I hoped this day would never come…I think the midi dress is actually over

I know it’s been known for quite a some time that the midi / midaxi dress has past it’s style peak. But until now I’ve still felt very comfortable with my wardrobe full of long dresses (so easy to wear!).

But yesterday, wearing a long shirt dress which felt totally chic a couple of years ago, it felt a bit dated, a bit bland, a bit boring. I felt everyone who looked cool was wearing something different and the (many) midi dresses being worn all looked a bit sad.

I am devastated. I’ve been a fully signed up member of Team Midi Dress and I’m not ready to give them up!

Midis show no sign of giving up the ghost just yet, OP. I was in London for a gig recently (wearing black linen kick flares and a waistcoat, flat sandles) and I was surrounded by summer midis.

Maybe they’ll be over in another couple of years? I recall skinny jeans took quite a while to go, too.

😮Skinny jeans are gone? lol, don't tell my wardrobe

LavenderBlue19 · 20/06/2025 07:45

I definitely feel like wide-legged light trousers and a t-shirt or cami top are having a fashionable moment, but midi dresses are still everywhere too.

Wide-legged trousers don't suit me so I'll stick with dresses thanks!

Fantailsflitting · 20/06/2025 07:45

The demise of the maxi and the shirt dress can't come soon enough for me. Nothing chic about trailing round in a long shapeless sack type garment. Why is it easier to wear than a shorter dress with some shape?

sandgrown · 20/06/2025 07:46

I love dresses and I don’t love my knees so I will always wear midi/maxi dresses. The current linen mid calf culottes are exactly what M&S were slated for selling only a few years ago ! I am not tall enough to look elegant in wide pants though I do love them . I will stick with what I feel good in .

Bikergran · 20/06/2025 07:46

Cassiope · 20/06/2025 07:05

Bring back the (just above) knee length dress and the longer shorts/shorts culottes! I've never liked midi length and will be delighted to have more choice.

Whilst we're at it - no more summer dresses with long sleeves. If it's hot enough for me to wear a dress I don't want my arms swathed in fabric.

Where are you seeing summer dresses with long sleeves? I can't find anything other than sleeveless or cap sleeves, and I have awful upper arms, so end up with cardigans or bolero tops, which are even hotter. Unless you mean the ghastly "depressed Victorian governess" dresses in various shades of poo which have been lurking everywhere. Vile.

Yes this is it! Suddenly i’m just not feeling it.

I think block colours and separates and different shapes (wide leg trousers) are feeling right.

I’m definitely not one to slavishly follow style but what other people are wearing filters through and impacts how you are feeling about yourself.

Literally midi dresses are 90% of my wardrobe so this feels quite catastrophic!

I couldn't care less if every single woman was wearing trousers, you will never see me wearing them in summer. And I will never wear wide leg trousers at any time of year. I prefer to wear what I like and what suits me, and I never feel bad about myself.

Delphigirl · 20/06/2025 07:49

I was at ascot yesterday and stood on the balcony above the royal enclosure with a very stylish friend and we really struggled to point out the people who were well dressed. Masses of long flouncy floral maxi dresses with puff or balloon sleeves that just looked terrible (tiered skirts AND balloon sleeves AND busy floral - just no), lots of midi or maxi all over lace gowns with long sleeves (all the lace gowns looked awful, really awful, see Carol Middleton at ascot a few days ago for an egregious example), and lots of midi dresses that just suddenly felt a bit per Una. The people who we said “now she is stylish” were often wearing elegant palazzo trousers either as a jumpsuit maybe with a halter neck or with a waistcoat, or they were wearing proper simple well fitting structured day dresses in a single colour or non-floral pattern (some nice small paisleys etc), or were wearing dresses ending at or just below the knee.

But it all looked a bit of a mess really.

It's OK, they're coming back already 😁

goldfishbowl2025 · 20/06/2025 07:50

This is interesting as I’m going to London tmrw in a heat wave - staring at my wide leg light cotton jeans and thinking it’s probably them with a white tshirt … or a cream maxi I’ve got but yes the midis like anything shin length I feel would be ok for hols and that’s it - I’ve noticed a lot of shorts - tailored shorts too.

sadly I’m a large lady so this is not good!

MaryBeardsShoes · 20/06/2025 07:51

Cropped wide legged trousers are really ugly so that tracks about them being in I guess!

Wonderfulstuff · 20/06/2025 07:52

I'm probably wearing more maxis tbh. Although slightly perilous on London's many escalators!

But I work in the City and I was on the bus once and overheard two merchandisers for All Saints talking about why everyone one looked so old fashioned in the City. So I wouldn't say I was at the cutting edge of the hip and happening London scene! 😄

Cassiope · 20/06/2025 07:53

@myplace
I love the elegance of jumpsuits, but I’m flat-chested and only wear a bra for sport, so they’re a complete no-go for me: even in a single-sex toilet I'd feel vulnerable stripping to the waist to wee. I admire from a distance.

Also, to be fair, ‘elegance’ is rarely my priority!

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 20/06/2025 07:54

Doubleraspberry · 20/06/2025 07:16

I still can’t wear them. Partly because they stop at the least flattering place for me and partly because I just feel like my mum. To me they still feel frumpy.

Me too. I have shorter dresses and I have maxi dresses but midi feels like my mum in Laura Ashley.

partyboat356 · 20/06/2025 07:56

Sorry I'm confused. Is midi-dress knee-length and maxi-dress ankle-length?

aspidernamedfluffy · 20/06/2025 07:56

If you like wearing them and they are comfortable then carry on. Who actually cares deep down what the current trend is?

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 20/06/2025 07:58

I'm a bit out of the loop - what length is in now, in place of midi length? Is it maxi? Or are we saying trousers feel more current than skirts/dresses? What length are you seeing, OP?

HelenCurlyBrown · 20/06/2025 07:58

Midi dresses are awful on me. I’m fairly tall and they stop at the widest part of my calf, rendering me instantly frumpy.

earlgreyandlemon · 20/06/2025 07:59

Huh?

Midi is just a word to describe the length of a dress.

There is never going to be a time when it's not OK to wear a dress of one length or another. (Well the only ones that seem controversial at times are the super mini ones but even then, people will always wear them).

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about!

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in.

bostonchamps · 20/06/2025 08:01

Hard hat on as I say this but where are all of these stylish midi dress wearers in London people keep saying they're seeing 😂

I live and work here, and everyone wearing midi dresses are either the kind of people who think nothing of blocking the entire aisle with their pram in Gail's, or people who don't know to stand on the right and walk on the left.

And no, I'm not saying London is the centre of the fashion world, but people seem to use it as a barometer on here.

I'm meeting a friend for lunch today, I'll wear Bermuda denim shorts with a boyfriend cut t shirt or linen men's shirt tucked in. Dinner with DH tonight will probably be a butter yellow pair of linen cigarette trousers and another (sage green) baggy t shirt with gold birks. If you're not feeling the midi OP, the midi shouldn't be feeling you Wink

skippy67 · 20/06/2025 08:02

Devastated and catastrophic? Nah, just wear your midis. You'll be fine. 😊

skippy67 · 20/06/2025 08:06

In other words, you're wearing what you like, and what you think suits you. Fab.

SomethingFun · 20/06/2025 08:07

I’m not having what I wear in my life dictated to me by someone whose job is to make money from making me feel insecure about my body and my taste and that I’m only acceptable in the current seasonal uniform from a few specific shops.

My dress I get most compliments on is a flouncy off the shoulder bright yellow midi and I look marvellous in it 😁

A midi dress is a maxi on me, and a shorter one is a midi on me. As for maxis,I don't bother as I look like I'm melting and find I'm constantly tripping over the hem. And I'm not even really short,I'm 5 ft 5 in.

Edited

Same! I’m 5’4 so these are the perfect length for me. The traditional maxi is lethal…trailing about 6” on the floor!

And as for shopping in Next…forget it! Even their ‘regular’ length dresses/skirts/trousers appear to me made for women over 5’10 😩😔 I recently bought a pair of regular length ‘Capri Pants’ from there and they are ‘normal length trousers’ on me 🤣🥴 It’s ridiculous really, as the average height woman in the UK is 5’5, so surely ‘regular’ length should be for women who are this height?

SomethingFun · 20/06/2025 08:11

You can be happy with how you look without dragging other women down you know
