I hoped this day would never come…I think the midi dress is actually over

I know it’s been known for quite a some time that the midi / midaxi dress has past it’s style peak. But until now I’ve still felt very comfortable with my wardrobe full of long dresses (so easy to wear!).

But yesterday, wearing a long shirt dress which felt totally chic a couple of years ago, it felt a bit dated, a bit bland, a bit boring. I felt everyone who looked cool was wearing something different and the (many) midi dresses being worn all looked a bit sad.

I am devastated. I’ve been a fully signed up member of Team Midi Dress and I’m not ready to give them up!

Oh FFS do all the “just wear what you want” “why are you a slave to fashion?” posters understand that this is the STYLE AND BEAUTY topic?? It exists so people can discuss fashion. So it’s really pointless and stupid to come on a thread in this topic and act superior because you don’t care about fashion. Some people care, some people don’t care. Fine either way. But it’s not ok to post on a thread in a topic specifically for discussing fashion and criticise someone for caring about/wanting to discuss fashion.

style and fashion are often wildly divergent though

Disturbia81 · 20/06/2025 08:55

I’m of the wear what suits you tribe, like I can’t believe women go around wearing something they don’t feel comfortable in for fashion!?
But I’m still seeing them everywhere
Tbh I see everything worn a lot, maxi dresses, shorts, loose trousers etc

I was thinking the same. I’m tired of reading all the predictable responses from people who think they’re superior because they’re not interested in fashion.

Paganpentacle · 20/06/2025 08:55

Why do you even give a shit what other people are or are not wearing??
Wear what you like and what you're comfortable in.

If everyone who loves wearing midis keeps on wearing them because they love them, rather than allowing themselves to be dictated to by the fashion industry, they will continue to be current won’t look dated. Wear what you love and look best in.

You only need to look at some of the trends of the last 50 years to realise that "fashion" is not synonymous with style or with beauty.

Some of the most beautiful and stylish people I know never follow fashions

RedSheepsss · 20/06/2025 09:01

OP if you like something and it suits you, just wear it? I don’t understand why you feel like you can’t wear something just because a few other people aren’t?

Truly ‘cool’ people don’t give a shit about what others are wearing. It’s so bizarre to care about what’s trendy, just wear what you feel good in.

TheDowagerLadyUrsula · 20/06/2025 09:01

I do enjoy when the the ‘wear what you want’ crew stumble into Style and Beauty to pretend that they’ve never heard of the concept of fashion. I guarantee they aren’t wearing shoulder pads and ra-ra skirts.

I work in London incidentally and this week I saw lots of midi dresses although probably on older women ( not that it matters). I don’t really have any that fit so for me it’s light wide leg trousers and a resort shirt in cotton or seersucker.

I wear a midi dress in London. I’m ‘younger’, around 30.

Firstly, never dressed my age and never intend to, I know what looks good on my figure and colouring, and what makes me happy.

Secondly, lots of people come over and go ‘just wanted to say this dress looks fantastic on you’.

It’s a conservative Hobbs midi with a belt, nothing on show, and I have an average figure.

Why people want to follow trends is beyond me. Personal style and feeling good and comfortable in what you have on make you stand out more than wearing that play suit you see 20 others wearing that same day.

If you love your midi, wear your midi. The end.

True. But we wouldn't have worn them when they were "in fashion" either

(Not least because I wasn't even born when they were a fashion!)

It’s not that, I like fashion but I don’t understand why you would chuck away something that you love based upon what’s on trend? I wear baggy jeans but I also still wear my skinny’s because they make up great outfits and they look good on me. I wouldn’t stop wearing something because Vogue says it’s not cool any more. You can love fashion and still wear what you want to wear without succumbing to trends.

Bring back the (just above) knee length dress and the longer shorts/shorts culottes! I've never liked midi length and will be delighted to have more choice.

Whilst we're at it - no more summer dresses with long sleeves. If it's hot enough for me to wear a dress I don't want my arms swathed in fabric.

Couldn’t disagree more! Don’t think even supermodels look good in just above knee length and most women would much prefer some kind of sleeve. I don’t think those items would sell very well.

ElBandito · 20/06/2025 09:03

Thingamebobwotsit · 20/06/2025 06:48

I think the dress length is fine, and lots of people are still wearing long dresses/skirts, but the I am seriously hoping the flouncy style is going to wane soon. I look awful in them and suit a much more tailored look. The extra fabric just swamps me.

The tailored look will never come back in because it requires more time, effort and thought from manufacturers.

A large flouncy dress with an elasticated 'waist' immediately under the bust will fit more people more easily than a dress with a proper waist at the waist and (we can only dream) darts so that the dress fits on the top half.

I look fucking ridiculous in flouncy dresses with puffy wuffy sleeves and I'm fed up with it.

You never know. I wore both as Tammy Girl was very much what all the well dressed girls were wearing.

WhyWouldAnyone · 20/06/2025 09:04

They're great for the office, which, I appreciate, is hardly the height of fashion.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 20/06/2025 09:04

I'm wearing mid calf wide culottes (from Sainsbury's, saw an ad on MN!) with a fitted tee and I feel pretty cool!

OMGitsnotgood · 20/06/2025 09:04

LeaveALittleNote · 20/06/2025 08:56

It’s a style and beauty board and we are discussing fashion.

’Style’ doesn’t mean you have to follow what the fashion industry tries to tell you to wear. ‘Fashion’ is just an industry trying to make people buy a whole new wardrobe when fashion changes, it’s a commercial con. Nothing to do with style.

TheDowagerLadyUrsula · 20/06/2025 09:09

Anyway, the cerulean sweater crew aside, I think OP is correct that the trend (because that is what it was) has had its day and the dresses will start to fade from the shops. It doesn’t mean that anyone will be mandated to stop wearing them 🙄.

There’s been good-natured mockery of the ‘Kent mums’ in floral midis, denim jackets and white trainers on social media since at least last summer.

I agree with the PP that knee length looks great on some people, especially the ones with nice legs.

Its like when posters say that skinny jeans have always looked awful on everyone. It"s not true. With the right boots/shoes they can look lovely. I do like baggier jeans too though.

ladygindiva · 20/06/2025 09:15

Alltheyellowbirds · 19/06/2025 22:37

You’ll have to tear my midi dresses out of my cold dead hands.

I don’t have the legs for minis. Love a maxi but I’m short so they always trail in the ground. Midi is the only length that works.

ETA didn’t mean to quote OP!

it's fine to move your style occasionally if you're not feeling something any more.. i've completely done a 180 from 50s rockabilly bright prints to all out goth in the last 2 years, but declaring something is 'out' just because you're not feeling it in this day and age is madness.

Wear what you like, and don't wear what you don't like.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 20/06/2025 09:19

No one cares what you are wearing.

OMGitsnotgood · 20/06/2025 09:20

Whilst the dresses might fade from the shops, the good news for midi fans is that Vinted will be full of bargains offloaded by those who allow their wardrobes to be determined by the fashion pages. Win-win.

Meetmeundertheclock · 20/06/2025 09:20

The fashionable colours have changed. Sometimes it is difficult to grasp as they are subtle. (for info; I don't do subtle) eg I am WFH wearing a fairly old button through midi dress floral design. It will show up OK on Zoom, fine. I would not wear it into office, the flowers are too big, the colours too bright. It is JoeBrown. Newer ones are softer shades and smaller flower designs and more space in the design. it lifts and lightens the effect.
Sorry for the PhD used to be in the business.
