Weekly blow dries

Wondering how many people actually do this.

I work in a senior role in the city and really need to look good. I've started to have blow dries every couple of weeks, they last on me for 5 days and means I don't even have to think about my hair for that time.

Just wondering if anyone else does this. The costs are becoming crazy so not sure I can continue to do it despite being a high earner.

If your hair can last five days then that’s amazing – I would definitely do it if I could afford it. I have greasy hair and really need to wash it every day. My answer has been a Dyson airwrap which pays for itself if you like blow dries, took me about a month to get the hang of it but once I did my hair always looks like I’ve just stepped out of the salon and I get a ton of compliments

So curious about this! I have fine hair and loads of it. It can go wavy/unruly if let do its thing, but it’s lovely when I blow dry it. Like you I’ve greasy hair and I wash it every other day. Could you please tell me more about the Dyson!

DancingNotDrowning · 06/10/2025 08:10

Im so jealous this is an option for you.

one of my team has fab hear and gets it blow dried at the beginning of the week and it looks great until Friday. Unfortunately I need mine doing every day.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/10/2025 08:10

I think you can afford it no problem, it’s only £120 a month. I spend way more than that on beauty/hair and I earn a lot less than you.

you can also afford to get highlights if you want them Flowers

you’re struggling to spend money on yourself, you’re only alive once, go for it.

It’s half that
The op gets it done every fortnight!

@Roundup9 it doesn't need it. I wash my body throughout the week obviously. But hair just doesn't need washed as often as people think. The soap industry is worth billions because they tell you you need a different product for every body part, every new season, full moon, period, etc. Just unnecessary chemicals stripping our body of its natural oils and microbes and biome.
These images are on day 8! I took photos last month because my friend thought I would look like a rat drowning in grease 😅

Presumably You also don’t enjoy the process of washing your hair? @dontcomeatme

Even if I didn’t need to wash my hair every couple of days (in fact I don’t need to), I still would just because I love washing it and drying it 😆

Overtheatlantic · 06/10/2025 09:10

Not a high flyer but I have a wash and blow dry every week. I’m 57, my hair is fluffy and menopause has wreaked havoc on it so it’s worth the money. At this point in my life I spend more on being polished.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 06/10/2025 09:45

I’m not in your position at all, but for certain regular payments I often use the justification that I don’t buy many takesway coffees! A couple of those a day (which I know is very easily done if you commute and pop out of the office at lunchtime), adds up to much more than £28 every two weeks.
I also find the whole hairwashing process very draining, so there’s that too, if you have a full-on job. And my hairdresser charges £20 a pop for a blow dry, a long way from London.

Already explained I do not earn £700k plus!

Yes I do earn over £150k but I have a huge mortgage and 2 teens in private school so yes we are careful with whatever is left over. Hence feeling guilty about the cost of hair.

I'm not planning to work at this level until I'm 70 either so I'm just trying to be sensible.

Tbh as another London parent with a big mortgage and 2 dcs in private school I wouldn't be able to spend that much on hair, on £150k. But obviously it depends on your DH's income too, and I'm lucky that my hair and job (although senior) doesn't need it.

BeLilacSloth · 06/10/2025 10:07

Bless you OP, seems like you’ve posted just to let everyone know you’ve got a ‘big job’. I really don’t think this is about a blow dry at all, as a grown woman with a ‘big job’ should know she can spend her money on what she wants without opinions from strangers 🤣

tramtracks · 06/10/2025 10:10

An absolute no brainer. It’s tough in a senior city role and anything that makes your life easier and better - go for it.

I would also get my laundry collected and delivered back too. Weekly facials and nails.

For me, it's been lifechanging - my hair always looks polished and bouncy and it only takes about 15/20 mins to do every morning - 10 minutes longer than if I blasted it with a dryer. I got a refurbished one from Dyson for about £300 and the cost per use for me is tiny.

I use mine for curl and body - I don't know how it works for people who want a smooth look and if it's the best tool. The issue people often have is the curls don't last - there are a zillion tutorials on YouTube to help you, I watched them all and it took trial and error to get it to work but basically it's about tackling your hair when it's 80 per cent wet, using the cold shot after a warm shot, using the right products (I use Ouai curl creme and Colorwow spray but lots of others work well too ... these are just my holy grail) and - if possible - pinning up the curls until you go out. I rarely do the last as I usually have to be out the door fast in the morning but might if it's a big night out.

I think I've seen on here that you can buy one from QVC and return after a month if it isn't working out, otherwise you can try them out in places like John Lewis to get a feel. If I was OP I'd do this but I don't know what kind of look she's trying to pull off.

My hair's chin length, quite fine but there's a lot of it if that makes sense. And texture is reasonably coarse from years of highlights, which I think helps! I have the barrel for medium hair, you can get them according to your hair length.

Carriemac · 06/10/2025 10:47

Look at the John Pyle online auctions I got a brand new airwrap for £200 recently

bluebettyy · 04/10/2025 11:45

Eww would that mean you wouldn’t wash your hair in between?

My mother had a shampoo and set once a week, my MIL still does. They don’t need to wash it in between- I have no idea how it does, but it just lasts.

Jellybunny56 · 06/10/2025 11:09

I don’t do it routinely now because I just don’t have the time but when I first had my daughter I went for one every week for about 6 months ish, it was a little treat to sit and have it done for me and leave feeling fresh! Due my second baby next month and will be doing the same again, I’d do it permanently if I could find the time each week to go!

TheSixthBestOption · 05/10/2025 23:35

It sounds like its worth it for you so I would spend the money and not feel guilty.

BUT this thread is such an eye-opener for me. I think i must have a very different type of hair to most people as I've never had a good blow dry at a salon. I've been to lots of different places, including high end expensive places, and they all blow dry my fine hair so it is very flat and lifeless. If I'm going out that evening, I end up wetting it and redrying it myself to get some body into it. Im so intrigued that so many women find a professional blow dry makes such a difference.

My hair is so greasy I wash and dry it every day. It takes me 5 mins to dry it. How can it take an hour? I'm genuinely so confused as to how my hair seems to behave so differently to nearly everyone on this thread!

Im similar. The front of mine is never Right and yes to the flat. I once had a Keratin treatment and it was a different hairdresser. She said what do you want blow dry wise, I’d never been asked before, she suggested big and bouncy, my god it was fabulous.

UpToonGirl · 06/10/2025 11:32

The Dyson has had a lot of love on this thread but it's definitely not a winner for all hair types. I got mine a few years ago and have tried everything (dread to think about how much I've spent on products!) and different techniques and it just doesn't do anything for my hair. I now only use the round brush attachment for my fringe layers and GHD hairdryer for the rest.

I am now thinking about treating myself to a blow dry, I need to time mine with the weather. A good blow-dry would last me at least 5 days but not if there's drizzle or rain.

Titasaducksarse · 06/10/2025 11:33

I'm not in a senior role but have tried to smarten my act up since starting a middle management job. I do my own hair, blow drying straight on day one. This takes the longest.
Day 2 I add a wave to it with my straighteners, this seems to refresh it
Day 3 - dry shampoo and wear it up!

This routine seems to work for me

UpToonGirl · 06/10/2025 12:04

Just looked at my salon (NE suburb) and it's £42 for a standard blow dry and £60 for a 'luxury' blow dry.

Are there any hairdressers in your area that do home visits? You would probably mentally feel better about it if you could find someone who charges £20 even though it's only £8 cheaper.

NowYouSee · 06/10/2025 12:22

Hello OP. I have similar life circumstances and if you can accommodate in budget I think sounds completely fine. You’re spending what £56 a month on grooming, what is the big deal if you can afford it? Plenty of other senior women would spend the equivalent budget on hair colouring or nails and think nothing of it.

I don’t do it but I can’t get my hair past 48 hours max without needing a wash so wouldn’t work for me.

B0YM0M · 06/10/2025 12:35

Have you tried one of these curling things you sleep in? https://amzn.eu/d/6ZeebZt Not sure on your hair type, mine is very straight and this works better than a blow dry for me

Toobloomeasy · 06/10/2025 14:26

£150k and you have TWO at private schools AND a HUGE mortgage in London???

bloody hell, I impressed you can afford all that on £150k.. that is what the thread should be about!

Newmeagain · 06/10/2025 15:48

I work in a professional role in London where most people earn that or more and I really don’t think anyone does this unless it’s a special occasion - it’s not just the cost, but finding the time! Also, many people have to wash their hair more frequently,

the only person I know who does this is my ex-MIL who has always been a wealthy lady of leisure, and therefore always had time for regular trips to get her hair and nails done, shopping, etc.

Didn't really want this thread to become about that but yes I have a DH who earns, plus some private income, wouldn't be possibly otherwise.

The point of this thread wasn't really about affordability, it was to ask about others' experiences and habits.

So for half the month you have great hair
and the other half you… don’t?
