I hoped this day would never come…I think the midi dress is actually over

I know it’s been known for quite a some time that the midi / midaxi dress has past it’s style peak. But until now I’ve still felt very comfortable with my wardrobe full of long dresses (so easy to wear!).

But yesterday, wearing a long shirt dress which felt totally chic a couple of years ago, it felt a bit dated, a bit bland, a bit boring. I felt everyone who looked cool was wearing something different and the (many) midi dresses being worn all looked a bit sad.

I am devastated. I’ve been a fully signed up member of Team Midi Dress and I’m not ready to give them up!

I don't possess a dress and haven't worn one for 30 years. Nor a skirt.

Onelifeonly · 20/06/2025 07:12

Well it doesn't seem that way to me. Practically every woman I have seen this week, at work or in the streets when driving to work, (lots) has been wearing a midi dress. I live in London, not the back of beyond.

Divebar2021 · 20/06/2025 07:16

People aren’t throwing aside midi dresses that they love and saying “I can’t wear this anymore because it’s no longer cool” they’re putting it on and feeling a bit off or a bit meh in it. Maybe it’s that other people have moved on or they’re just a little jaded of the particular shape ( puff sleeves for example) and they want something sharper or it’s just time for a refresh. I think there may be ways to wear them going into cooler weather with jumpers over the top otherwise stick them away in storage if you can. Obviously if people still feel like the bees knees in them then carry on.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/06/2025 07:16

I wore midi length when all around me were doing the on or above the knee thing. For the times when I don't want to wear a maxi, I'll continue to do it.

I'm just not comfortable with anything more exposing - and if that means I need to shop from places that cater to religious or cultural dress preferences, that's fine by me.

Doubleraspberry · 20/06/2025 07:16

spoonbillstretford · 20/06/2025 07:00

And I don't think the midi dress has ever been a thing for younger adults. My DDs don't own one between them. It even took me ages in my late 30s/40s to get my head round midi length at all being fashionable as when I was younger I wouldn't have been seen dead in that length either. Had to be short or full length and nothing in between!

Edited

I still can’t wear them. Partly because they stop at the least flattering place for me and partly because I just feel like my mum. To me they still feel frumpy.

SirRaymondClench · 20/06/2025 07:16

Wear whatever dress you want OP. Fashion is transient and designed to keep selling us stuff and telling us we are 'wrong' if we don't comply.

Style is timeless. I'm 53 now and realised a few years back that this is my life and I will wear whatever I like and anyone who can't cope with that can get to fuck.
If you like your midi dresses wear them.

Divebar2021 · 20/06/2025 07:19

I work in London incidentally and this week I saw lots of midi dresses although probably on older women ( not that it matters). I don’t really have any that fit so for me it’s light wide leg trousers and a resort shirt in cotton or seersucker.

dudsville · 20/06/2025 07:20

I can see a changing trend too, but if i wore a wide leg trouser and cami I would look look like I haven't tried at all. That's what I thought of most of 90s fashion. Midi dresses have suited me since childhood. I love the freedom and the elegance of them.

Noiamnotalison · 20/06/2025 07:23

The best dressed people in summer are always those who look comfortable and cool (temperature wise) and are just enjoying themselves. I wore a floral, flouncy mid-axi out last night which I was second guessing before I left but it was particularly flattering and I felt great in it. Got a tonne of compliments. I could have put something a lot more trendy on but the wide legged linen or palazzo look doesn’t suit me and I’d have been self conscious and enjoyed myself less.

Thinking about it there were people wearing practically all styles. I feel like there’s much more flexibility to wear whatever suits in the summer.

Steelworks · 20/06/2025 07:23

This!

Love a maxi dress.

SillyMillie90 · 20/06/2025 07:24

Nah I’m not having it. I’m not falling for it anymore 😄 Just to throw them all out and then have to buy them back next year.

Lots of the younger women (20s) where I work were wearing midis yesterday, mainly with trainers or those fisherman sandals. Prairie type midis, tea dress type midis, vest top type midis, strappy midis…. All looked cool no one looked tired.

ungratefulcat · 20/06/2025 07:25

It's totally liberating when you stop caring what's in fashion.

Do you know @Noiamnotalison theres nothing nicer imo than being out on a hot summers Eve in a floaty dress as it’s blowing and floating around you. 🥰

AwakeNotThruChoice · 20/06/2025 07:29

I wear midis a lot. As for work I don’t like to have too short a skirt on, I wear them with either trainers or chunky DM sandals.

Why on earth are you following trends like a slave to fashion?!
So sad.
Wear what you want!

Exactly.

I think I know what you mean OP. I’ve gone out a couple of times this week wearing summery midi dresses and (I can’t explain why) felt ALL WRONG. I’ve also gone out wearing linen trousers/vest top and felt ALL RIGHT. So is it a trouser thing?! I actually haven’t noticed what passers-by are wearing (too busy feeling either wrong in my dress or fabulous in my trousers 🤣) but I did meet a friend the other day for a drink while I was in my midi frock feeling out of sorts. She was wearing summery cropped trousers (culottes really) and a camisole kind of top and it was suddenly EXACTLY what I also wanted to be wearing.

Does this help at all?!

I keep feeling drawn to my lovely collection of summer midis as they hang in the wardrobe but putting them on they just don’t feel right this year.

Yes this is it! Suddenly i’m just not feeling it.

I think block colours and separates and different shapes (wide leg trousers) are feeling right.

I’m definitely not one to slavishly follow style but what other people are wearing filters through and impacts how you are feeling about yourself.

Literally midi dresses are 90% of my wardrobe so this feels quite catastrophic!

Just wear what you like, no need to be “devastated”!

Floisme · 20/06/2025 07:32

I don’t wear dresses so I’ve no skin whatsoever in this game but it always fascinates me when something you like starts to look just a little bit ‘off’ and how, if you say anything, some people get really defensive or sanctimonious. Don’t worry op, a prophet is never appreciated in their own country.

ResidentPorker · 20/06/2025 07:32

You know you’re still allowed to wear them, right?

HedwigIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/06/2025 07:35

Cassiope · 20/06/2025 07:05

Bring back the (just above) knee length dress and the longer shorts/shorts culottes! I've never liked midi length and will be delighted to have more choice.

Whilst we're at it - no more summer dresses with long sleeves. If it's hot enough for me to wear a dress I don't want my arms swathed in fabric.

I have fat arms so they do need to make dresses that have sleeves too.

xhines · 20/06/2025 07:36

The casual-ish midi dress look has been dated for years now, it’s the skinny jean equivalent (same time frame as well). Formal midis will always be classic. Relaxed trousers are the way to go - wide leg or tapered.

I wear spanx arm tights under my sleeveless dresses

I posted earlier saying I’ll never stop wearing midi dresses because I don’t have the legs for minis (or for knee length for that matter). But I do get what you mean here, and I’ve been really enjoying wearing wide cropped trousers this summer, especially at work. I feel a bit chic in them actually.

myplace · 20/06/2025 07:41

My knees must be covered.

However my denim wide leg jumpsuit is awesome and the only thing I want to wear at the moment. Heat aside.

All in one is the way to go and I’m going to quietly ditch all my separates in favour of them. Perhaps just for summer. Maybe I’ll keep separates for winter…

GreySkyAtNight · 20/06/2025 07:42

I've been seeing a fair amount of cropped wide leg trousers in London.

I don't think the midi is out though.
Honestly there are people still rocking skinny jeans in London!
