If you had to pick one skincare product that really works what would it be and why?

Can’t afford a whole new routine but would like to introduce something - maybe a serum - to up my skincare game a bit.

Tretinoin. Without that and sunscreen, everything else is a bit pointless.

I use Rosehip oil from The Ordinary, it’s so good. My skin looks and feels lovely with a glow. It’s packed full of goodness and pretty cheap 🤗

Do you think this would help my neck and decolletage area? I'm in my 50s

Augustus40 · 24/04/2026 11:33

E lemis bliss capsules

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 24/04/2026 12:50

Vitamin C, tret, daily spf. They’re my must halves.

I also double cleanse in the evening, and find a good richer nighttime moisturiser makes a difference to how I look in the morning.

BridgetJonesV2 · 24/04/2026 12:51

Liz Earle superskin cleansing balm. It's rich, oily and is perfect for my face as I then don't need moisturiser on top. Use it morning and night.

queenceleste · 24/04/2026 13:03

This is my staple face cream and has been for years.

Neal’s yard is also excellent.

I’d give it a try, it isn’t too expensive and worth a try 🤗

I think so. I've switched to the newer version, the Fermented Rosehip Seed Oil. I think it's slightly more firming, but not organic, like the original.

I also love Weleda Skin Food Night cream, they seem to work well together.

Bestfootforward11 · 24/04/2026 20:36

I’ve found that some of the Lidl skincare products have been really good. Worth a try if you don’t want to spend too much. Agree with others re vit c serum

Flatinbed · 24/04/2026 20:45

Weleda skin food. I used to have dry patchy skin and this really moisterises properly. Also leaves a glow.

But, to really see a difference: glowy, brighter, years younger - is a proper hot hot sweaty sauna.

Agree with all of this!

I would add Niod’s copper amino isolate serum on nights that you’re not using tretinoin. And a good hydrating toner – Hada Labo gokujyun premium is my favourite and it’s very soothing.

Dermatica prescriptions. Managed by the dermatologists (by regular photos) , changed and strengthened accordingly.

I had really bad acne cleared on prescription with a treatment cream and now tret, which is managed in increasing strength. No trial and error, fantastic results.

Clear, tight, glowing skin.
I now use Cerave face wash and moisturiser with the SPF50 contained but have used Simple or Superdrug Vitamin E range.
I read some of the threads on here for advice and discount codes.

Some pp are definitely cheating by naming more than one skin care product!

If I had to name one product then definitely retinol serum - I use Neutrogena Retinal boost intense night serum - has made a really noticeable improvement to my skin since I started using it.

Same with Aldi. They did a Elemis Marine Cream dupe that was £8 a jar and just as good!

Tretinoin, makes my skin glow and less wrinkly

Where do you purchase your tretinoin from please? Is it from an online dermatologist? I have melasma and have read that Tret and hydroquinine might be a good combination?

It goes up to 20.

It goes up to 24 now.

Which one do you use?

I have chopped and changed a bit. I was using one called Florence Organic that you can buy on Amazon which I really liked apart from the smell. I'm currently using the Garnier Vitamin C serum which I'm enjoying.

This one is also very good: e.l.f. SKIN Vitamin C Brightening Serum 30ml - Boots https://share.google/6n7UIa7r5TrpZnDyP

Whowhatwerewolf · 25/04/2026 06:25

Tretinoin. I order it directly from India (AllDayChemist). It's the real deal. No need to buy expensive retinol as tretinoin is more powerful unless your skin absolutely can't handle it (but my skin is very sensitive and have been able to introduce it gradually). And yes you must absolutely use SPF with it (you should anyway but especially if using tretinoin).

It's the best. It's the combo Obagi use.

If I had to choose one, I think it would be a good overnight moisturiser, I have used Neal’s Yard Rose Beauty Balm for years and couldn’t be without it. In terms of serums, I think a vitamin C serum in the morning is the one thing I’m consistent with. And SPF of course!

Totally agree, came on here to say Neals Yard Rose Beauty Balm. I am 55 and don't have even a hint of a wrinkle.

Neals Yard Wild rose Beauty Balm would also help here; it helps everywhere. It is hands down the best product I have ever used.

Nopenousername · 25/04/2026 07:11

If you introduce any of the ones already mentioned, you will also need SPF so if you can only afford one then it will need to be an SPF. Generally speaking there is only evidence behind Retinol, Vit C and an SPF so all the other actives/ ingredients are more of a “nice to have” rather than ingredients with scientific backing

La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume, apply before bed as a night mask of sorts. Have never ONCE woke up and my skin not looked 10x better with this stuff. Amazing with sunburn too.
I am very careful with my skin barrier, so im looking at all these other suggestions with interest - if anyone whose skin gets on really well with La Roche Posay Cicaplast or Effaclar, and has found any other serums etc that work for their skin, im all ears!

I use Cicaplast as the final "sandwich" to my Tret application at bedtime. It really helps avoid the dryness that Tret can cause.

If you're a fan of the brand, I'd recommend La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum after morning cleansing, followed by the Hyalu B5 suractivee face cream with SPF 30.

Nanda66 · 25/04/2026 08:03

Lancôme Renergie CR Triple Serum. Amazing stuff. I saw a recommendation and bought it and I can’t believe the difference it’s made to my skin in just a few weeks. Expensive but worth it.
