How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

OP posts:

I've had them for years and I'm nowhere near 40.

My considered theory is that, as we get older, the number of pubes appears to diminish. However, what is really happening is that they are shrinking inwards, travelling round your body, and re sprouting as chin hairs.
So fewer pubes and more chin hairs every year.

I’m 29 and have a recurrent single hair on my chin. It’s the single most thick, dark strong hair that grows on my body 🤣 notice it every so often when it’s already grown and I’m horrified!

What a lovely thought 🤣🤣
Im sure OP feels so much better now 😂

I'm 50 and don't have them, but suffered with spots for many years so I think I deserve a break!

Wax them. Get them all in one go and you only have to do it once every 3 weeks or a month or so.

I now have to wax my chin AND my top lip. The bonus is that I no longer have to wax/shave my legs.

I don't get visible ones but every now and again I find a microscopically thin one that is unfathomably long, like two inches long.

Electrolysis is your friend. Find a really good practitioner (look at their reviews carefully). Great lady in Scotland that people travel to from all over.

This has been an absolute godsend for the past 3 years.

Vaniqa 11.5% Cream For Unwanted Facial Hair

bought from The independent Pharmacy Online.

It’s not cheap and needs replacing every 6 months but wow it works. Rub cream into affected areas and wear for at least 4 hours morning and night. Fine under make-up too.

You know when the cream becomes out-of-date as the hairs begin to grow back.

Highly recommend. Oh snd since going on to HRT patches last month I barely need the cream anymore either.

FYI I’m in my late 40s.

I'm over 40 and have not yet had one but I have definitely heard of it. Someone I know likes to go to bed early with a hand-held mirror and a pair of tweezers and do what she calls "going over my chin"!😬

What I AM getting is greys in my eyebrows. It's funny because I don't notice it then suddenly one day there it is, and reasonably long! They must somehow hide under others up to a point.

Every woman I know over fifty has them

Just keep plucking 😁

Totally.
All my glamorous friends, including myself, laugh over it.
We call them mushroom hairs as they can grow an inch overnight.
Plucking them is what i do because they are just random hairs that grow on my chin and neck.
However I have seen women with full on mustaches which must be such a dose to keep on top of.
Some friends wax, but that is hard on the skin.

Two inches!!!! This has to be an exaggeration surely??

Though I do get the grey eyebrow hairs that just appear quite long - not two inches though. Maybe they curl beneath the skin then suddenly pop out fully formed. But two inches ... I'm just looking at a ruler ... that's some hair!

PudULike · 08/12/2025 13:40

My chin hairs are blonde. On the plus side, less visible. On the minus side, occasionally I find I haven't noticed one until it's approximately 2 inches long and more or less flapping in the breeze.

NoParentisOnlyLoco · 08/12/2025 13:40

I'm under 40 (not far off, but I've had this for the best part of a decade now) and practically have a beard under my chin. I epilate regularly, but the damn things return far too quickly. I would love to laser them away, but I can't justify the cost.

ETA: Yes. PCOS here as well.

Fdsew · 08/12/2025 13:41

I was very ill with Covid during the summer and wasn't near a mirror for about 3 weeks.
Several were a good inch long!

more or less flapping in the breeze.😂

This is the best thread there has been for ages!

IsItSnowing · 08/12/2025 13:47

It's very common. Plucking weakens them so that may help a bit. Or have laser or electrolysis on them.

NewYard25 · 08/12/2025 13:48

I’m 35 and I just had one or two which started during pregnancy - when I was 28, but Ive got probably 3-4 that keep coming back in the same place now!!!

Handeyethingyowl · 08/12/2025 13:52

Oh yes. I get my lip and chin waxed every month!

StruggleFlourish · 08/12/2025 13:52

I see that the discussion on this has gone wild since when I first saw the topic posted and there were only two pages...

I haven't had an opportunity to read through all the comments yet, but I was wondering, has anyone brought up that not only around this age you start noticing some chin hairs, maybe even upper lip hairs but how about nipple hairs. Anyone get those?

Like chin hairs, they're dark and wiry, not a lot of them, and they don't come out all at once, but every now and again, you're going into the shower or something, or you're doing a monthly self check, and you look down and say holy smokes, how did I miss that?!? And there's a dark hair growing out usually around the border of the areola, and yeah if you're not expecting boob hairs, that's a surprise too!!

Crikeyalmighty · 08/12/2025 13:55

I’ve got a mole on my chin and mine grows from that - very annoying

MuchTooTired · 08/12/2025 13:58

I’m 39, I call them my half beard of wisdom because it’s only on one side of my chin. I plucked them Friday, they’re back full length now. They’re the fastest growing hairs on my body!

AgentPidge · 08/12/2025 13:59

PootlePerkinandPosie · 08/12/2025 02:06

Mine have gone grey now 😳 which is a mixed blessing.

I was thinking the same thing about my moustache! It's invisible now.

I wish I were! On the plush side they're virtually invisible, I usually come across them when moisturing and I accidentally tug on them. They not like normal hair they're super super fine and blonde.
