I'm not really one for yearly trends - most of my stuff is ancient/well-loved and fairly timeless - but I've just got my big bag of summer stuff out and it's weird how some of it is starting to look a bit off, somehow.

My denim jacket needs retiring for a while, I think - I put it on and it looked weirdly early 2000s, which has never bothered me before! I think a much wider silhouette for trousers is common now, but you'll have to pry my tapered linen cigarette pants from my cold dead hands. I also love simple mid-thigh shorts with pockets, and I still like how those look, but I'm a bit lost skirts and dresses-wise - don't really know what I want to wear this year in that regard. I could also do with a new casual jacket - maybe a sort of cropped chore jacket style with two front pockets. I'll have a look on Vinted.

What are you buying for spring/summer and what are you still wearing after 10/15 years?

I’ve just got my denim jacket out the loft ready for summer , then saw a meme saying something along the lines of ‘ don’t worry the denim jacket and white trainer mums are here ‘ and then a load of photos of middle aged women wearing long dresses white trainers and a denim jacket. I’ve out it to the back of the wardrobe 😢 that was my summer uniform !

What is middle aged in your view -just curious

polkaloca · 13/04/2025 16:52

This is an excellent source for information on what’s current. Interesting curation from supermarket to couture prices.

I find that pretty lazy, it's just aff links & tend to be lots from similar shops but they chuck a few cheap ones in to be relatable.

WinningBoat · 13/04/2025 16:55

Are bubble hem skirts the same as puffballs? I keep seeing them in the shops and getting flashbacks to my badly-dressed 80s!

happytobemrsg · 13/04/2025 17:02

Thankfully comfy clothes are pretty in at the moment. So I wear a lot of high waisted drawstring wide leg trousers with Uniqlo mini T-shirts (crew & polo). I then chuck a chunky, slightly cropped cardigan or shaket on top. Wish I could wear gazelles or sambas but - again on my comfy theme - I just can’t do it. So I wear trainers from On Cloud instead. Any jumpers I wear are boxy & slightly cropped.

polkaloca · 13/04/2025 17:02

I am liking the silhouette of slightly narrower trousers (not tight in any way) with a long top. Boho is definitely started to look new again to me!

I've ordered the above as I like a coord & so hard to get long shorts (I'm tall). I love that polka dots are back so I really want a dress but not found it yet.

I love this but a bit more than I wanted to spend. i want some sandals with gold trim detail but the Zara ones sold out whilst I debated.

I would love to be tall! So many skirts are too long on me!

polkaloca · 13/04/2025 17:14

@WinningBoat I spent so much of much teenager years & early 20s having to hide my legs because the skirts & dresses back then didn't cover my bum. Hemlines are longer now but my legs are less model like 😭

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 13/04/2025 17:29

Can we talk more about double denim...

I'm currently packing for a week abroad and need to plan my airport outfit as not everything will fit in my case! If I can wear my jeans and denim jacket to travel in, that would solve the issue but will people think what the hell and think they've gone back to the 90s (and not in a good way!)

polkaloca · 13/04/2025 17:34

Tricky one - both shades of blue?

That’s definitely the combination look

Denim jackets are absolutely everywhere, just wear them with wide trousers, or whatever else takes your fancy that isn’t a floral dress (not that there’s anything wrong with a floral dress, but if you want to be current that combo is tired)

I do double denim, but dark with light or black denim with light.

@Divebar2021 , that was a real find. I'm envious. Baum und Pferdgarten - Official Online Shop - United Kingdom

polkaloca · 13/04/2025 17:43

the denim jackets that are in are more oversized, I like the track jacket trend but its my style any wear. I really want a nice shell/rain jacket but not seen any I like yet.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 13/04/2025 17:54

I’ve had denim jackets since a teen ( not the same one!) I’m 60 now and have just got mine out to wash and wear.
Haven’t worn it for the last couple of years
i will be wearing skinny jeans until my final days as they suit my small frame.
i can’t stand excess flappy material

I get this totally, I'm cautious of looking like an extra member of Bewitched 😂

I'm particularly into the PJ type trousers I've bought some really nice ones, I've just had a hysterectomy and jeans aren't comfy yet. I can dress them up or down depending if I'm leaving the house. Still wanting to look reasonably put together.

LetsWatchTheFlowersGrow · 12/04/2025 11:15

I saw that white trainer and denim jacket mum meme. I like that look, and I’m happy to be a middle aged mum. It shouldn’t be an insult (which obviously, it’s intended to be).

What it is, is a way of ridiculing and punishing women for daring to be middle aged.

If women dress like the 20 somethings, they're mutton dressed as lamb, if they dress in a way deemed older, they're frumpy - we cant win! Misogyny is alive and well so wear what makes you feel happy.

MightAsWellBeGretel · 13/04/2025 18:32

White jeans are everywhere 😍 I like the wide legged and flares.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 13/04/2025 18:37

I wish knee length dresses would come back - I don’t suit maxi or midi and that’s all that seems to be out there.

I tried my blue denim shirt with faded black flared jeans earlier and I did not hate it!

I think I'd definitely be a member of Bewitched in my double denim as they're the same colour - both light blue. God, could that be more 80s? Not even cool enough for the 90s! 😂

anon2022anon · 13/04/2025 21:39

Stuff that's definitely in this season that I haven't seen mentioned:
Tomato red 🍅
Dropped waist, and if possible exaggerated hips to go with it
I've seen a few social media people who follow runways more seriously going for sheer- mesh at the bottom of dresses and trousers, and some sheer shorts
Tops, jumpers, blouses with a feature back- open, or a scarf, or a tie
Polka dots are everywhere this season- I'm taking advantage and stocking up, as I have done with leopard print!
Mary Janes and ballet pumps
Maxi, or mid calf, rather than midi- very glad on this one, it's a lot better length on me.
Quite intricate shapes and embellishments
2000 Chloe vibes- soft loose clothes, chiffon, wispy, flouncy but not too over the top.
Very voluminous bottoms

I don't wear a lot of this, as it doesn't suit me, but I've been quite surprised to see little to no 'trend' pieces suggested on here. There was a thread recently where someone wanted 'cool aunt' vibes, and 90% of the suggestions were midi dresses. Yes they're pretty and inoffensive, and if someone asks for a 'nice dress' great, but they absolutely don't scream cool aunt who works in fashion.

I don't need a new denim jacket (ask me again in 6 weeks) but if I did I'd be going for this shape. I saw it in the branch in a soft green and was tempted.
