I'm not really one for yearly trends - most of my stuff is ancient/well-loved and fairly timeless - but I've just got my big bag of summer stuff out and it's weird how some of it is starting to look a bit off, somehow.

My denim jacket needs retiring for a while, I think - I put it on and it looked weirdly early 2000s, which has never bothered me before! I think a much wider silhouette for trousers is common now, but you'll have to pry my tapered linen cigarette pants from my cold dead hands. I also love simple mid-thigh shorts with pockets, and I still like how those look, but I'm a bit lost skirts and dresses-wise - don't really know what I want to wear this year in that regard. I could also do with a new casual jacket - maybe a sort of cropped chore jacket style with two front pockets. I'll have a look on Vinted.

What are you buying for spring/summer and what are you still wearing after 10/15 years?

There's a lot of crochet around this year too. I saw a nice crochet cardigan in Next but can't decide on the ecru or red so I might just treat myself to both.

Livingbytheocean · 14/04/2025 14:58

I have decided to have a whimsical summer. Lace, cream, pearls, overtly feminine style. I like the pastel checks and stripes for mid summer. I am embracing my femininity.

Ronsealit · 14/04/2025 15:00

I’ve got a cropped River Island jacket I bought when I was at uni 20 years ago, not sure how it’s survived this long but I’m thrilled to be wearing it again!

I get this totally, I'm cautious of looking like an extra member of Bewitched 😂

I'm particularly into the PJ type trousers I've bought some really nice ones, I've just had a hysterectomy and jeans aren't comfy yet. I can dress them up or down depending if I'm leaving the house. Still wanting to look reasonably put together.

Can you tell me more about the trousers you’ve bought? I’m eyeing some silky ones on Zara but they don’t have an elastic waist which is putting me off ordering

@happytobemrsg

Yesterday I wore some cream canvas Rew Para trousers (photo attached of the trouser style from Rew’s website) with a khaki Yacco Maricard asymmetric shirt and my favourite red Walsh trainers. Super-comfy and practical but also ideal for a margarita sitting outside the Truman Brewery. 😜

You should definitely add your outfits to the OOTD thread, they sound brilliant 🤩

Octopusespunchforfun · 14/04/2025 15:46

I’m going to say something then run and hide as probably won’t be popular.

Theres lots of young (and I imagine) trendy girls/women around here and I think the current fashion looks sloppy!

Long gypsy skirts and baggy hoodies, long wide leg jeans with ratty dirty hems and oversized sweatshirts.

Wide leg jeans are already starting to look dated to me and the amount of people wearing Brown/ Green Gazelles/Sambas! A whole group of girls walked past me all with coloured Adidas on, where’s the originality?

Runs and hides

Just by way of warning, I’ve also made the Style Arc Bobs and the pattern instructions were very, very sparse. So while I agree they’re very straightforward to make (and I’m happy with how they turned out) I think I’d have struggled if I hadn’t made trousers before.

Thank you @Floisme, that's good to know. I've made pj trousers (a very long time ago) and a couple of dresses and skirts, but it may be that I need to come back to MN for sewing advice!

I think that was lost sometime in the 00s tbh. Shops are their offer are much more homogeneous now whereas they used to have more of their own handwriting. A 17 yr old could wear the same as a 60 yr old today whereas my mum and her friends dressed differently to me. And as with the adidas if something is in, it's everywhere.

HelenHywater · 14/04/2025 19:42

My 24 year old daughter took a very old Kew denim jacket of mine this weekend - she looks really good in it (worn with the ubiquitous gazelles) It briefly made me want to keep it, but it's too cropped on me - my dd is a few inches shorter. That said, I am looking for a denim jacket (I think I'll go for the Levi's one) as I saw a nice one on an instagram post (worn with navy wide leg trousers) but have never worn one with a summer dress and white trainers.

Personally, not that I'm current, as well as the denim jacket, I'm looking for a pair of white baggy or barrel leg jeans and some mesh ballet flats. I like the idea of puma or similar trainers with at least some red on them, but probably don't need anymore trainers right now.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/04/2025 20:01

I have a couple of pairs of mesh flats from Vivaia that I bought last year including these Mary Janes in beige mesh as well as a black mesh pointed toe flat.

www.vivaia.com/item/square-toe-mary-jane-margot-mary-jane-p_10029761.html?gid=10029751

I get them on Vinted (although the mesh ones only come up occasionally) for around £30. I usually have stupidly expensive taste in shoes (Tracey Neuls should be sponsored by me 😂) but the Vivaia ones are quite handy if you pick the right style (some are very frumpy) as you can chuck them in the washing machine and they’re very durable (they’re made from recycled plastic bottles) so hard to trash but surprisingly comfy. A nice cheaper option for summer (I bought my first pair for tramping around Texas Hill Country in the July heat while wanting to look chic but still be able to get my feet wet / dusty and not worry about ruining my shoes).

CanOfMangoTango · 14/04/2025 21:21

I love Rew too, some of my fave clothes are from there.

Get on the preloved fb group (some bargains there) and also Rachel does live shopping for one offs, which don't make it to the website.

Marks, Next, Roman,.New Look, Halara and supermarkets.

Mainly black with polka dots etc.

Daffodilsarefading · 15/04/2025 07:53

I absolutely love spotted clothes and polka dots. Recently bought a black and white spotted dress from vinted and some spotted slingbacks.
It’s a no from me for gingham. When the children were little I made them gingham dresses so it’s too childlike for me.
Also no to double denim. I lived in denim as a teenager and don’t want to relive that.
I’m still wearing white trainers, they go with everything and trainers have to be comfortable, so I go for comfort over style. If I want style I’ll buy heels. I can’t wear ballet shoes, too flat and have been advised to avoid them at all costs by my doctor.

FannyBawz · 15/04/2025 08:09

Suede jackets
silk bombers
Double denim
massive palazzo jeans
tank tops!

the only thing I’m hating is the head to toe beige 🤮

LaRevolution · 15/04/2025 10:08

Same re the beige @FannyBawz! Although I do like the occasional beige jumper.

I'm a sucker for sandals and trying not to buy more at the moment - I'm a bit sick of the clunky black DM style and have dug out a pair of flat leather Aspiga ones which are very minimalist - unfortunately I have a feeling I put them to the back of the wardrobe because they weren't very comfy. I also have Tevas, and some nice tan leather backstrap slides from John Lewis a few years ago which still look good - I do NOT need more sandals.

OP posts:
polkaloca · 15/04/2025 10:17

You can never have too many sandals!

anon2022anon · 15/04/2025 11:05

I do need more black sandals as mine were too worn at the end of the summer. I like these as I would like gold hardware, but £59 for PU seems very steep.

I also have these brown ones on my list to purchase when they're back in stock in my size

polkaloca · 15/04/2025 11:13

Agree, Im not a fan of PU & they are expensive. I like the brown ones.

These are the ones I am desperate for, I know they would sell out so it's my own fault 😭

I'm with you on double denim. Awful. It reminds me a lot of 80s era Neighbours. And not in a good way.

£59 for PU is outrageous. Wtf?!! The details say it’s “natural PU”. What on earth is natural about PU? For that price, I’d at least expect it to be referred to as “vegan leather”.😂

Vegan leather always makes me laugh. Friend of mine was impressed by some vegan leather, had totally fallen for it, I was like blimey the shoes are plastic and over £100 put them down!

happytobemrsg · 15/04/2025 14:35

I definitely need sandals. What style is current? Are chunky sandals still in?

I think I'd definitely be a member of Bewitched in my double denim as they're the same colour - both light blue. God, could that be more 80s? Not even cool enough for the 90s! 😂

I'd see Double Denim and think Status Quo ( which is my DD wouldn't let me out of the door in my denim jacket and jeggings - I don't wear jeans but my jeggings are lovely)

"Hmmm " I think " you've still got it"
"No you don't, poundshop Francis Rossi" she scorns " get changed "

Animal print is still around , I am on holiday at the moment and it is everywhere, which is nice I think. Love me some animal print .
