How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

I'm the opposite, as I get older I have less and less hair on my body. I no longer need to shave my legs or armpits and I have no hair at all on my forearms. Conversely, my pubic hair is lush and still requires grooming and fortunately so does the hair on my head 😀

Well youre lucky as mine started at 30!

i can’t see anyone mentioning boob hair. They’re grim. And as my eye sight gets worse they are much harder to seek and destroy.

same

Ideal!

Honestly don't worry about it, it's perfectly normal.
Due to PCOS I've had this issue since my mid 20s and has become worse since the menopause 🙄

CandidHelper · 09/12/2025 20:19

Wait till you buy tweezers for your car..can't beat plucking a annoying hair while in a queue!!

Justchillinhere · 09/12/2025 20:38

I take tweezers to work and pluck away when my colleagues on break if some are bothering me as i continually check with my finger tips, very satisfying, started in my 40s

readingmakesmehappy · 09/12/2025 20:43

I'm 42 and there's a persistent one under my chin which grows back however often I pull it out. And then one appeared on the side of my chin recently! You need a good mirror with good lighting.

RuthW · 09/12/2025 20:49

I’d say 100% of women over 50 have them.

Matsukaze · 09/12/2025 21:06

I keep getting one that sprouts out of the side of my ear 😭 A most unwelcome neighbour to my chin hairs!

AnEnglishCircedee · 09/12/2025 21:15

I get threaded every two weeks upper lip and chin . Sadly my eyebrow hairs grow slowly.
Started waxing my face but I got in-growing hairs . I used the flawless during Covid but that gave me a shadow in my skin colour , which eventually faded once I stopped using flawless and exfoliated daily and used glycolic acid . Threading doesn’t do this .

TansySorrel · 09/12/2025 21:59

I started off with a couple under my chin in my 30s but now have quite a lot in my 50s. I pluck them daily using a light up magnifying mirror. Very satisfying

notacooldad · 09/12/2025 22:03

Meh, the joy of being menopausal and over 60... you don't care and you can't see 'em.
Speak for yourself.
I care very much and can see them!!

Menopause makes body hair even more weird. I miss my formerly strong eyebrows and lashes. Great that leg hair has all but disappeared. Not so keen on increasing amount on ‘bum fluff’ on face. Know that doesn’t help, but we are all in this hirsute problem together!

Yep my eyebrows and lashes are pathetic and as I’m fair are almost non existent - definitely need eyebrow pencil these days as not enough of them to just tint - I’m useless with fake eyelashes too -

2021x · 08/12/2025 02:14

Yup... I get a couple of "hairs of strength"... Jennifer Saunders talks about your trusted friend that will come into when you are in a coma and pluck them out when noone is looking :)

I’ve got my daughter to promise to do mine in such an event! 😂🤣😂

Squareroot · 09/12/2025 23:21

Literally the ONLY good after effect of my radiotherapy was that it stopped the little fuckers in their tracks. I think it must’ve killed the hair follicles. Oh, and it stopped my hayfever too!

Hallywally · 09/12/2025 23:28

I’ve always had a very dark moustache and chin hairs- I shave and pluck daily. It used to get me down when I was younger but I’ve just accepted it about myself now. I’m part Mediterranean so very hairy/dark hairs. On the plus side, I’m mid 40s have thick dark lashes and eyebrows.

hiddeneverythin · 09/12/2025 23:30

40 was fine. It was as soon as I hit 41 it all went downhill….. I now keep a pair of tweezers in my car as the light is best there and it gives me something to do when stuck in traffic 🤷🏻‍♀️

dcthatsme · 09/12/2025 23:38

It’s very common - I started getting them around 20. It’s best not to pluck them though as they’ll grow back coarser and darker. I made that mistake 😱 The best thing to do is electrolysis which does get rid of them.

Chickadee001 · 10/12/2025 05:57

VERY! That's why tweezers were invented!! Heavens above what's a big thing as long as they're dealt with?! Tweezing, waxing, electroloysis, dermablading...easily dealt with!

JumpLeadsForTwo · 10/12/2025 06:41

Yep, way earlier than 40, but I find it quite satisfying! My mum plucked my gran’s hair as she got older and couldn’t see as well. I pluck my mum’s now and my daughters are already lined up to do mine in the future!

This thread is hilarious 🤣 has anyone mentioned toe hair yet or am I the only hobbit?

Oh my hairy toes came in around my late 20s, I shave them when I shave my legs, which is less in the winter and sometimes I forget. Recently my 10 year old saw them and was absolutely Horrified

I wrote above about this little thing, cheap as chips. You don't have to be able to see the hairs, just run the head over the rough area that your finger to tells you there is one, and it's gone. I find plucking with tweezers very painful round my mouth, and this hurts a lot less. It's a brilliant little thing!

I have one wiry hair that started growing on my chin at 40. My friends are all the same. I quite enjoy plucking it tbh!

Grammarninja · 10/12/2025 11:29

They're like nipple hairs. No one wants to talk about it but everyone has a few.
