I hoped this day would never come…I think the midi dress is actually over

I know it’s been known for quite a some time that the midi / midaxi dress has past it’s style peak. But until now I’ve still felt very comfortable with my wardrobe full of long dresses (so easy to wear!).

But yesterday, wearing a long shirt dress which felt totally chic a couple of years ago, it felt a bit dated, a bit bland, a bit boring. I felt everyone who looked cool was wearing something different and the (many) midi dresses being worn all looked a bit sad.

I am devastated. I’ve been a fully signed up member of Team Midi Dress and I’m not ready to give them up!

I've only just got into the midi dresses! Always loved a mini dress but I've put on weight recently and midi dresses are the only thing I feel comfortable in. And they are so loose and cool in the hot weather, and suitable for work. I hope they aren't going out of style!

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 20/06/2025 08:14

In hot weather i wear whatever feels most comfortable, and a wafty cotton dress beats trousers any day.

vincettenoir · 20/06/2025 08:14

Nah. I’m looking smoking and on trend in a midi dress today.

cheesycheesy · 20/06/2025 08:14

I love a patterned midi or maxi dress and often get complimented on them. I’m not changing. They suit me much more than the beige baggy stuff that’s fashion now.

FatherFrosty · 20/06/2025 08:17

I’m short. Cropped wide legs look awful on me.

They are quite the Robinson cruseo look

Midis show no sign of giving up the ghost just yet, OP. I was in London for a gig recently (wearing black linen kick flares and a waistcoat, flat sandles) and I was surrounded by summer midis.

Maybe they’ll be over in another couple of years? I recall skinny jeans took quite a while to go, too.

And now skinny jeans coming back, as they always do, so 🤷‍♀️

I know fashion is a thing, of course I do, but there is no chance for the planet (or our bank accounts!) if someone decides we need to lop off or add a few inches and we all follow slavishly...

It's especially sad if it's something that really suits you.

I'm as guilty as anyone but it has to stop.

Sorry, as you were.

Screamingabdabz · 20/06/2025 08:17

Any kind of trousers in a heatwave? All that fabric around the crotch and a waistband rubbing away? No thanks. The one privilege dress-wearers have is wafty-ness.

I think it’s just that the high street has been selling the same old floral milkmaid crap for the last few years and anything that is an alternative looks fresh and new. I mean I’m fat and old but even my heart sank when I saw all the puff sleeves, old fashioned floral and tiered dresses this season - I thought ‘What? Again? Have they just got last year’s stuff out of the warehouse?’

You won’t see the last of midis though. They’re just so versatile and flattering. Great for double use too - in the summer and then in the winter with boots and knits. They just need to catch on to a cleaner, more urban style for them.

LittleAlexHornesPocket · 20/06/2025 08:18

As a short person, I'm looking forward to having a bit more choice in the shops. Midis look ridiculous on me and maxis drag on the floor.

Cucy · 20/06/2025 08:19

I don’t understand threads like this.

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in and what looks good on you.

We all have items of clothing that looks good on us but not other people and vice versa.

Perhaps we’re in different parts of the country but where I live no one wears the same thing.
Yesterday I saw trousers, shorts, mini skirts, maxi dresses, short dresses and midi dresses.

Alltheyellowbirds · 20/06/2025 08:20

Fantailsflitting · 20/06/2025 07:45

The demise of the maxi and the shirt dress can't come soon enough for me. Nothing chic about trailing round in a long shapeless sack type garment. Why is it easier to wear than a shorter dress with some shape?

Because lots of us don’t look good in short skirts? Great for you if you do.

I think this is exactly it.

KPPlumbing · 20/06/2025 08:23

You're welcome to cut my midi dresses off of my cold, rigid corpse. That's the only way I'll be parted with them.

Agree. It's grim to think that despite all we know about the harms of rampant consumerism, some people will throw out perfectly good stuff they like just to slavishly follow the latest fashion

WhereNextToday · 20/06/2025 08:25

Nah, love a midi dress, especially tiered and full.

Hides a multitude of things I want to hide and so freeing.

Might drop the ditzy floral though.

TaggieO · 20/06/2025 08:26

I’d like to see more things that are just above knee length rather than mini mini. I’d happily wear shorter stuff but I don’t want to flash my arse at work.

Vaxtable · 20/06/2025 08:26

What does it matter? I wear what I am comfortable in and don’t care if it’s ‘in’ or not

SwimSwamSwimSwam · 20/06/2025 08:28

ThePoshUns · 20/06/2025 07:09

Yes knee length is perfect and no to long sleeve summer dresses.

Knee length definitely suits me. I'm 5ft 3 and top heavy so midi length looks ridiculous on me.

RaspberryPavlovaPlease · 20/06/2025 08:30

I don't know why you think this @Bringinguptherear

Every single clothes company has midi dresses at the moment. From more up market like Me&Em, to Marks and Sparks.

Have you seen what the ladies are wearing at Ascot this week?
Every single well dressed woman is in a long dress. Most midi, some maxi.

Midi can be just above the ankle, not just below the knee (which looks very dated IMO.)

RaspberryPavlovaPlease · 20/06/2025 08:33

Bringinguptherear · 20/06/2025 07:31

Yes this is it! Suddenly i’m just not feeling it.

I think block colours and separates and different shapes (wide leg trousers) are feeling right.

I’m definitely not one to slavishly follow style but what other people are wearing filters through and impacts how you are feeling about yourself.

Literally midi dresses are 90% of my wardrobe so this feels quite catastrophic!

You're being rather overly dramatic OP.
Wear what you like. No one really cares.

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 20/06/2025 08:33

Pretty much every woman in my office is wearing a midi dress today. I’m not sure we’re all blocking the aisles at Gail’s and standing on the wrong side of the escalator or whatever that pp said!

I admit the floral midis are starting to look slightly dated. Quite a few people in plainer ones which look better and one woman in a fabulous animal print

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/06/2025 08:35

I am reasonably tall (five foot six) but with incredibly short legs. Maxi dresses make me look as though I came dressed as a Dalek, and my varicose veins mean that short dresses are out. Short legs also mean that I can't wear wide legged trousers, because I flap like a schooner in full sail when I walk.

That's it, I can never leave the house again if midi dresses are Not To Be Seen!

Absolutenonsense · 20/06/2025 08:47

Floisme · 20/06/2025 07:32

I don’t wear dresses so I’ve no skin whatsoever in this game but it always fascinates me when something you like starts to look just a little bit ‘off’ and how, if you say anything, some people get really defensive or sanctimonious. Don’t worry op, a prophet is never appreciated in their own country.

😆

Doubleraspberry · 20/06/2025 08:48

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 20/06/2025 07:54

Me too. I have shorter dresses and I have maxi dresses but midi feels like my mum in Laura Ashley.

I so nearly wrote Laura Ashley in my original post!

Agree totally also on the general awfulness of the ditsy print milkmaid stuff. I long for clean lines and colours. I’m glad buying secondhand is so good for the planet as it’s the only way I can find decent clothes at a reasonable price.

I was at ascot yesterday and stood on the balcony above the royal enclosure with a very stylish friend and we really struggled to point out the people who were well dressed. Masses of long flouncy floral maxi dresses with puff or balloon sleeves that just looked terrible (tiered skirts AND balloon sleeves AND busy floral - just no), lots of midi or maxi all over lace gowns with long sleeves (all the lace gowns looked awful, really awful, see Carol Middleton at ascot a few days ago for an egregious example), and lots of midi dresses that just suddenly felt a bit per Una. The people who we said “now she is stylish” were often wearing elegant palazzo trousers either as a jumpsuit maybe with a halter neck or with a waistcoat, or they were wearing proper simple well fitting structured day dresses in a single colour or non-floral pattern (some nice small paisleys etc), or were wearing dresses ending at or just below the knee.

But it all looked a bit of a mess really.

Please may we have a picture of what you and your friend were wearing? Then we will all know how to dress appropriately

MissedItByThisMuch · 20/06/2025 08:53

Oh FFS do all the “just wear what you want” “why are you a slave to fashion?” posters understand that this is the STYLE AND BEAUTY topic?? It exists so people can discuss fashion. So it’s really pointless and stupid to come on a thread in this topic and act superior because you don’t care about fashion. Some people care, some people don’t care. Fine either way. But it’s not ok to post on a thread in a topic specifically for discussing fashion and criticise someone for caring about/wanting to discuss fashion.
