Goodbye Birkenstock my go to shoes have now gone.....

A bit of a rant really.

I have worn Birkenstocks for well over 30 years, had almost every colour and style, worn them everywhere, walked for miles, never had any issues with sizing, quality or comfort.

Until now, and I have had enough...

Bought a fancy 'limited edition' pair in Singapore in the Birkenstock shop, Giza style, bright metallic silver with a big buckle in a iridescent blue/purple colour, black footbed, loved them so different. This was just under 6 months ago cost of £186, now the silver is rubbing off the leather, esp. round the buckles where also the leather underneath is all scratched due to the buckle, the toe post leather is wrinkling up badly, the top of the sole is worn at the front, in a odd place to wear out, the soles soles feel more like 'plastic' when walking rather than the rubber of all my other ones. I mostly wear these on a night time as they are a tad, erm, bright.

Another pair of Giza, tobacco leather, 1 year old, so badly worn on the soles look worse than others I have had for almost 7 years, and the top leather looks very shabby already. Im starting to slip on pavements and esp places that have tiles due to the lack of any grip on the soles, so really rendering them unwearable.

I have a total of 12 pairs, oldest pair is around 20 years old and still going strong.

I rotate my Birkenstocks but do wear them most days, but the last 2 pairs have been such poor quality, I am not going to buy anymore. Looking at Birkenstock complaints on line I am not alone with the quality issues since been sold to LVMH, who now appear to have cheapened the materials used but the prices have really gone up.

But what will I replace them with?

I dont hold out much hope of my complaint to Birkenstock..

Rant over!

Oh what a dreadful shame! I used to wear Birkenstocks all the time. In fact I have a couple of pairs which are now over 20 years old which still look good. I was tempted to buy some last summer but didn’t. Now I’m glad I didn’t waste my money. I have a couple of pairs of Josef Seibel‘s that still seem to be going strong but maybe that’s just luck.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 04:30

@MaggieBsBoat I have JS boots and they are well made. But I live in a hot country and no boots here I'm afraid! But will look at the JS sandals, thanks.

I was thinking as well, due to humidity some of my BS were getting a layer of some kind of fungus, so they were scrubbed and covered in baking powder in a bag put in the freezer, then cleaned off and Im still wearing them, that was about 10 years ago, I would not even try with the new ones they would fall apart I think.

Also forgot to add the Brown Giza the cork is just starting to crack at the sides as well....

Thank you for the heads up. Equally have been wearing Birkenstocks for years and was afraid when they sold out that the quality would vanish! Hopefully ok for a few years yet with current ones but really sad to see such a fabulous staple disappear.

FortyElephants · 27/03/2025 05:41

Oh no what a shame! I live in my vegan Birkenstocks from spring to autumn. Will have to try something else when my current pair get old.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 05:51

@Mumofoneandone That's exactly what my DH said when the company was sold, and he was right now 4 years (or there abouts) they are just really another 'fashion' brand and not worth the money.

@FortyElephants I have 3 pairs of Birko-Flor (not quite the same as Vegan) but not leather all in great condition about 10-15 years old, just starting to wear on the soles which I was going to get re-soled but will not bother now.

I bought some last year and the same - leather rubbing off by the buckles. Very disappointing.

Rubyupbeat · 27/03/2025 06:00

Oh no, this is so sad. I too, live in my Birkies, oldest over 20 years and 4 I bought last year. I have around 25 pairs and the oldest are still in great shape as I rotate mine too. I think I should be OK for a while, I don't want to think of my next go to!

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 06:26

I'm looking at Mephisto cork footbed sandal's, I have bought full trainer type shoes from them with the ball thingy on the sole and they were great, but only a few places sell them in the UK (to buy when I am back), not paying for customs to get from Germany.

Not sure if you can get Moshulu where you are but they have fab birkie style sandals with extra cushioning. Annoyingly I don’t fit their sizes so I did splurge on Birkenstocks but find them v uncomfy other than as slippers so won’t bother again.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 06:49

@Phunkychicken Thanks for your reply, no I cannot get Moshulu where I live but will have a look.

Strangely they have just opened a Birkenstock shop here, mostly Birko ones but they are double the UK price.

Have you tried FitFlops?

letshavetea · 27/03/2025 07:04

Geox spherica sandals are so comfy (and stylish). I buy a new pair every year. I also like Teva Tirra and Moshulu. I have wide feet.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 27/03/2025 07:13

It might get be worth checking Genuins (Spanish brand) as well, although I can't really vouch for them. I have a 5 year old pair, but I don't wear them enough to know how long they last.

EdithStourton · 27/03/2025 07:26

I was going to get some new Birkies last summer as mine were knackered, but couldn't find my size in a design and colour I liked anywhere. Now I won't bother. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions for alternatives.

PinkCatInATree · 27/03/2025 07:41

Look at Moshulu - i switched last year and loved them (after similar long term love of Birkis).

ExtraDecluttering · 27/03/2025 07:47

I tried one pair of Moshulu a few years ago and they didn't have such good arch support as the Birkies, has that changed?

2chocolateoranges · 27/03/2025 07:50

I love my Birkenstocks, I’ve had no problem with mine, one pair are 4 years old and another just a year but both comfy and still as good as new.

SpectatorInLife · 27/03/2025 07:57

There are so many cheap copies around, I guess it just isn't worth it to pay for the originals if they're expensive but cheaply made.

SuperTrooper14 · 27/03/2025 08:43

My newest pair also fell apart after only two years. I suspect it's a deliberate ploy now they are so popular – Birkenstock won't make any profit if people only buy one pair every 20 years. So make them more likely to damage and break and you'll get more repeat customers.

MrsMitford3 · 27/03/2025 08:46

I didn't realise they had changed owners but I am def going through them faster than I used to-I wear every single day-actually pulled them out yesterday as the sunshine lured me into thinking it was Spring.
I walk A LOT but am going through a pair a year when i used to have them for ages. Now I know why...

littlefireseverywhere · 27/03/2025 08:46

I’ve just bought a pair of Qomfort ones, very comfy and only £35 when the Birkenstock equivalent was £125 at the cheapest price I found. I expect them to last a season and if they do longer, fantastic. I agree with Birkenstocks though, have worn for years and last few years been so disappointing. I’ve switched to the EVA equivalent but will look at some of the recommendations above.

MrsCarson · 27/03/2025 08:50

I'm really sad to hear this. I've always had a pair of Arizonas in use for over 30 years.
I got some vegan ones and hated them, so went and bought pink leather ones two years ago and love them again. I'm now worried it may be the last if they are starting to fall apart on other people.
