How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

I wax mine, same with my upper lip (and my sideburns). I've always been a hairy person, the downside of being dark haired with skin that tans easily. the upside is I can sport a lovely tan in the summer.

I also wax my arms though, they're bloody hairy.

Tigercrane · 08/12/2025 11:47

I also had them for at least my 20's possibly even before. They are actually less thick now, than in my youth.I have big hairy eyebrows as well, which I have to get sorted regulary. I have dark hair and quite fair skin so always shows with the hairs.I should get them zapped before they turn grey! Reminder to myself!!

Bringmefood · 08/12/2025 11:51

Im 30 and have them 🙈🙈

LatteLady · 08/12/2025 11:55

Yes, common as f*ck... I had an arrangement with my sister that she would tell me if she spotted any... one of the many reasons that I miss her!

My pet peeve, when you can feel them but they are too short to tug!

Thursday5pmisginoclock · 08/12/2025 11:55

My Doctor told me body hair is worse for a woman if you give birth to boys due to testosterone…I’ve had 2!

mindutopia · 08/12/2025 11:58

I’m 45 and have none. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ShortAndIntense · 08/12/2025 11:58

Try having PCOS 🤣 I practically have a full beard in 3 weeks if I don’t pluck. Been that way since I was in my 20s. Having electrolysis to combat it now 💥

Every woman I know over fifty has them

Just keep plucking 😁

I am 55. I have had a single chin hair since my mid 30s. Just the one.

DejaBump · 08/12/2025 12:02

I'm in my 30's and have them, have been getting them since my early 30's...

WearyAuldWumman · 08/12/2025 12:07

When I turned 40, I recall DH saying "Oh, there's a hair on your neck. I'll get it. Oh...it's attached!"

I burst into tears.

The word "yet" in your question scares me. 😂

Just the chin, for now. 😬

Not to be annoying, when you say common, do you at least 10 % of women over 40 ?

Hey, hey - a number of us sprouted our black bristly chin hairs in early adulthood! (along with those encircling our belly buttons)

My Doctor told me body hair is worse for a woman if you give birth to boys due to testosterone…I’ve had 2!

I think that’s while you’re pregnant

Isobel201 · 08/12/2025 12:24

Yeah PCOS causes excess hair growth on my face, I just shave regularly once a week in the shower. Had it way before my 40s

ChristmasMantleStatue · 08/12/2025 12:26

PCOS here too and I shave my face daily!

watermybegonias · 08/12/2025 12:35

Incidentally I have NO other body hair at all! So why must my chin sprout?!

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 08/12/2025 12:36

I'm 53 and I've only got one hair at the moment. I've had them since I was in my twenties....just the odd one that I've kept plucking and eventually they stop growing just like eyebrow hairs. I'm not a hairy person though.

FastFood · 08/12/2025 12:36

Ponderingwindow · 08/12/2025 03:07

I think the better question to ask would be are there any women on this site over 40 who have yet to develop chin hairs?

Im 46 and don't have any, I didn't even know if was a thing.
I'm scared now.

ChristmasMantleStatue · 08/12/2025 12:39

No need to be scared. You either embrace them or deal with them. (Daily, in my case).

ChristmasMantleStatue · 08/12/2025 12:40

I confess though I have had worrying thoughts about one day ending up in a coma and no-one getting rid of them for me....

Ruthietuthie · 08/12/2025 12:42

@Lululemonade11, it probably took about 5 electrolysis sessions. I was then clear for multiple years until this new bunch of little white wires emerged. I am booked back in to see my lovely electrolysis person tomorrow.

tierdytierd · 08/12/2025 12:44

Wisdom whiskers …. Welcome,
45 here and had them sporadically for years, now it seems like every time I wax them, (ALLLL) off by the next day the 2nd wave is enroute; (I recon I could grow a busy beard in no time)
I avoid standing so that Sun highlights them and am regularly seen stroking my chin/lip, checking whether I need to take a step or 2 back when talking to people
the only good thing about this, is my Son has a realistic representation on what women actually go through and so as an adult he’ll take it with a pinch of salt (I’m telling myself that to feel less like a hairy gremlin) x

Brummiecurlz173 · 08/12/2025 12:46

if its any comfort, im 24 and have them. it can run in families, at least according to both sides of mine, as they both have it.

do you notice them/the hair growing around the time of your period if you still have one, or if not does it grow long and then when plucked not come back, then grow a little and then grow long again? does the area bleed if the hair is plucked from the root?

ForJollyLemonZebra · 08/12/2025 12:48

Had them ..moustache...Electrolosis is the way to go x

Americano75 · 08/12/2025 12:50

God I hate them, they start miles under the surface and awkward to pluck.

Studyunder · 08/12/2025 12:52

Petpeeveoftheday · 08/12/2025 02:41

I'm almost 34 and ive had them for easily the last 5 years. It's terrible, I get a proper moustache, on my chin and down my neck. Easily over 200 hairs I can pluck out if I don't keep on top of them 😭

You’re not alone. I started waxing a few years ago. I get them done every £3 weeks. It’s the only way I can keep on top of them 😩
