If you had to pick one skincare product that really works what would it be and why?

Can’t afford a whole new routine but would like to introduce something - maybe a serum - to up my skincare game a bit.

Squalane oil.

I’ve had microneedling, retinol, facials and this basically gives the same effect.

If I had to choose one, I think it would be a good overnight moisturiser, I have used Neal’s Yard Rose Beauty Balm for years and couldn’t be without it. In terms of serums, I think a vitamin C serum in the morning is the one thing I’m consistent with. And SPF of course!

Cerave retinol serum, seen a massive change to my skin

HoldMyWine · 21/04/2026 22:14

Tretinoin, makes my skin glow and less wrinkly

GirlNeedsGlowUp · 21/04/2026 22:17

Clarins Double Serum.

You can buy them in Clarins outlet to save money.

MegMortimer · 21/04/2026 22:17

SPF, used every day.

I’m currently nagging my mid 20s daughter to start using SPF - I wish I had at her age!

Niacinamide for me. I have oily skin and it’s a game changer

Iatethelastbiscuit · Yesterday 07:26

Retinol all the way. I use medik8 cos they go up to 10 in strength. It’s the one product that research has shown to have genuine anti-ageing effects

DailyMaui · Yesterday 07:54

Tretinoin. Nothing works as well for skin as you age.

But SPF every day is an absolute necessity.

It goes up to 20.

Tret is the thing I’d prioritise as it keeps my break ours at bay as well as helping with anti aging.

Ooh I didn’t know that. In that case I’ll work my way up from 10!

Water

boring but true.

TheOGCCL · Yesterday 09:31

That’s a tough question but tretinoin.

Agree with this. I use a cheap £2 moisturiser on my skin, no fancy skincare. I'm mid 40s and don't have one wrinkle. I drink so much water, always have done. Could be that, who knows

Tretinoin and SPF can’t have tret without the spf!

Girlwithavibe · Yesterday 09:43

Azeliac acid!!!

Panticus · Yesterday 09:47

Agree with Tret, but I also adore Cos-RX Snail Mucin and wouldn’t be without it.

Lelot · Yesterday 10:09

Trifarotene

Squirrelsnut · Yesterday 10:12

Aveeno. Boring and unglamorous but no other moisturiser makes my skin so soft and hydrated all day.

GameOfJones · Yesterday 10:16

The only answer really is a proper SPF every day so I'll take that as a given.

The other product that has made a noticeable difference to me is Vitamin C serum in the mornings. I use other skincare products but the Vitamin C is the only one that I've really noticed having an effect. The rest e.g my milky toner and night cream I just use because they're nice and hopefully 70 year old me will be glad I did!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 10:17

Retinol (ordinary) and spf 50 every day.

Oh when I used my vit c serum it made my face feel nice. Must repurchase. When I used an upcircle coffee one though as I ran out of the vit c one it went all greasy. I have dry combo skin.

I’m similar re moisturiser but use other stuff. I used to buy expensive ones in my teens and 20s but since 30s no more. Lancôme did a great one when I was 18, but it’s discontinued a long time ago! The other ones I don’t rate even crème de la mer.
