Weekly blow dries

Wondering how many people actually do this.

I work in a senior role in the city and really need to look good. I've started to have blow dries every couple of weeks, they last on me for 5 days and means I don't even have to think about my hair for that time.

Just wondering if anyone else does this. The costs are becoming crazy so not sure I can continue to do it despite being a high earner.

I've never understood the weekly blow dry / shampoo and set thing - don't people get sufficiently mussed up at least every other day as to make the whole thing pointless? I work out or go for a long walk every day, my hair's a state afterwards. Even cooking dinner messes it up a bit. Are some women actually floating around never breaking a sweat?

clipboardz · 04/10/2025 13:07

i'm sure my granny and her friends used to get their hair set weekly

Motheranddaughter · 04/10/2025 13:10

I get mine done on a Friday and wash it myself Sunday and Wednesday

My hair is do thick and dry that if I spent 3 hours in the gym then cooked a curry it would just look the same. Its really annoying as it takes over an hour to dry myself. Most of the time I just tie it up as I am workimg from home so I dont need a weekly blow dry.
But yeah my body sweats but my hair is like some sort of waterproof thatched roof on my head 😂i can leave my hair for weeks and it doesnt look greasy if anything it gets drier.

Eww would that mean you wouldn’t wash your hair in between?

The fewer washes the better. I wash my hair once per week and oil it in between.

I don't go to hair salons. My parents would cut my hair. I cut my kids' hair. I dye and style my own hair.

I have a waver which adds body and spruces up unwashed hair. I have a hot barrel brush that silkens the hair and adds curls at the end.

Salons are overpriced. I'd rather put that money into my savings.

Everyone has different commitments and spending priorities.

i am in a senior role - earning close to this poster. I am single, big mortgage and wouldn’t spend a couple of hundred a month on a cut a colour (that’s what it costs in me area).

They do but hair clearly is mattering to the OP. I get mine coloured every other month but wouldn’t get it blow dried. I can do that myself and it lasts a lot less time.

I see what you mean but I'm careful with it, I tie it up tightly if I'm walking outside, or in the gym, always have a hood on my coat or umbrella, put it in a shower cap if I'm cooking, if I'm on the tube I wear my hood sometimes ... I really try to make it last 😂 I try to time big workouts when it needs a wash and I'm not really a sweaty person anyway!

......would be my dream! And are top of the list for when I win the lottery. My lovely hairdresser is on standby!

It's definitely a guilt thing isn't it. I used to be rubbish at spending money on myself, but have learnt over the last few years (since separating actually) that 'I'm worth it'.

No one else in the family is missing out, from what you've said re nails, hair colour etc you're not being frivolous, so in the same spirit of 'wear the shorts ' , get the damn blow dries!

Enjoy.

I'm envious of this. I mostly sweat on my face and head (and I sweat a lot when working out) and I have fine hair that tends to greasiness. I have my hair blow dried only when I get it cut, and it lasts a few hours at best.

Mydadsbirthday · 04/10/2025 12:08

Oh wow I've never used these. Do you used them on dry hair I assume so blow dry your hair first?

Always on dry hair. I either let hair dry naturally before bed the night before, then pop in a knob of mousse in the morning, or rough dry it and mousse.

EggCustardTart · 04/10/2025 13:14

My mum had a weekly wash and blow dry for years. She had neither a big job nor a high income but it was her one treat.

VioletandMauve · 04/10/2025 13:14

In the salon I go to there are many women who go once a week for a blow dry, some even go twice a week. I go every 3 weeks for my roots, but apart from that I do it myself as I have a Brazilian blow dry every 5 months and use straighteners and my hair looks good.

If you can afford it, regardless of your high earning job, or even if you were a SAHM, then do it. Don’t penny pinch on something that’s important to you.

You wear a shower cap to cook? Grin

I’d learn to blow dry it. It seems a lot less faff

hohummm1 · 04/10/2025 13:15

When I was working in NY and had three small DCs I used to get it done near the office a couple times a week, but generally before I had something where my role was going to be very visible. I exercise at least 4 days a week and get sweaty so need to wash it pretty often, so blow drys have never lasted that long for me. I switched to Brazilian blow drys about 5 years ago and love them - the key is finding someone really good and telling them not to make it too flat/straight. I can give myself a not-quite-professional, but pretty good blow dry in about 10 minutes (thick shoulder length hair).

But to be honest, I also get my nails and brows done, my hair professionally coloured and the occasional facial and massage without a whiff of guilt. Everyone's version of self-care is different and if something that makes your life easier qualifies for you and you can afford it, why deprive yourself?

soundsofthevalley · 04/10/2025 13:16

Depending on where you are, there are blow dry bars around the place, which work out cheaper than going to salons.

I would love to wash my hair daily just jump in the shower and wash it, but its like trying to wash and style a dulux dog. It's just too much. I have to have a three hour window to wash and dry my hair its so annoying!!

But doesn't tying it up tightly or putting a hood or cap on also mess up the blow dry? My hair is so different to this I can't comprehend it! I'm wearing a head band now because I'm about to do a yoga workout, and my hair will be so flat and sweaty afterwards that the only cure will be washing it.

Ok, that makes it sound like more stress than it's worth!

Furknickersandglitz · 04/10/2025 13:21

I would absolutely love to have a blow dry once a week. I only get it for special occasions or when I have my hair cut. It's around £30-£40, depending on the seniority of the stylist. But, I go to the gym every day and my hair gets sweaty so a blow dry would not last. I did think about paying to train to blow dry it myself but I've never looked in to it. Same with gels too

There is no doubt that a blow dry feel makes you ooze confidence

turkeyboots · 04/10/2025 13:21

Go find an old lady salon near work or a less cool area and negotiate. My local is €130 for 8 a month, so works out very cost effective.

I wish they had these at UK airports.

Mydadsbirthday · 04/10/2025 13:33

@TheLeadbetterLife no it is fine, I put it in a clip and it looks fine with I take it out. I use a bit of dry shampoo sometimes.

@LittleBearPad yes I know it sounds ridiculous 😂 but it really works

To be fair I hardly do any cooking my DH does 80% of it!

My hairdresser has her regulars who come in for their weekly blow dry and their timeslot is guarded fiercely. I'd love it, but it wouldn't work for me (I'm time poor, have gotten better over the years at styling my hair and my hair only last for a day or 2 without greasy roots).

I wouldn't feel one bit guilty OP, professional hair is so important in a professional role and I know when I have something important at work my hair is what I prioritise. I have gotten better over the years at reframing how I spend money. When my children were younger and I worked full time I agonised over looking for a cleaner, then started thinking about it as buying myself time. Light bulb moment.

Nails done = buying a polished persona
Lash lift = buying years back as I looked less droopy
Massage = buying stress free time
Robot mop = buying time

applesandpumpkins · 04/10/2025 13:46

Just cut back on something else if you feel guilty. Or ask for some salon vouchers for Christmas.
