I hoped this day would never come…I think the midi dress is actually over

I know it’s been known for quite a some time that the midi / midaxi dress has past it’s style peak. But until now I’ve still felt very comfortable with my wardrobe full of long dresses (so easy to wear!).

But yesterday, wearing a long shirt dress which felt totally chic a couple of years ago, it felt a bit dated, a bit bland, a bit boring. I felt everyone who looked cool was wearing something different and the (many) midi dresses being worn all looked a bit sad.

I am devastated. I’ve been a fully signed up member of Team Midi Dress and I’m not ready to give them up!

What were the non-midi-dress people wearing?

You’ll have to tear my midi dresses out of my cold dead hands.

I don’t have the legs for minis. Love a maxi but I’m short so they always trail in the ground. Midi is the only length that works.

ETA didn’t mean to quote OP!

RayonSunrise · 19/06/2025 23:29

Midis show no sign of giving up the ghost just yet, OP. I was in London for a gig recently (wearing black linen kick flares and a waistcoat, flat sandles) and I was surrounded by summer midis.

Maybe they’ll be over in another couple of years? I recall skinny jeans took quite a while to go, too.

Pinkrosesyellowroses · 19/06/2025 23:32

I wore a midi dress today and it was just the ticket.

Overtheatlantic · 19/06/2025 23:32

I think they appeal to enough of us to be considered a classic.

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 19/06/2025 23:50

There will always be a demand for some kind of longer length dress.

And until they start making maxi dresses for those of us less than 6 feet tall (seriously, I’m 5’5 and even petite maxi dresses are too long - WTF?), then.i can’t see midi dresses going anywhere.

LeaveALittleNote · 20/06/2025 00:06

I prefer maxi dresses so I won’t be bothered if midi dresses start to fade out of the shops. Not keen on short dresses though.
I’m curious to know what the people were wearing that you thought looked cool?

Newmeagain · 20/06/2025 00:09

Yes, me too ! I really want to know what the cool people are wearing.

JohnTheRevelator · 20/06/2025 00:18

A midi dress is a maxi on me, and a shorter one is a midi on me. As for maxis,I don't bother as I look like I'm melting and find I'm constantly tripping over the hem. And I'm not even really short,I'm 5 ft 5 in.

PinkyBear · 20/06/2025 00:20

I’m 5’2 so midis are full length on me. I’m not giving them up!

TheChosenTwo · 20/06/2025 00:22

Well dd has just made me a midaxi dress (okay she’s got a bit more left to do on the buttons?!) and I can’t fucking wait to wear it!
Fashionable or not, It’s totally me and my style, long button down dress - no one gets to decide what you like!

Oh yes they are total ubiquitous still but I think maybe that’s the problem!

OP, what are people wearing then??

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/06/2025 06:40

Wear what you like.

ShadesOfPemberley · 20/06/2025 06:41

I think I know what you mean OP. I’ve gone out a couple of times this week wearing summery midi dresses and (I can’t explain why) felt ALL WRONG. I’ve also gone out wearing linen trousers/vest top and felt ALL RIGHT. So is it a trouser thing?! I actually haven’t noticed what passers-by are wearing (too busy feeling either wrong in my dress or fabulous in my trousers 🤣) but I did meet a friend the other day for a drink while I was in my midi frock feeling out of sorts. She was wearing summery cropped trousers (culottes really) and a camisole kind of top and it was suddenly EXACTLY what I also wanted to be wearing.

Does this help at all?!

I keep feeling drawn to my lovely collection of summer midis as they hang in the wardrobe but putting them on they just don’t feel right this year.

Thingamebobwotsit · 20/06/2025 06:48

I think the dress length is fine, and lots of people are still wearing long dresses/skirts, but the I am seriously hoping the flouncy style is going to wane soon. I look awful in them and suit a much more tailored look. The extra fabric just swamps me.

Why don’t you wear what you want - does it matter to you what others are wearing?

spoonbillstretford · 20/06/2025 06:56

I find that now I've lost some weight, I'm wanting to wear things that are a bit shorter or more fitted. But most things in my usual shops are loose fitting and lack shape or tailoring, even dresses, particularly with the trend to wear things a little oversized.

I'm a bit over dresses generally as I feel like it's all I've felt comfortable in for work for ten years or more. This year I'm definitely wearing more separates as they look better on me now.

TakeMe2Insanity · 20/06/2025 06:58

I drive past a tube station in the mornings and women are wearing: long dresses, long skirts, palazzo/wide legged trousers. People not going to work in cycling shorts. Secondary school girls in micro minis.

Wear what makes you feel good.

spoonbillstretford · 20/06/2025 07:00

And I don't think the midi dress has ever been a thing for younger adults. My DDs don't own one between them. It even took me ages in my late 30s/40s to get my head round midi length at all being fashionable as when I was younger I wouldn't have been seen dead in that length either. Had to be short or full length and nothing in between!

Cassiope · 20/06/2025 07:05

Bring back the (just above) knee length dress and the longer shorts/shorts culottes! I've never liked midi length and will be delighted to have more choice.

Whilst we're at it - no more summer dresses with long sleeves. If it's hot enough for me to wear a dress I don't want my arms swathed in fabric.

Hdpr · 20/06/2025 07:06

Maxis have been in fashion for decades and will never go out of style in my opinion.
i have a wardrobe full of midis as that’s the length at the moment but i will be happy when they phase out. I don’t think that length is flattering at all!
But I think you’ve got a year or two before midis leave us

Guavafish1 · 20/06/2025 07:08

I like midis…. There is always a place in women fashion for them same as maxi/mini

Yes knee length is perfect and no to long sleeve summer dresses.

Why on earth are you following trends like a slave to fashion?!
So sad.
Wear what you want!
