I'm not really one for yearly trends - most of my stuff is ancient/well-loved and fairly timeless - but I've just got my big bag of summer stuff out and it's weird how some of it is starting to look a bit off, somehow.

My denim jacket needs retiring for a while, I think - I put it on and it looked weirdly early 2000s, which has never bothered me before! I think a much wider silhouette for trousers is common now, but you'll have to pry my tapered linen cigarette pants from my cold dead hands. I also love simple mid-thigh shorts with pockets, and I still like how those look, but I'm a bit lost skirts and dresses-wise - don't really know what I want to wear this year in that regard. I could also do with a new casual jacket - maybe a sort of cropped chore jacket style with two front pockets. I'll have a look on Vinted.

What are you buying for spring/summer and what are you still wearing after 10/15 years?

I'm with you on double denim. Awful. It reminds me a lot of 80s era Neighbours. And not in a good way.

It reminds me of Britney and Justin. That look has not aged well, it was awful even then!

Woodburnerisout · 16/04/2025 10:00

Ugh to double denim

JaninaDuszejko · 16/04/2025 14:29

Double denim is OK if you're doing it right, my 17 yo is currently wearing black wide legged jeans with a dark blue chambray shirt and it looks good.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 16/04/2025 14:39

I have never bought anything off Vinted in my life.
I am the only woman I know who never has.
Find it overwhelming.
I buy a few good quality things now and again, and often shop off season. So I will buy a winter coat that is last season in May, and summer stuff at Christmas. If you don’t mind being a season behind, which I don’t, you can get some bargains.
Have just bought a short, grey, cropped military jacket from & Other Stories which is lovely.
Tried to get some jeans from the new Zac Posen at Gap Collection - sold out.
Denim jackets - my fave was a soft denim one from Gap from 2000. I was a size 8 then though.
I am not anymore!
I struggle with skirts always have done.
Have just watched a lot of races coverage and so many outfits, head-to-toe, were from Shein.
I do know friends who buy all their holiday bits from there but it’s not for me.
Have seen a lovely lemon top and shorts set from Mint Velvet but it’s £180 for the set which is too much.

UpMyself · 16/04/2025 14:41

@PeggyMitchellsCameo ,I've never bought anything from Vinted either.

Floisme · 16/04/2025 15:33

Me neither. I've got the app for when the local second hand / vintage market finally dries up, and I do browse it sometimes but I struggle to get past the presentation. If people can't be bothered to iron their clothes and hang them straight before taking a photo then I can't be bothered doing business with them.

polkaloca · 16/04/2025 15:35

I've got into Vinted but I only buy things I know if that make sense. I have sold a fair bit on there - have way too many clothes.

Same - I often buy stuff I already have one of, so I know what expect, e.g. favourite Gap jeans that they don't always have in stock online anyway.

But if not then I just filter to BNWT or new without tags and generally scroll past the crumpled stuff, but I'm going to launder anything I receive anyway so that doesn't bother me too much. I do find it's algorithm gets to know you pretty quickly, so the stuff that comes up in "Recommended for you" now is genuinely stuff I'm interested in.

I’ve switched to a denim chore coat https://www.ralphlauren.co.uk/en/cropped-denim-car-coat-658731.html which feels more current.

Wide leg or straight leg trousers/jeans

Socks with trainers - feels weird having my ankles out now!

adidas trainers which I have always worn - but I’m loving all the bright colours around.

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/04/2025 23:28

I have this denim chore coat from Community Clothing (but I got mine on Vinted for £50):

But I tend to wear an unbuttoned denim shirt (or just fastened with one button to give me a waist) instead though as they’re an old favourite and I have a fairly extensive collection 😉 My current favourite is from Blackhorse Lane Ateliers.

When I first went on Vinted I hated it because it was such a mish mash and I couldn’t see any order. Once you’ve set up your searches or have actually searched for a few different items the algorithm starts showing you a tighter selection based on your preferences. There are definitely shit sellers out there (and I wonder how they ever sell anything ) but I have also had sone great bargains. You essentially need a seller like me who irons, takes very clear photos, gives measurements and doesn’t try and rip anyone off.

On a different note double denim can be very cool. I personally prefer the darker denim but each to their own.

It’s also because I still find real life second hand clothes shopping a far more enjoyable experience. Apart from everything else, you have to leave the house and walk and talk to people. For me, it’s like the difference between going to a live sporting event and watching the same event on TV - the result is always the same but not the quality of the experience.

Admittedly I’ve got more time now but even when I was working and had care responsibilities I felt the same.

UpMyself · 17/04/2025 10:52

@Floisme , I find browsing in charity shops quite calming, and the staff are friendly. I often see the same faces, and we sometimes suggest purchases etc.
I like the pot luck element, and find things I've never heard of before sometimes.

Divebar2021 · 17/04/2025 12:13

Yeah I do agree. It’s having the time for me… I’m still a commuter and I’ve changed size so I need clothes. I did have success in a very wealthy area recently and I want to go back without my husband so I can look properly.

YouOKHun · 17/04/2025 12:29

I’ve just bought this long denim dress from Zara which irritatingly I see is now discounted. I wear it with coloured Adidas trainers or smarter shoes or boots. It can be worn open as a long jacket. If we get some seriously warm weather I’ll have to think again but I’m really pleased with it.

I’ve no idea if it’s fashionable and neither do I care!

What looks current now?
UpMyself · 17/04/2025 13:07

@YouOKHun , That's a good buy as you can wear it most of the year. I have one from Tu, which I can wear with a t-shirt underneath if it's cold.

owlexpress · 17/04/2025 13:17

@YouOKHun I’ve no idea if it’s fashionable and neither do I care!

Given the fact you shop in Zara and wear coloured Adidas (one of the main current trends) I find that hard to believe tbh. There's nothing wrong with caring about fashion, but don't pretend not to.

YouOKHun · 17/04/2025 14:56

@owlexpressYou’re right, there is absolutely nothing wrong with caring about fashion. There is also nothing wrong with liking whatever one happens to like regardless of trends. There is however something slightly odd about deciding a complete stranger is lying about their interest in fashion and deciding they must be ticked off for “pretending” and told to stop it immediately.

For what it’s worth, I happen to have found something I like in Zara which is quite unusual for me, and I wear it with the Adidas Campus trainers I’ve worn for years and will continue to wear once they are consigned to some meme about being out of fashion. This happy fashion accident I appear to have wondered into does not tell you very much about me so you will have to take my word for it that I am not particularly interested in being or being seen to be on trend.

UpMyself · 17/04/2025 17:14

I don't care about fashion but I shop in Zara. I thought it was a fairly cheap shop that if you had a rummage in you might find something you liked.

YouOKHun · 17/04/2025 17:49

@UpMyselfagree with the versatility of a denim dress and yes, that’s what I’ve found with Zara, lots of things that are not for me but some gems I really like and have served me well. I’ve found things I like by going to a physical shop as I’ve found the website model poses make it difficult to see what the garment is like (though I think that’s improved lately).

Floisme · 17/04/2025 17:54

A bit more than just a fairly cheap shop, I’m pretty sure I’ve read that Zara were an early promoter of fast, throwaway fashion, e.g. one of the first retailers (possibly the first in the UK ) to instigate the practice of introducing new lines every few weeks and then withdrawing them.

UpMyself · 17/04/2025 18:04

I've not been in Zara for years, but that's mainly because I've not been near one, but I have one or two things from there. Same with many other shops. The things I have look a bit like Toast, or are regular high-street stuff.

The Tu denim shirtdress I have ticks all the right boxes, and doesn't look like something picked up along with the groceries.
I find the snobbery on here a bit strange. I don't care where something is from, if I like it a lot and it works for me, then great. It doesn't matter if it's Tu or Toast.

The colourful adidas shoes look great, but I don't think they're 'me' (not enough arch support).

UpMyself · 17/04/2025 18:11

@Floisme , I'm probably picking them up 2nd hand. Smile
