I'm not really one for yearly trends - most of my stuff is ancient/well-loved and fairly timeless - but I've just got my big bag of summer stuff out and it's weird how some of it is starting to look a bit off, somehow.

My denim jacket needs retiring for a while, I think - I put it on and it looked weirdly early 2000s, which has never bothered me before! I think a much wider silhouette for trousers is common now, but you'll have to pry my tapered linen cigarette pants from my cold dead hands. I also love simple mid-thigh shorts with pockets, and I still like how those look, but I'm a bit lost skirts and dresses-wise - don't really know what I want to wear this year in that regard. I could also do with a new casual jacket - maybe a sort of cropped chore jacket style with two front pockets. I'll have a look on Vinted.

What are you buying for spring/summer and what are you still wearing after 10/15 years?

Yes to the waistcoat on its own. Dd has bought a cream/buttermilk one with matching trousers. The trousers are wide legged but fitted on the waist.
Also either barrel legged jeans or flares. Lots of younger women wearing stone washed flares with trainers and either a light coloured waistcoat or cropped top. Light colours, white, cream, beige.
Hardly any make up and hair in a neat pony tail or worn down.
I’ve seen lots of matching trousers and tops in the exact same colour/pattern. Loose fitting trousers with wide legs and a phase of tops tying down the front which can leave a gap. I wouldn’t wear that myself as I don’t want my chest or bra on display.

My take, for what it's worth, and happy to be corrected:
Barrel leg jeans & trousers
Coloured and flat trainers like Puma Speedcat
Lace skirts
Chocolate brown
Bubble hem skirts and dresses
Waistcoats worn with nothing underneath
Butter yellow
Knee-length wide shorts with long chunky boots (difficult to describe as it sounds ridiculous)
Blazers that are cinched in at the waist
Short-sleeved jumpers (preferably cashmere)
Mesh ballet flats
Suede bags

Any more??

Yes I think this is a great list especially the brown stuff, bubble hem skirt and short sleeve jumpers.

Also:

  • cardigans worn buttoned at the neck and left otherwise opened
  • Arizona big buckle Birkenstocks

There's lots of green, brown, rust, khaki, orange, yellow, yellowy creams in the shops. The clothes are nice and there are some cracking separates.

There are no rich pickings for summers like me this year. I scoured Peter Jones and the Kings Road yesterday for a formal occasion frock and compromised on a cream and green number from Whistles. My budget didn't have a limit but the colours were so meh (for me) that I wasn't prepared to go too spendy.

Daffodilsarefading · 13/04/2025 08:16

I’ve recently bought a chocolate brown jumper and a green dress. I do have a thing for green.

GeorgeMichaelsMicStand · 13/04/2025 08:30

I have binned all my denim jackets as they’re too denim jacket/summer dress/plimsolls
also binned tapered chino style trews
Im into a bomber jacket instead and barrel legged jeans. I’m also off patterns, preferring a more limited range of colour. Dresses - I feel a longer tighter dress suits me better than those puff sleeved things. In short - I’m dressing for my shape more. And.bloom on instagram is my clothes dream

LaRevolution · 13/04/2025 09:18

Lots of stuff for me to consider/look into here, thanks everyone!!

@GeorgeMichaelsMicStand I LOVE a bomber jacket or quilted cotton type jacket - had a beautiful padded one (very warm) from La Redoute this winter and it got loads of wear on cold dry days. I have a much lighter, quilted one from a French market stall that's good for summer - makes me look a bit expat of a certain age but I'm FINE with that 😁

The athleisure/gym socks/UGG mules etc is not for me (apologies, can't remember who mentioned that) - my suspicion is that it looks current because 20yr olds are wearing it, IYSWIM! Although maybe that's he whole point.

I'm really pleased because I've had a favourite cotton sundress for many years that I've loved, even though it's not been that flattering as it was a bit too big. Just found the next size down on Vinted for £4.50 so I'm very smug. I've also favourited some boxy/triangle-ish linen vests, and a couple more oversized striped linen shirts for summer. I also like a boxy cropped-ish pyjama-style linen/cotton shirt for summer - Oysho do some nice prints. And I've been ruthless about stuff that I've taken out of my summer boxes that I haven't worn for years and know I won't be wearing again - God knows why I've hung on to it but it's now in the charity shop pile.

I know what you mean @NoWayRose. I like wide-legged trousers with a sort of triangle-ish shape top - sort of boxy/a tiny bit cropped, but with some volume. Will try to find a picture of what I mean!

I'm struggling with skirts - not feeling the love for denim skirts at the mo, and linen creases so easily. I used it have a beautiful white cord skirt that worked really well for summer - God knows what happened to it - and am pining after it now. I quite like a voluminous Kemi Telford style, but other than that I'm feeling under-inspired.

I find skirts difficult in the summer. In the winter I'm very much a black tights and boots kind of person. I like maxi skirts because I'm tall and I don't have to think about my legs 😆. Otherwise midi skirts with sandals can look a bit dowdy on me.

Divebar2021 · 13/04/2025 09:49

Youve got to really pick through the “trends” and decide which ones you want to engage with and which ones you don’t. Some of them like the mesh ballet flats feel too fleeting to me ( plus I’m not mad keen on any ballet flats ). Coloured trainers feel more like a longer term trend which is maybe in response to the white trainers being around for a long time. I’m not going anywhere near Sambas etc because I got stung with the Vejas when they appeared.
Barrel leg jeans I have but I won’t buy anymore in that cut… wide / straight / pleated trousers are good and are likely to have greater longevity I think. Denim jackets are ok for me but I have a vintage Wrangler trucker type and a 90’s one I’ve had which is not a traditional cut. Yellow isn’t for me but burgundy was in the winter and I would clash with pink or a brighter red if I came across the right thing.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned animal print - there’s a lot of leopard print still knocking around and I don’t know if Ganni was the originator of that trend but I cannot do the huge sleeves with it. I found a really nice leopard print dress in a charity shop by a brand I don’t know called Baum un Pfergarten who are apparently Danish. Yay to me because it’s lovely. (Not with white trainers though 😏)

MorningSunlight · 13/04/2025 09:50

I’ve got a denim shacket that goes with loads - the shape just feels more modern than a traditional one.

I’m loving a bit of gingham atm but drew the line at some trousers as I thought they’d make me look like a chef!

WineOfYourFiveADay · 13/04/2025 09:51

Yes @Bailiwitch , Collagerie is brilliant, with such lovely curations. Newin.Style is gorgeous too and really good for a lower price-point for high-street lovers

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/04/2025 10:03

I'm struggling with skirts and dresses, I can't get past midi length being what my nan wore and I'm a bit too dumpy these days for full length although tempted by the ones with the split in.

I could actually quite go for a lace or bubble hem skirt.

Cantonet · 13/04/2025 10:44

Popular this year:

Crochet
Fringing in suede/suedette
Shorter tan/khaki/neutral jackets - often bomber style
Antique green colour
Longer midi skirts rather than dresses
Tie closures on everything
Differently shaped denim jackets/jackets

Wearing from previous years:

Wide leg linen pants
White scoop neck vest tops in linen/cotton.
Cotton Gauze shirts/blouses.

Springee · 13/04/2025 10:49

The 'conservative' trend is set to continue this Spring/Summer. Boxy jackets and knitwear Chanel style. When I say jacket, I mean smart jacket that's not a blazer (ie has no collar). Blazers that are baggy are also in.

If you were around 1980-83 and still have the clothes, they are back in. Even the flat shoes - they are not quite ballet pumps, bit more substantial.

Re denim jackets - not the 90s baggy style, but classic or denim bombers and denim variant bombers (chambray, tencel)

Quilted is still having a bit of a moment but in plain tones like cream, black. So not so great to wear.

Jeans shapes hard to call - we are in the anything goes phase where trends are transitional.

Summer jumpers - mid 70s style short sleeved jumpers. Very hard to wear as convincing on trend unless a twenty something.

String of pearls/faux pearls, fob watch necklaces still popular

Trainers - yay not white for those of us who are not keen on that. Sadly the ham pie soles are in. How do people walk properly, let alone run in built out soles?

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/04/2025 11:00

I’m embracing the boho vibe, love it - lace, linen, etc (Free People is my go to). Double denim is defo in - just not for me, lol. Yellow is in, as is brown. I’m giving both a go and enjoying that as they are not colours I routinely go for. I love a wide legged trouser and have some jeans which I love (some cracking ones in Urban Outfitters).

Funnily enough I saw someone on Insta in a lovely quilted denim shacket/bomber with gingham trousers (actually more of a big check check than gingham, almost a madras check, which I love). It looked really modern.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/04/2025 11:31

Oh god gingham, forgot about that! Not my thing, too much like school dresses, lol.

I got the Uniqlo / Comptoir de Cotonniers gingham dress and it’s giving me primary school summer uniform vibes Grinhttps://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E477218-000/00?colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=003

DD says Birkenstock Bostons are the shoes to be seen in this year, although that possibly only applies if you are early 20s. I’ve seen fisherman sandals tipped elsewhere.

I’ve also seen the youngsters move a bit more towards neutral Adidas (but not white) as they go with a wide range of things than the strongly coloured ones.

Animal print I thought was on its way out last year, but seems to be in even more strongly this year, I’ve avoided it, it feels a bit too obvious. Same for those quilted jackets with the wavy stitching, don’t know if there’s a name for them, they’re everywhere but again I don’t know whether that will be a short lived trend and they will start to look out of date quite quickly, I’ve gone for a plain bomber jacket. Trousers still seem to be getting wider, I’ve seen more Palazzo pants this year than last. I love the white trousers thing, they were in in the early 2000s and I’ve missed them!

Bubble hems remind me of the puffball skirts, can’t remember when they were in, but this version is much longer.

I’ve seen a few long A-line utility type skirts as well, moving away from the fuller versions.

HundredMilesAnHour · 13/04/2025 11:42

@KnutsfordCityLimits i just have to say how much I love your username! And now I’m singing it in my head. 🤦‍♀️

I’m keeping gingham for PJs as it’s far too school uniform for me.

I’ve got a lovely bubble skirt (from Privatsachen so quite boho) so might wear that this afternoon. I actually hate boho so this is my one accidental & very reluctant nod to it.

KnutsfordCityLimits · 13/04/2025 12:09

Thanks @HundredMilesAnHour- I sing it as I’m driving up the M6 😂

@KnutsfordCityLimits you realise I’m now going to sing it on the M6 too (I live in London but come from Lancs so have spent a lot of ‘quality time’ 😬 on the M6) and do like a quick stop at Knutsford Booths on my way home to London. 😂

LaRevolution · 13/04/2025 16:14

It is one of the genuinely great usernames, @KnutsfordCityLimits 🤣

I hear you on linen trousers - I was WEDDED to a white linen trouser in the early 2000s!

I also had some much-loved cream bootcut jeans/chinos, in a sort of slightly stretchy denim. Would love to find an equivalent to those. They were from Etam in France, and tbey'd take the hems up for you on-site in a few minutes! Excellent service.

I have bought a yellow jumper and a skirt recently. But it’s luckily a colour that suits me. I am just glad it’s in and thus available!

WinningBoat · 13/04/2025 16:46

I love some of the pyjama-style trousers I see around. Unfortunately, on me, they just look like pyjamas!
