I hoped this day would never come…I think the midi dress is actually over

I know it’s been known for quite a some time that the midi / midaxi dress has past it’s style peak. But until now I’ve still felt very comfortable with my wardrobe full of long dresses (so easy to wear!).

But yesterday, wearing a long shirt dress which felt totally chic a couple of years ago, it felt a bit dated, a bit bland, a bit boring. I felt everyone who looked cool was wearing something different and the (many) midi dresses being worn all looked a bit sad.

I am devastated. I’ve been a fully signed up member of Team Midi Dress and I’m not ready to give them up!

Erm.... I don't read Style and Beauty. Why on earth are you saying this?
It's the very last thing I would read.

You're reading it now, baby!

RayonSunrise · 24/06/2025 12:33

Oh come now, @FountainsSummer. Even of you’d not registered you were reading and actively participating in a thread on the Style & Beauty board (and I am aware some people just treat “Active” like it’s a home page), the thread title makes it very clear people will be talking about dresses and trends. Why would you choose to join it just to tell people off for talking about something you’re not interested in?

Late to the party but I’ve been wondering whether the DRESS …nevermind the midi dress…is over?!

It’s been roasting in London for a week, I commute from a London suburb into central London five days a week, and I could count on my hands how many dresses or skirts I’ve seen. It’s been SO noticeable. Almost all women, of all ages and styles, are wearing some sort of trousers.

Is it because we all agree that 95% of dresses in shops are horrible? Or has fashion changed?

SwimSwamSwimSwam · 24/06/2025 21:25

I'm not doing flowery this year.

Cassiope · 24/06/2025 21:31

I'm a WFHer in a Yorkshire city, but I've always wondered who bought all the dresses, especially the midi dresses, that seem to have been all over the Internet like a rash for several years, because I rarely see anyone in a dress. What is popular round here is the sleeveless tunic or longline blouse, worn with 3/4 leggings or cropped trousers, depending on the age or obesity of the wearer.

MaleficentQueen · 24/06/2025 21:36

I’m fat and short, and I love a good midi dress.

They’re comfortable, help me keep cool in the summer, and keep all my wobbly bits covered up. Perfect! 😂

I don’t think I could go back to knee length dresses, now. I feel like they’re almost too short for my liking.

MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast · 24/06/2025 22:09

It HAS to midi for me because manufacturers just don't get it for tall women.

mini - really comes out mini on a tall woman. Can't sit down without indecently exposing myself.

maxi - is not maxi when it's made for a five feet six woman. Looks like my hemline had an argument with my ankles but isn't quite buddies with my calves either 🙄

midi - lands somewhere in the middle and by this point I'm not fussy where 😂

That’s interesting - I’ve seen lots of dresses over the last week - including today - both in my office and in central London (Farringdon, if you want specifics). Perhaps it’s hyper localised.

My bet is socks. Trainer socks are out of fashion but crew socks are tricky to pull off with a dress. Wide leg trousers are easy with socks and trainers. It's too hot for tights.

Yes this is another readon for my love of the midi, particularly when they have a tie waist - I often cut off the belt loops then tie it where my waist actually falls not round the base of my ribs. Or the more voluminous ones with no waist at all are even better.

I love wide legged trousers but they look daft if they’re flapping about two inches above your ankle.

Personally I love a dress and wear all lengths in all weather's.....except really hot weather.
After a certain point I just CBA and prefer some sort of baggy trouser/vest/no make up look!

I like and agree with this theory, BUT - sandals. Even Gen Z avoids socks with sandals, and in really hot weather sandals beat trainers even on a commute.

I saw a lot of women in dresses and sandals last week in Zone 1 West London. Maybe (to allude briefly to another thread) “no dresses” is a London micro trend?

Don't even get me started on :

  • jumpsuits
  • teddies/rompers/lingerie thingys
  • shorts (particularly pj ones)
  • swimsuits

Good point, although I've seen Gen Z wear socks with Birkenstocks (mainly clogs tbf). Also fisherman sandals, I have to admit to thinking this looks good and might try it myself.

There were definitely plenty dresses in my city last week, although I wasn't in a particularly stylish area.

Sorry, I asked what you meant about shorts and swimsuits then realised you meant being tall so I deleted it.

None of which sound sound fashionable, or indeed stylish.

I think you’re right! I work in Shoreditch. Very few dresses seen today. Went out after work to Hammersmith and it was midi dresses galore.

Steelworks · 26/06/2025 05:19

Met a friend in a department store cafe yesterday. There were several groups of mums and babies/toddlers Lots of midi or maxi dresses being worn.

I do think the dress/white trainer/denim jacket combo looks dated, although in the summer, there are plenty of sandal options. Possibly this look will re-emerge come autumn.

keep waiting for skirts to make a comeback. Fashion articles have been hinting at it fir a couple of years now, especially the demon skirt, but it hasn’t quite taken iff.

Daffodilsarefading · 26/06/2025 06:28

I always wore trousers when I was younger. I had several pairs of linen trousers and would team them with a sleeveless fitted top.
My dresses were always knee length, or slightly above, shift dresses. I started wearing midi dresses with sleeves as I got older and fatter. They work for me as I find them far more practical.
I don’t buy anything sleeveless as I don’t like my arm. Plus I don’t feel comfortable with my underarms exposed at work, it’s just not professional. I want something a decent length for practical reasons. I don’t really like myself in shorts either.
My DCs don’t wear midi dresses. They tend to wear shorts in summer. If they wear a dress, it’s far less practical than one I’d wear. Tends to be backless or with cut outs, that sort of thing.

Okay, now I want a demon skirt and I am starting the trend right here, right now!

I've got a denim skirt on today and I've got a new one for my holidays.
