How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

I've had them since my teens! Some are quite fine but others are thick and wiry - and (as others have said) they grow so quickly. Never a day goes by without having to pluck at least one - chin, under chin, top lip, or even cheek!

On the subject of plucking, does anyone know if you can take tweezers through airport security without the risk of them being confiscated?

Jom222 · 08/12/2025 14:01

not sure how common they are but I got them early and finally in my late 50's have started electrolysis. I plucked for decades and then started having trouble w/ingrown whiskers etc and the electrolysis has nearly solved it. My chin skin is terrible from it too so while it's satisfying its bad for skin over time.

I expect I'll have to go back annually as some regrow. I have some true 'hairs of strength' lol, good luck getting rid of yours whatever method you choose, you're not alone.

I was adopted and met my maternal grandmother when I was in my early 20's and my very first thought was 'what the hell is happening on her chin' so it must be genetic for me.

I’ve had a couple of hairy moles since I was in my 20s. Now I’m 65 some of them are white! As for the ones that sprout suddenly from anywhere on my face or neck … I’m seriously thinking of giving up and joining the circus as a bearded lady!

bodyofproof · 08/12/2025 14:04

I’m a redhead and not particularly hairy so wasn’t expecting any
HA. Chin and the odd long one that sprouts out my neck

popsickle555 · 08/12/2025 14:04

Never had one! I am 43. I did read it can be related to hormones. As can hair loss! I

curious79 · 08/12/2025 14:05

I feel your pain! I am a hairy canary (PCOS related). Best thing I have done in recent years has been to find an excellent eletrolysist. She has massively got on top of the problem, so daily plucking is no longer required and I feel less like a yeti. Some women get botox and filler. I spend all my money on hair removal and am just glad if my chin isn't bristly.

PS. If they are on your can now, periodically check areas like your ear lobes where they can grow by stealth suddenly, but it is less obvious to you

You can have them removed with laser treatment, I think. As long as they are not grey - no idea why that is. Other than that, a chin wax every few weeks.

Two inches!!!! This has to be an exaggeration surely??

Nope. I’ve got a spot on my neck upper neck/ under chin that generates a super long hair every now and then. Mine are all super pale blonde, the kind of blonde you would see in children of the corn, so they aren’t visible unless you catch one in the light. I have to feel them to find them and that neck spot grows super fast.

Sunndays43226 · 08/12/2025 14:19

Asked dh to watch the kids on his lunch break today for ten mins while he wfh so I could shower
the real motive was to pluck the hair on my chin in peace that popped up over night 😂

Ooo I have one of these!!! Do you know what they are? It’s scary how fast they grow

I've basically been able to grow a beard since my teens (PCOS) - had my first electrolysis appt at 15. It's so much less painful now! The machine they used then had to target each individual hair and had a wind-up sound so you clenched up waiting for each painful zap, and it took 20-30 mins. Now the light targets whole areas at a time, the pain is more diffuse and takes about 2 mins.

Worth looking out for deals. The last one I got was 10 sessions for £130ish. Then you can have touch-up sessions every now and then.

Definitely invest in good tweezers!

The only upside is that I have excellent eyebrows and eyelashes 😆

What type of electrolysis is this please?? I’ve been having the old style you mention & it’s agony!! Once the machine stopped working and she put it back in the same spot over and over and over again!!!! 😭

Griff1963 · 08/12/2025 14:53

I know lots of women over 50 that dont have them.

ChersHandbag · 08/12/2025 15:04

Omg boob hair yes.

I also have several black ones on each shoulder like a werewolf, and one long blonde one that grows in the middle of my back.

Frankly OP you’re an amateur.

Ginburee · 08/12/2025 15:27

Those are your granny hairs and they appear very long and out of nowhere.
Also tjere are lo ely dark hairs that will appear on your top lip.

Comealongtubs · 08/12/2025 15:52

Had then since I was 30. No big deal just pluck them out, though if I miss one I struggle not to pull it out with my fingernails during the day (literally cannot leave it alone). I used to get a REALLY long one on my cheek, fortunately that follicle seems to have died after the 156th plucking. I'd take them over my wrinkly neck at 40, any day of the week.

Petpeeveoftheday · 08/12/2025 02:41

I'm almost 34 and ive had them for easily the last 5 years. It's terrible, I get a proper moustache, on my chin and down my neck. Easily over 200 hairs I can pluck out if I don't keep on top of them 😭

Same. I have to have a chin and upper lip wax every 3 weeks. Even then I'm still plucking them out in between.
I sometimes get my cheeks waxed as well.

I have the world's hairiest face, and I'm only 36.

This was with laser clinics UK - though I've just seen that the branch I went to has closed!

They don't say what exactly they use unfortunately

tobee · 08/12/2025 16:41

More common than not

canuckup · 08/12/2025 17:59

Normal

I just shave mine off

(When I remember)

I think the better question to ask would be are there any women on this site over 40 who have yet to develop chin hairs?

Me.

Sorry.

Calliopespa · 08/12/2025 18:06

"Not by the hairs on my chinny chin chin."🐷

Isn't that from the Three Little Pigs?

Sorry.

I haven't yet. But I am getting white eyebrow hairs coming through that need plucking.

They need to have melanin for the laser to target

The ones I get on my chin are dark.

Well don't wish your life away but there are lighter ones at the end on the tunnel 😅

Oh yes and those weird stick straight out ones. I find them fascinating and constantly prod them.

Likewise the hairs on my head, especially in my parting. I don't know whether I'm just having an active growing stage but I have like a halo of weird hair. Loads of them grow in the opposite direction to the rest of it and have these mad kinks. And the frizz! God the frizz 😭😭😭 My lovely defined curls are now just frizz.
