Do you wear leggings ?

I have worn them in the past with a longline jumper. When I say leggings, I mean the cotton type. Not something like Sweaty Betty lycra type leggings which in my mind are quite sculptured and shapely.

This thread is really not reflective of how I see leggings being worn in real life. I don't know anyone who wears cotton leggings as tights under a dress or tunic. That was a trend from about 100 years ago. Everyone I know in their 30s and 40s wears seamless exercise-type leggings with short boxy tops to show off their gym gains or more casually with a hoodie or chunky jumper. I do both, so sue me... I leave the tight crop tops with leggings/shorts look to the teens and early 20s lot though, and I won't touch a scrunch bum 😉

Yes. I wear gym type ones for the school run (it’s a 20 min walk) they are the comfiest thing to walk in, as I power walk home.

Most of the other school mums wear leggings too.

I rarely wear them outside of the school run though.

When do they get dressed?

When do they get dressed?

Presumably it's like me when I walk the dogs in the morning.....chuck on joggers and a sweatshirt then get dressed properly when I get in.

I wear them a lot, love the thermal ones for winter but wear cotton ones too. I wear them with v neck tshirt or a chunky jumpy. I'm older but a size 8 so i think they look fine. I'm not bothered about 'looking lazy' whatever that means.

pinkpony88 · 06/11/2025 22:08

Yes I wear them around the house, when wfh in winter and also at soft play, usually with a jumper or hoodie. I tend to wear a dress the rest of the time as I find jeans uncomfy.

Im 41 and I bloody love leggings. I only allow myself to buy 3 pairs at a time or I’d probably wear nothing else!! I wear mine with just a regular t shirt and short jumper. I’m a size 8 with a bum and six pack though so I’m not massively self conscious. I wouldn’t consider wearing cropped tops with them though. I do get a lot of bum comments though so it does make me slightly more aware that a lot of people probably think it’s inappropriate though the joy of ageing is giving less of a toss what people think.

Mrsnothingthanks · 27/05/2026 22:56

I wear them under tunic tops/longline tops or short skirts/dresses as I'm 45 so nobody really wants to see my exposed legs!! I always cover my bum though as again, nobody wants to see that 😆
I wear them both at home and to work (tutor, so relaxed dress code) and love the comfort. Not a fan of tights at all.

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/05/2026 07:26

I made a decision 2 years ago to stop wearing leggings, except for yoga/fitness ones. My go to was always a long tunic top/dress and leggings and I was starting to look really frumpy and it made me excuse my weight gain because they still fit! I’m more accountable now I don’t wear them!

VeganSteakAndFries · 30/05/2026 07:45

No.
Apart from at the gym as you mentioned in op.

Why does being 45 mean you should hide your legs?!

Notsosweetcaroline · 30/05/2026 07:51

I used to when I was fat, but no not since I e lost weight.

Mrsnothingthanks · 30/05/2026 11:40

@VeganSteakAndFries I'm sure some 45 yo women have great legs - as a younger women I definitely used to!
But I'm personally about a 14/16 perimeno so definitely feel short skirt days are behind me.

Zempy · 30/05/2026 11:41

I wear them under trousers or jeans in winter as I feel the cold so badly.

Aside from that, no.

Edited in case it’s relevant, I am sixty and size 8

BitOutOfPractice · 30/05/2026 11:44

Only for the gym. Nothing against them on anyone else but I think they look a bit dated with the long line top.

OhThePotential · 30/05/2026 11:49

I have a photo of myself wearing cotton leggings with a long jumper taken in October 1992, I was 21 years old.

I haven’t worn them since about 1995. I see them in the Gudrun Sjoden catalogue and similar (usually under some kind of tunic) and think they’re very old fashioned now.

hugasaurus · 30/05/2026 11:50

I wear my Nike dri-fit leggings most days. I’m super active all through the day and I have great legs and bum so why not?

They are ubiquitous around here, I’d say a good 50% of mums I see around the place are wearing sports leggings these days! I don’t think the cotton ones are as popular though, it’s mostly Sweaty Betty, Lululemon etc.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 30/05/2026 12:01

Athletic leggings for exercise or an active day around the house and running errands, sure. As longjohns or an alternative to tights under a dress, no problem.

As an actual outfit with a tunic or long top, or under a summer dress? Hell no. I can't think of anything more... as an Aussie, the word 'daggy' sums it up best.

henlake7 · 31/05/2026 17:53

Personally I dont like them with trainers and those invisible socks. I do like them with wooly socks and giant chunky boots though. They always feel like an autumn/winter thing to me.
