m 5’7, size 8-10. Budget not really an issue

I’m going to say Harry & Zoe would love this dress 😉https://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/product/victoria-beckham-isabella-satin-gown_R04619114/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#colour=Cinnabar%20Red

LOVE the colour and it’s covered enough for church.
Also it’s not ‘a summer dress so I’m freezing cold’ .

I think this ticks lots of boxes, & is a beautiful shape & colour (even though VB doesn't do much more than put her name to clothes that other more talented individuals create ...).

It's a British label, is a gorgeous colour for mid-autumn, & is a modern take on (completely ripped off from?!) 1930s design. It's not overly blingy or exposed either, which I think some of the previous suggestions are.

BuntyBeaufort · 13/05/2026 19:20

Just a thought, isn’t there some strange American thing that wearing red at a wedding signifies you’ve sleep with the groom??!!
If he’s a hot celeb you might want to give try it - it would do your street cred no end of good 🤣

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 13/05/2026 19:21

I’ve been to a wedding like this. Best advice don’t overthink it. Nobody will care, and no one will be looking.

You'll also be surprised by how casual some of the a-listers are.

Hold your head high and know you have as much right as anyone to be there and you won’t be out of place.

As an American, I can confirm that black is NOT really fine for a wedding.

The teal coloured halter-top gown mentioned above is great and I'd want a wrap/cardigan on hand in case the ceremony is in a church and also to ward off drafts. October in NY can be chilly.

The beautiful Marchesa dress linked above is not really suitable. It is a beautiful dress and perfect for an evening party but NOT a wedding dress mainly b/c it's too blingy (imagine it with a different background colour) but also b/c it's black.

But "as an American" you can't really speak for 350 million people! Even if you've been to hundreds of weddings, that's just your own personal experience at those particular occasions?

It might not be seen much in some areas of the US - but it's most definitely an accepted thing in big multicultural cities like London & New York, & has been for a long time.

Fushcia · 13/05/2026 19:34

Thanks for all the advice so far! I can come back afterwards with full details.

I am leaning towards a VB option as I’ve realised the red one I liked above is 100% polyester which I think is unavailable for that price.

Someone also recommended this option - tell me honestly if it’s awful as I’m torn between love/hate:

I like the shape & style but think the floral makes its too fussy. It’s a dress that could wear you if that makes sense.

Ivy Gown - Lavender Blue | Dresses & Jumpsuits | Temperley London – Temperley London (UK) https://share.google/9Zxepd6Bq31NISTsQ

You might find Temperley a bit fussy? But they do some really pretty dresses which would look great on someone with your figure!

Roksanda might be an option?

I think Roksanda is another good option - always a great use of colour & form (unsurprisingly as she trained as an architect). And British-based.

Stopsnowing · 12/05/2026 22:21

This is terrific!

I like some of her dresses - the more romantic frou-frou ones. But I think this looks rather old-fashioned & dated, & far too fussy. If it's at all NY, it's more the kind of dress I imagine being worn by the social X-ray types of the 80s.

I'm a native New Yorker and I've seen loads of black at weddings, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. October is a weird month climate-wise, it can be very warm or quite cool, so I wouldn't go with a heavy winter-type dress, but I'd plan on some kind of wrap if sleeveless.

I've just bought this for a wedding in September https://www.mytheresa.com/gb/en/women/zimmermann-luna-bandeau-jersey-gown-pink-p01154430

And I wore this to one recently
https://saloniworld.com/products/michelle-dress-in-nerine-azure

They're both beautiful dresses - lucky you! I really love the rich emerald green colourway of the Saloni one (plus it's another British-based label) - & the bow detail at the back is fabulous! It's also 100% silk.

@MeetMeOnTheCorner Those are lovely, but more British wedding. They're a bit too ruffly and flouncy for NYC black tie

That's gorgeous. I love the gemstone strap detail.

pinkpie · 13/05/2026 20:12

Victoria Beckham, English, elegant and you’re the perfect size for her dresses.

That's gorgeous. I love the gemstone strap detail.

I really want the @Fushcia to get it for pleasure as it’s so simple looking, but not! Beautiful

I've just discovered Solace London and I'm torn between these two (available in other colours).

I find them very constrained-looking. Also a bit less contemporary than some other options. And wearing such a tight form-fitting (100% heavy polyester crèpe) dress head-to-toe - I swear by Mitchum deodorant, but not sure anyone's armpits would last the night in that!

Though maybe it doesn't matter - as the model looks as if she wouldn't be able to raise her arms! Definitely no dancing ...

This one, suggested by @Levithecat is very on point

https://www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/roksanda/dresses/gowns/amanita-draped-two-tone-silk-satin-gown/46376663163031635

I do agree with @SpuytenDuyvil - sleek, lots of skin, and yes, heels.

I quite like it - though I think the colour is quite flat compared to the VB cinnabar red gown. That's in photos though - maybe not in the flesh. But I think there are other nicer Roksanda dresses.

I don’t know for sure but assume not as there is a separate cocktail reception the day before (I also need a dress for that!).

This red one is fabulous, but 100% polyester 😳. Could you find an amazing atelier to custom make one for you ?

IMO yes - especially compared to the Balmain one. It's very nice, but just lacks the elegance & classiness that the Balmain one has. And if you're going to spend £2.5K or more on a dress, it should at least be silk, not 100% polyester masquerading as silk taffeta.

That would really annoy me!

EleanorMc67 · 13/05/2026 20:43

Drivingmissrangey · 13/05/2026 00:16

I would second the VB suggestions. The tailoring is amazing.

I’m also a fan of some of the ghost dresses for black tie. Very classic. https://www.ghost.co.uk/angelica-navy-high-neck-satin-maxi-dress-d12g003-k10

Funnily enough, that Ghost dress is very similar to the Saloni one! It's a lovely dress, from a British brand - & there would almost certainly be no danger of anyone else spending that little!

And at £179 instead of £895, you'd have enough for a bag of chips on the way home ...

Are you going to NYC a few days before?
if I were you I’d use Rent the Runway there - they have some lovely event dresses and arrive quite quickly in New York (assume you are there for a few days before)

Fushcia · 13/05/2026 20:49

This first one I missed and is lovely, thank you. Not too bridesmaidy which some of the others have veered towards

Not sure if any of these would be suitable but I absolutely love Alice Temperley and some of these are certainly high end. Edited to say she’s a Somerset based British designer. Gorgeous quality, I have one of her bags (still hoping for an occasion to wear one of the dresses!).

@oneoneone OP I assume is British! Maybe we don’t have to copy the Americans for once? It’s better to be yourself but might be a bit chilly for October? Need a fur jacket!

Those particular Zimmerman dresses are, I think, too summery. But I agree that if the OP is British, attending a NY wedding, then she doesn't need to wear something that's broadly the same style as what it sounds like everyone else will be wearing.

In fact, I would ensure that I didn't. They'll probably love it if she wears something a bit different, that stands out from the sea of single-coloured slinky body-con gowns ...

Fake fur, of course ...?!

I love this too! I think the orange colour would look much better on me though as muted colours tend to wash me out. Is orange too intense for a wedding?

What's your colouring, OP?

Fake fur, of course ...?!

Or vintage. Arguably more ethical than new fake fur.
