I hoped this day would never come…I think the midi dress is actually over

I know it’s been known for quite a some time that the midi / midaxi dress has past it’s style peak. But until now I’ve still felt very comfortable with my wardrobe full of long dresses (so easy to wear!).

But yesterday, wearing a long shirt dress which felt totally chic a couple of years ago, it felt a bit dated, a bit bland, a bit boring. I felt everyone who looked cool was wearing something different and the (many) midi dresses being worn all looked a bit sad.

I am devastated. I’ve been a fully signed up member of Team Midi Dress and I’m not ready to give them up!

I will carry on wearing my maxi and midi dresses. I think they look good. Definitely a lot better than cropped trousers which I hate. Trousers flapping around mid leg look awful

Verbena17 · 20/06/2025 09:24

Try being someone with wide calves, who hates anything higher than the ankle!
Havent been able to find anything ‘maxi dress’ that suits my whole body anywhere for years! I’ve stuck to maxi skirts (not many of those either) from Seasalt.

For pear shapes or people with larger hips, thighs and calves, cutting you off right in the middle of your lower leg can look really unflattering, so I’ve avoided anything like that.i haven’t seen a shortage of midis this summer - they’re everywhere!

ungratefulcat · 20/06/2025 09:02

True. But we wouldn't have worn them when they were "in fashion" either

(Not least because I wasn't even born when they were a fashion!)

Yeah, you would have done! They were The Thing.

Why on earth are you following trends like a slave to fashion?!
So sad.
Wear what you want!

To be fair it’s in Style & Beauty, which many of us follow because we’re interested in it. If you don’t want to follow it or take an interest in latest cuts or styles that’s fine but don’t denigrate those that do. Horses for courses and all that.

But midi is anything ankle or above. I also hate things that cut the calf at its widest point, but have lots of longer midis.

Midis show no sign of giving up the ghost just yet, OP. I was in London for a gig recently (wearing black linen kick flares and a waistcoat, flat sandles) and I was surrounded by summer midis.

Maybe they’ll be over in another couple of years? I recall skinny jeans took quite a while to go, too.

skinny jeans are not gone. Those wide leg jobs make me look like the south end of an elephant going north.

Newusernameforthiss · 20/06/2025 09:30

I honestly cannot imagine giving a shit about what other people are wearing. Wear your dresses til they fall apart!

Justsomethoughts23 · 20/06/2025 09:31

LeaveALittleNote · 20/06/2025 08:55

I was thinking the same. I’m tired of reading all the predictable responses from people who think they’re superior because they’re not interested in fashion.

This!! These people are so sanctimonious and smug in how they really don’t care about fashion…. but are willingly spending their own time posting on a fashion thread…

lilacao · 20/06/2025 09:33

Prise them out of my cold, dead hands!

Same, somewhere low shin is the sweet spot for me between flattering and practical. Nothing flouncy though, always quite streamlined.

Surely ankle length is maxi?

it's an odd one. i'm not a 'not carer' about fashion, i have an interest in seeing what is in/out.. i'm just not someone that wears it.. i am (as i said upthread) a goth, so what i wear day to day is rarely, if ever 'in fashion' unless fashion decides to step into goth/rock/dark academia as it does occasionally.. and then i get to have a field day buying all the things. I had a brief 3-4 year fling with bright print dresses alongside my goth tendencies that i have since rehomed to other 50s style fans while i've gone back to black with a small pop of colour here and there.

My irritation and 'wear what you like' stance comes from following a style, not fashion in what i wear... they're 2 separate things, and when people suddenly declare 90% of their wardrobe as 'out' in todays society of waste, it doesn't sit right.

Midi length dresses will never go out of style, even if they're not in fashion, because not everyone has the stature or figure to pull off mini/maxi.

Floisme · 20/06/2025 09:40

I'd say that given the way the thread has been trending, a lot of people do care very much about this, even if they don't like to admit it. If you've taken the trouble to open the thread - the topic was pretty clear - read the op and post a response, then I think you've outed yourself.

Anyways - and like I've said, I'm not a dress wearer but I like to watch - I don't think it's necessarily the midi length that's moving on, I think it's more that particular style of floral dress. There are lots of other ways midis could go - block colours, geometric prints, more fitted shape (although that's maybe less likely because it requires more skill to make them and a lot of people wouldn't pay). Plenty of life in them yet, I think.

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 19/06/2025 23:50

There will always be a demand for some kind of longer length dress.

And until they start making maxi dresses for those of us less than 6 feet tall (seriously, I’m 5’5 and even petite maxi dresses are too long - WTF?), then.i can’t see midi dresses going anywhere.

Haha I am 6ft tall and all maxi dresses are midi dresses on me

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/06/2025 09:41

HedwigIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/06/2025 07:35

I have fat arms so they do need to make dresses that have sleeves too.

Better than sunblock, too. I spend half my time online looking for dresses with sleeves for winter and summer alike.

Gowlett · 20/06/2025 09:45

At 50, I like to feel good in my clothes.
But, I know nobody cares what I’m wearing!

Doubleraspberry · 20/06/2025 09:34

Bottom of ankle would be maxi - kind of touching your feet. Higher on your ankle is midi.

Sounds like a fine distinction granted, but gives a very different look.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/06/2025 09:49

The great benefit of not being style conscious: nothing is ever out of fashion 😁 Wear what makes you feel good.

I care about clothes and what looks best on me but I don’t necessarily wear what others are wearing. I still wear white trainers and a denim jacket with my dresses -because I like the way I look.

There isn’t a right or wrong style.

Boxfreshrussell · 20/06/2025 09:52

I agree with others it’s not the length but the style and fabric that you could update.

Skinnies haven’t actually gone though have they? You can still buy them. People still wear them. We should wear what we want and not be dictated to by the media.

IfNot · 20/06/2025 09:57

It’s so true- as a pp said- that manufacturers love the tiered, shirred, elasticated sack dress cos it’s cheap and easy to produce.
I totally get you OP, I woke up yesterday, went to get dressed for work and just wailed “ I hate all my clothes!!!”
I don’t have any frou frou puffy sleeve stuff stuff, but even the “ ok” loose chambray midi dress and the wide cropped trousers just feel frumpy and meh.
Actually, I realised a) I look awful in cropped trousers and b) so does everyone else!
I think the silhouette is feeling longer in the leg, leaner, and with less pattern. And with skirt lengths, short looks fresh. I was in Paris last summer and the women there wear much shorter ( at all ages).

Midi is actually mid calf- or used to be. About 6 inches above the ankle.

I think many manufacturers now make clothes for models over 6 ft and forget most women are around 5 5".

LizzieLazzie · 20/06/2025 10:01

More tailored clothing is in for AW25/26. Fitted waistcoats are the current nod to ease us into it. Fitted below the knee pencil skirts will be everywhere apparently so if you want to get ahead of the trend … Personally, give me a free and breezy midi dress in this weather!

Melancholyflower · 20/06/2025 10:07

I've just gone onto the Zara website and searched midi dress and there are plenty. Obviously as it is summer, lots are strappy sundress type, but the length is still there, just not so much the patterned, flouncy dresses.
