Anyone want to talk Autumn shopping wish lists?

I know it’s not even August yet, and I’ve still not gone on my summer holiday yet - but there’s a chill in the air, I’ve packed a box of freshly picked blackberries in the freezer for autumnal crumbles and while looking for school uniform today, noticed quite a few burgundy items in shop windows.

So what’s on your autumnal shopping list?

Im after a pair of black knee high boots. (My old ones finally had to be retired last year, beyond what could be repaired.)

I’ve just bought a dark brown cashmere jumper on vinted. Am now going to start the hunt for the perfect dark green cashmere jumper or cardie.

I think I need new work trousers but not sure what shape we’re doing this year. (Wide leg ? That doesn’t work well with puddles.)

Anyone else with a list for when the new season starts arriving in the shops?

I have spent way too much time reading this thread. I'd really like a pair of brown ankle boots this autumn. All my boots are quite chunky, and I'd like a "lighter" pair to wear in the early autumn (now, essentially) with dresses etc. I've seen a pair at Celtic and Co, but I've never bought their shoes - I have a dress and their sheepskin slippers (which I couldn't live without), but no shoes. Anyone know how they fit/what the quality is like? I like these as I think they're almost between a shoe and a boot

I'm also on the lookout to replace some corduroy trousers - either black or chocolate brown. I wore through my COS ones. I loved them but they are no longer in stock

Ooh they're lovely!

I’d go burgundy if you think it’s something you want to get a few years out of, it’s more flexible. Can wear with navy and black and denim. I have a sort of burgundy coat that I’ve had for a few years, can wear it smart or casual with jeans and trainers and goes with most things in my winter wardrobe.

Zara are doing a nice burgundy coat for £49.99 atm - tried it on in store and it was a lovely fit. Quite smartish too so good for the office and a reasonable price.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/09/2025 18:56

There’s a lot of very nice burgundy wool coats on vinted if you aren’t sure you will wear the colour long term.

I do have a lot of burgundy in my wardrobe already as it’s one of those colours that have always flattered me. I was after a few brown things to go with it instead of the grey and black I put it with last couple of autumns, but after getting one brown jumper, I’ve struggled to find anything I like in chocolate brown.

Im on the lookout for a new handbag as well, really struggling to find anything thats right! They are all either big lap top size or only just fit your phone and keys size.

PeonyPatch · 01/10/2025 12:06

I just had an advert come up on Instagram for Sezane. Quite a few nice pieces 🤩

Yes, I’ve found handbags tricky this year. Nothing standing out to me at the moment… 🧐

PeonyPatch · 01/10/2025 12:07

Demellier handbags come up a lot for me on socials but they’re a bit expensive.

I would really like a burgundy cross body bag. Marks and Spencer have this one. It’s lovely but the strap is too short, particularly if you add a coat underneath. I don’t like Kipling or Radley. If you’ve seen anything let me know.

Any good?

@MissyB1 i found a lot of choice for handbags in TK Maxx back in the early spring. Lots that would fit my iPad, a book, and handbag kit, but not as big as laptop size. Also on Vinted you might get something from a previous season.

@toooldforbrat nice dress, but I would put chunkier shoes or boots with it because it’s a lot of volume and fabric and I think needs balancing. It’s a lovely colour and a striking piece, though.

NormaMajors1992coat · 01/10/2025 15:21

Ooh I do like that FatFace burgundy bag, there’s a bit a 70s vibe to it, reminds me of my mum’s bags when I was little 🙂

TragicMuse · 01/10/2025 17:14

I really like the suede Fat Face ones too!

The quality of the leather for their bags is usually really good. I got one for my birthday this year and it’s lovely.

Am I a lonely voice here - I really like clothes and want to dress well but I can’t chase down this season’s colour just because it’s this season’s colour. What do you do if it’s just not your colour?
On a separate note, I want to buy red, but not a blue red, but a rich pink red - anyone?

I'm looking at spending £300 on a Sunspell raglan sleeve, roll neck, lambswool jumper. I buy one expensive jumper every year in the hope that one day, I'll have enough to be going on with but they always seem to disappoint.

I bought a green funnel neck wool jumper from House of Bruar last year and the thing itched like hell.

At that price point look at the likes of & daughter and Navy grey, which are fantastic quality and won't disappoint

Yes, I'm a very pale blonde and dont suit chocolate next to my face. I do wear it in accessories, shoes and bottoms though, with an off-white/ivory to lift it.

In terms of warm reds, they're quite rare unless you go for the fall-back of bright red (which i do). The default seems to be a blue red. Try searching 'coral red' or 'geranium red' - that should return some suitable results.

Game0fCrones · 02/10/2025 10:21

'Poppy' is another good colour to search for.

PeonyPatch · 02/10/2025 10:32

If anyone is still looking for a pair of burgundy trousers, there is the Claude (high rise flare) or Gabi (wide leg) by Reiss which I’m debating between!

if I don’t like the seasonal colours (see buttermilk yellow earlier this year), and I’m shopping, I tend to stick with the neutrals or ‘normal’ seasonal colours that suit me. I’ve actually got a lot of burgundy already as it’s an autumn staple for me.

I’ve seen a bit of red around, I bought a short sleeved red knit from H&M or Zara last month, though it was more a bright coral red I think. JL might be a good place to look as you can filter by colour and see what brands have red items, then check their own websites for fuller ranges?

I’m slightly different - this seasons colours - browns and burgundy - suit me really well. Burgundy particularly is something I’ve bought a lot of over the years. But I really don’t like one of “my” colours being in fashion to this extent, because I keep feeling that it’ll be unfashionable next year, whereas for years it’s just been a colour I put with something more fashionable.

Or perhaps I should stock up this year while there’s lots about and not care I’m going to spend the next 5 years looking dated!

That’s also how I feel and I feel I should be making the most of these colours!!

I feel like burgundy is around all the time in autumn / winter (though to a lesser extent this year), but that brown will go out of fashion again at some point, so I don’t mind spending more on burgundy items if I love them, and going a bit more budget for brown. That said, I’m seriously contemplating treating myself to a good quality brown long coat if I find one I like, after missing out on one last winter.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/10/2025 08:17

On another note, does anyone have any suggestions / links to items that would go with a dark red/wine velvet a-line button through mini skirt? I bought it a few years ago, but have always struggled to style it well. Interested in dressing it down for casual, but I’d also really like to find a top or two to wear it with on winter/christmassy nights out.
