How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

I just don't understand how fast they grow. I check my jaw/neck area literally daily and pluck any I see, but the next day or even later that day, I can find a new one that's at least 5mm long. Even men's beards don't grow that fast.

I'm not sure how true this is but I did see a clip the other day and a woman was saying the more we pluck the more they grow back,

I'm in a vicious cycle now as I can't leave them as I'll look like a bearded lady 😅

CheeseDreamsTonight · 08/12/2025 03:03

44 here and have had them since my late twenties and mine have now started the spread. What I don’t get is how different they all are. Some have massive roots. Others are fine. Others fat with no root as such. So satisfying though.

You've heard of 5 o'clock shadow, right? That's it happening to men.

If you are prone to it, facial hair grows quickly.

ohnotthisagain2020 · 08/12/2025 03:07

I'm in my 50s and this has never happened to me, but I am overall not a very hairy person, I mean I have head hair and eyebrows, but my underarm hair was always quite sparse, and I never had to shave my legs, so I might be the exception.

Ponderingwindow · 08/12/2025 03:07

I think the better question to ask would be are there any women on this site over 40 who have yet to develop chin hairs?

Mostardently11 · 08/12/2025 03:40

I've had them since my early twenties. I'd say getting to forty without any is pretty good going!

StruggleFlourish · 08/12/2025 03:46

Really really awful, frustrating, embarrassing but to be perfectly honest I don't think anyone really much notices except yourself.
I can't remember exactly how old I was when I noticed the first chin hairs but probably around 40, also I had PCOS which doesn't help.
I have two on the bottom of my chin, and one facing the front. Thankfully they're not all growing at the same time, if I can feel even the fraction of a stubble I get very aggravated and can't wait for it to be long enough to pluck with my decent tweezers, although at that point it is so infinitesimally small that nobody else would ever notice. You'd literally have to be touching and rubbing the spot to feel the tiniest bump of a wiry hair, and I'm the only one doing that, so I know no one's noticing but, sure makes you feel shitty doesn't it.

If it's so common yet I only learned about it at age 41, then it can't be that noticeable as long as there's some maintenance. So, you're right.

But my husband knows at them. 😬

I’m -almost 50 and haven’t had one yet, again, not a very hairy person. Another sign of aging I’ll look out for!

Wallywobbles · 08/12/2025 04:06

i can’t see anyone mentioning boob hair. They’re grim. And as my eye sight gets worse they are much harder to seek and destroy.

Sodthesystem · 08/12/2025 04:08

Had them since my early 30s. Mostly in one 10p sized area of my chin though xD About 20 of them but they don't all appear at once. It'll be 5 one day and 5 a few days later etc... occasional none grow much for a week or so. Very weird.

CosmicTea · 08/12/2025 04:12

I'm 40 and never had any chin hairs even though I'm a hairy person. Maybe they will all attack at once.

KilliMonjaro · 08/12/2025 04:16

Pa ha ha!

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 08/12/2025 04:27

Yes, but not until my 50's. Initially plucking was fine (best in ggd car mirror I found), but it started causing bumps on my chin, so now I 'see a woman' and get my chin, upper lip (fuck that hurts!!)& underarms waxed about every 4/5 weeks. Sometimes if there are very noticible ones I'll pluck them inbetween, but j try not to as the growth all gets out of sync.

I've thought about electrolysis/laser, but I'm not sure what's best?!

Fluffybagel · 08/12/2025 04:38

I’m late 30s and am currently having laser to remove them. Tried electrolysis too for a few months. I do have hormone imbalances though. I am very fair skinned and light hair with thick and dark wiry chin hair!! Also have lip hair too but that’s not quite as dark 😅

Augustus40 · 08/12/2025 05:17

I grew hairs past 50. Not before. Long white hairs!

A small moustache in my mid forties which I gently shave every couple of weeks.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/12/2025 05:25

I keep a pair of tweezers at the office because if I can suddenly feel one it will drive me to distraction the rest of the day.

That's the weird thing! There can be none at all and then one ultra long one appears from nowhere!

I think mine started early 40s. I've also had random long hairs appear on my cheek and forehead. The forehead one was more bristly. The good news is that I'm mid sixties now and haven't had any appear for a few years.

Sandyoldshoes · 08/12/2025 06:36

I’ve always called them my beard hairs, but I like ‘hairs of strength’. They are weirdly fascinating. I deal with the thin but long upper lip by a bit of random tweezing daily to thin them.

Kickinthenostalgia · 08/12/2025 06:36

I’m 37, had them for years but the last 2 years they have been more prominent, I just shave them every couple of days, takes about 30 seconds.

kimonok · 08/12/2025 06:40

I've had them since my late 20's. It's normal. Not much you can do other than the same as any other body hair - pluck or laser treatments.

firstofallimadelight · 08/12/2025 06:45

I’m 47 and it started this year. I’m very fair though so thankfully not too noticeable

Lordofthewing · 08/12/2025 06:48

I have about 50 on my chin and neck…. Have done since I was about 38 - I’m 41 now and getting a few more just above my jawline. Haven’t got time or patience to pluck each one so I end up having to razor them.

Lululemonade11 · 08/12/2025 06:48

Ruthietuthie · 08/12/2025 02:27

Mine were like wires. They also caused little scabs as they broke through the surface, like little break-outs, which would take ages to fade as my skin is prone to scarring. I was constantly plucking them, waiting for the tiny points to be long enough to pluck, or seeing the little black marks underneath the surface, which would soon become a hair. Electrolysis got rid of them completely. Five years later (and after menopause) I have a new cluster, on my chin, again like wires but now white. I have an electrolysis appointment next week.
Get them zapped and the problem is solved.

This is exactly like mine! I have scarring too, I think from my pointy tweezers trying to pluck the little dots.

Did you need a lot of electrolysis treatment? I am hesitant to try it because I heard that hormonal hair is very tough to get rid of and even electrolysis doesn't work 100%

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 08/12/2025 06:49

I started having my chin and jaw hair plucked when I was 35.

Then it receded a bit, now I'm on HRT and have to attend to the beard daily.

But it's worth it for having a libido again.
