I'm not really one for yearly trends - most of my stuff is ancient/well-loved and fairly timeless - but I've just got my big bag of summer stuff out and it's weird how some of it is starting to look a bit off, somehow.

My denim jacket needs retiring for a while, I think - I put it on and it looked weirdly early 2000s, which has never bothered me before! I think a much wider silhouette for trousers is common now, but you'll have to pry my tapered linen cigarette pants from my cold dead hands. I also love simple mid-thigh shorts with pockets, and I still like how those look, but I'm a bit lost skirts and dresses-wise - don't really know what I want to wear this year in that regard. I could also do with a new casual jacket - maybe a sort of cropped chore jacket style with two front pockets. I'll have a look on Vinted.

What are you buying for spring/summer and what are you still wearing after 10/15 years?

Stuff that's definitely in this season that I haven't seen mentioned:
Tomato red 🍅
Dropped waist, and if possible exaggerated hips to go with it
I've seen a few social media people who follow runways more seriously going for sheer- mesh at the bottom of dresses and trousers, and some sheer shorts
Tops, jumpers, blouses with a feature back- open, or a scarf, or a tie
Polka dots are everywhere this season- I'm taking advantage and stocking up, as I have done with leopard print!
Mary Janes and ballet pumps
Maxi, or mid calf, rather than midi- very glad on this one, it's a lot better length on me.
Quite intricate shapes and embellishments
2000 Chloe vibes- soft loose clothes, chiffon, wispy, flouncy but not too over the top.
Very voluminous bottoms

I don't wear a lot of this, as it doesn't suit me, but I've been quite surprised to see little to no 'trend' pieces suggested on here. There was a thread recently where someone wanted 'cool aunt' vibes, and 90% of the suggestions were midi dresses. Yes they're pretty and inoffensive, and if someone asks for a 'nice dress' great, but they absolutely don't scream cool aunt who works in fashion.

By 'on here's I mean the s&b board in general- this thread has felt a lot more current!

What is middle aged in your view -just curious

50s ish

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/04/2025 11:05

This thread has inspired me to dig out a lovely Dries van Noten polka dot pleated skirt that has been languishing unworn in my wardrobe for ages. I bought it in a sample sale and then forgot about it.

Tell me more about Japanese designer shirts!

@LaRevolution Have a look at Yacco Maricard pintuck shirts. I’m in love with them especially the asymmetric ones and have already acquired a small collection that are getting lots of compliments from people. Add that to my existing Pleats Please addiction (that’s been going on for years) and it appears that I’m in a Japanese phase. Actually I’m in an ‘avoiding ironing’ phase 😂 but the results are the same. 😛

I’m also wearing a lot of cropped trousers from Rew and trainers from Walsh, both of which form part of my ‘handmade in the UK by small independent businesses’ phase. I love a phase. 😂

I love absolutely everything about Pleats Please!! Goodness. That’s aspirational dressing for me right there. Love the tote bag especially. And the trousers. What sort of trousers do you wear with your Japanese shirts? I’m enjoying a less structured silhouette at the moment.

My take, for what it's worth, and happy to be corrected:
Barrel leg jeans & trousers
Coloured and flat trainers like Puma Speedcat
Lace skirts
Chocolate brown
Bubble hem skirts and dresses
Waistcoats worn with nothing underneath
Butter yellow
Knee-length wide shorts with long chunky boots (difficult to describe as it sounds ridiculous)
Blazers that are cinched in at the waist
Short-sleeved jumpers (preferably cashmere)
Mesh ballet flats
Suede bags

Any more??

A bowler hat and it's pretty much Blossom.

I have binned all my denim jackets as they’re too denim jacket/summer dress/plimsolls
also binned tapered chino style trews
Im into a bomber jacket instead and barrel legged jeans. I’m also off patterns, preferring a more limited range of colour. Dresses - I feel a longer tighter dress suits me better than those puff sleeved things. In short - I’m dressing for my shape more. And.bloom on instagram is my clothes dream

I’ve also ditched patterns. The only pattern I have is a couple of striped cardigans. I stick to a pretty rigid colour palette as well - black, white, navy, grey & greens (I’m a winter). I have the odd yellow or pink item which fits in well with my colours & stops me from getting bored. Everything goes with everything else & makes it very easy to put outfits together. It’s the first season I’ve done this & I love it.

FoxedByACat · 14/04/2025 11:58

Denim jackets, I’ve just bought a new one as I feel it’s a slightly different shape/style compared to my older classic denim jacket.

quilted jackets

midi skirts, especially gingham

wide leg trousers, gingham again is in. Leopard print also a potential.

barrel leg jeans/trousers.

boxy, loose t shirts rather than fitted tshirts. Especially graphic tshirts

bright trainers, especially Adidas.

bright, oversized chunky cardigans

LaRevolution · 14/04/2025 12:01

I can't foresee a time when I'll ever ditch stripes - I love them so ❤️

@anon2022anon, yes, tomato red! I don't own a single red item of clothing (and literally never have) but several times in the past few weeks I've seen someone on telly/Insta/out and about in that exact shade and thought how lovely it is.

Re animal print - I have a much-beloved and very old Hush sweater in grey leopard print that I won't be parted from, but otherwise I'm not feeling very inspired by animal-print at the mo.

That denim jacket you linked to @anon2022anon is what I'm after in a sort of warm beige/neutral colour, and a bit less rounded at the collar - there's a few on Vinted so I think I'll take a shot.

Re the gingham discussions - I saw some very cute gingham trews on Insta from a sewing lady, I think the pattern was hers too. My sewing is a bit rusty but I wondered whether to give them a whirl - I'd be sooo smug if I found a good pattern for summer trousers and could just run up a new pair as and when I fancied it.

@happytobemrsg

Yesterday I wore some cream canvas Rew Para trousers (photo attached of the trouser style from Rew’s website) with a khaki Yacco Maricard asymmetric shirt and my favourite red Walsh trainers. Super-comfy and practical but also ideal for a margarita sitting outside the Truman Brewery. 😜

polkaloca · 14/04/2025 12:02

@LaRevolution stripes are in

FoxedByACat · 14/04/2025 12:03

I just got some nice gingham trousers in Next and also some striped trousers.

Beyond Nine do nice trousers.

Oldmothershrubboard · 14/04/2025 12:06

I feel like Andy Pandy in stripes and Rupert bear in anything resembling a check.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/04/2025 12:08

@LaRevolution Tomato red is fabulous. Red is my favourite colour and fortunately suits me (I’m tall and blonde) so pretty much half my wardrobe is red. For years my rule of thumb has been “if in doubt, buy the red one”. 😂 I often wear head to toe red to the office (I work in Financial Services) and get lots of compliments. It’s my version of wearing all black. 😜 Quick and easy to throw on and no need to worry about matching. 😂

bumsntums · 14/04/2025 12:17

@LaRevolution Style Arc Bob or Barry pants are worth looking at if you want to try your hand at sewing some trousers. I've made some Bob pants & they are really easy (& have pockets!).
Very similar style to Beyond Nine mentioned already.

I'm making some Bob pants this week! Do you do the waistband separately (as per the pattern) or hack it and do a rolled over one?

I'm lazy and just fold over the top and thread through the elastic. It's a great pattern

anon2022anon · 14/04/2025 12:37

@HundredMilesAnHour that's definitely a buying technique I also subscribe too- red on blondes is always a winner!

RaraRachael · 14/04/2025 12:45

Wide leg trousers are very in but I hate them as they make me look fat and I feel clumsy in them.

I still have a Next denim jacket that's about 10 years old but will be making a reappearance this summer.
Not sure about dresses. I have a few floral ones that haven't been worn much so I'm still going to be wearing them.

Fruit is everywhere - strawberries and cherries plastered over everything. A bit like the trend a couple of years ago for having lemons everywhere.

LOVE these, thank you!! The Reeve culottes look lovely too. I could try them in a darkish solid cotton-linen blend, then wouldn't have to worry about matching a pattern.

@LaRevolution I wore some solid colour linen Bobs on a long haul flight last summer. They were perfect. I cba with pattern matching!

I've ordered the above as I like a coord & so hard to get long shorts (I'm tall). I love that polka dots are back so I really want a dress but not found it yet.

Love that & I'm not normally a fan of gingham! I also love the look of a co-ord but unfortunately don’t have many. I worry I look like I’m wearing pjs since I like them with wide leg trousers.

Will try it that way. I feel like making a separate waistband would add too much bulk

Floisme · 14/04/2025 14:26

Just by way of warning, I’ve also made the Style Arc Bobs and the pattern instructions were very, very sparse. So while I agree they’re very straightforward to make (and I’m happy with how they turned out) I think I’d have struggled if I hadn’t made trousers before.

Delatron · 14/04/2025 14:33

Im over denim jackets. They’ve been around for years. Loving all the suede jackets that are about.

Have bought lots of yellow and a few brown tops. Love wide legged trousers . Have my eye on some striped ones a la PJs!

Also bought a crochet top. I’ve been wearing waistcoats with nothing under for a few years so happy if that look is still in.
