Goodbye Birkenstock my go to shoes have now gone.....

A bit of a rant really.

I have worn Birkenstocks for well over 30 years, had almost every colour and style, worn them everywhere, walked for miles, never had any issues with sizing, quality or comfort.

Until now, and I have had enough...

Bought a fancy 'limited edition' pair in Singapore in the Birkenstock shop, Giza style, bright metallic silver with a big buckle in a iridescent blue/purple colour, black footbed, loved them so different. This was just under 6 months ago cost of £186, now the silver is rubbing off the leather, esp. round the buckles where also the leather underneath is all scratched due to the buckle, the toe post leather is wrinkling up badly, the top of the sole is worn at the front, in a odd place to wear out, the soles soles feel more like 'plastic' when walking rather than the rubber of all my other ones. I mostly wear these on a night time as they are a tad, erm, bright.

Another pair of Giza, tobacco leather, 1 year old, so badly worn on the soles look worse than others I have had for almost 7 years, and the top leather looks very shabby already. Im starting to slip on pavements and esp places that have tiles due to the lack of any grip on the soles, so really rendering them unwearable.

I have a total of 12 pairs, oldest pair is around 20 years old and still going strong.

I rotate my Birkenstocks but do wear them most days, but the last 2 pairs have been such poor quality, I am not going to buy anymore. Looking at Birkenstock complaints on line I am not alone with the quality issues since been sold to LVMH, who now appear to have cheapened the materials used but the prices have really gone up.

But what will I replace them with?

I dont hold out much hope of my complaint to Birkenstock..

Rant over!

Also Ancient Greek but they don’t look like they’d survive a whole day sightseeing!

Jins · 16/06/2025 08:26

I bought my last pair of Birkies two years ago and rarely wear them nowadays to try to keep them in reasonable shape for a while. My oldest pair of gizehs are now nearly 30, my first Arizonas are at least 20 and both are in better shape than my newest pair.

I’ve tried most of the alternatives suggested and while they aren’t bad they don’t fit like birkies. The original birkie footbed was perfect for me.

But I have found a true alternative in Dr Brinkmann which are virtually identical in fit and take just as long to wear in as Birkies used to. I’ve got a 3 year old pair of Arizona style and a 2 year old pair of Boston style and both look immaculate still. I’ve managed to get them for very little as they seem to sell certain sizes at very low prices on Amazon occasionally and I’ve been lucky. I just got some Arizona style for £7.20 when other sizes were £39.99.

Do Dr Brinkman come in a wide fitting?

Jins · 16/06/2025 08:42

@SummerDaysOnTheWay i have very wide feet (G) and the standard fit is perfect for me. Same sizing as Birkenstock really but I haven’t looked to see if they do a narrow fit as I don’t need them.

The footbed is almost identical to vintage Birkenstock with a deep heel cup and high arch.

artant · 16/06/2025 11:08

I’m definitely a regular (ie wide) fit in Birkenstocks and the narrowness put me off trying Mephisto for years but I can get away with it in the Helens (and probably Hesters too). I tried the Mephisto equivalent of Birkenstock Bostons though and couldn’t get close to putting my feet in! The Mephisto footbed is very like the Birkenstock one except that the heel is slightly higher than the ball of the foot which means I don’t get back ache in them which I’d started to in Birkenstocks.

My abject failure with the clog style sent me back to Birkenstock Bostons for about the house (sadly the backache problem returns in minutes if I venture outside in them). I’ve now been put right off them though having fallen head first down the stairs while wearing them.

Anyone tried the Hush Puppies or Moshulu?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 18/06/2025 08:13

Quick update for anyone looking to replace Mayaris - I've had both these for a few weeks now and have done fairly long walks (5k - long by my standards 😄) in both and am very pleased, especially with these:

I've also been looking for Birki alternatives since I heard they'd been sold and the quality has gone downhill. I've just ordered a pair of these from another German brand AFS so 🤞🏽
AFS

I also saw some talking about the decline in quality of DMs - this brand name was also sold and are now produced in China. I can highly recommend NPS shoes, based in the UK, who make DMs to the original specs: NP Solovair

Loving all the suggestions - thanks. The Brakeburn ones were terrible quality, I didn't even bother to try them on when they arrived!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 29/06/2025 16:22

I've found the same with Birkenstocks. I've bought a replacement pair of classic Arizona's two summers on the trot because the tread on the soles has worn so badly they've become slippery and dangerous. I don't live in them, I wear them maybe 2/3 of the time in warmer weather, so they should last the season, in my opinion. I love the look and they suit my wide feet but they are nowhere near the quality they were.

Harbourofdiscovery · 01/07/2025 10:50

So I have found a website called Legend shoes, ordered a pair of Mephiso Madiline and a pair of ecco Flowt sandals.

Excellent prices in the sale, would of ordered more but my size was very popular, shall see how these are.

I had a pair of white Ramses Birkenstocks on yesterday sole really getting quite worn now, but must not grumble they are almost 30 years old! My fist ever pair bought in Munich

@Harbourofdiscovery not read whole thread.

i wear Mephisto Helen sandals which are quite similar to Giza and have done for years. Currently got three pairs. Not bought any recently but the historic quality was good.

There are the odd mephisto shops around and Toast/Hobbs both sell them too but also lots of online retailers. If buying online just check sizing. I wear a 41 and ordered online in UK sizing (wish they wouldn’t do this).

Mephisto size chart translates a 41 to a UK 7, but the retailers generic chart for all brands translated a 41 to an 8 so I had no idea which size to order and predictably the wrong size turned up!

Harbourofdiscovery · 01/07/2025 11:28

@BeaTwix Yes I like the look of the Helen (did say up thread) but sadly my size 4,37 all sold out at super prices on the Legend website. I have other full Mephisto shoes and really like them but no sandals, as I have always worn Birkenstocks!

I am becoming obsessed with this now!

Have you tried Oak and Hyde OP? I've got a pair of the leather savannah I bought when I was pregnant with DS1 (who's nearly 6) and they're still going strong, and so comfy!

artant · 01/07/2025 12:54

I’ve ordered a new pair of Mephisto Helen online but I think they may be walking here from the time it’s taking. I wanted a pair of sandals with a back strap as well though so as an experiment I’ve ordered a Mephisto men’s style (Nardo) as they come in a 39. If they’re a bit wider that’ll be a win for me but they only come in black and brown which is functional but dull.

I had thought I’d venture in to town to see what I could find in the Mephisto store on Bond Street but the prospect of the Jubilee line in a heatwave put me off hence my highly experimental online order of the men’s sandals.

I've only read the first and last pages. Long time Madrid wearer here. I bought some Brakeburns last year as needed some emergency sandals on holiday. I didn't wear them much last year, got them out a few days ago and my feet are wrecked (far beyond normal wearing in).

Will peruse thread for recommendations!

MidLifeWoman · 27/08/2025 16:09

I had to update fellow Birkenstock wearers here. I needed a new pair and after a lot of targeted advertising ordered a pair of Arizona knock offs from Qomfortco. They were delivered today and wow, they are mega comfy! The cushioning is much better than the cushioned Birks.
They are „vegan“ (ie plastic…), but if they last only half as long as my Birks that’s fine, they were only £35, much more palatable than the new Birkenstock pricing.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 29/08/2025 22:09

Heavenly feet are great but they’re not wide enough for me.

Harbourofdiscovery · 30/08/2025 12:46

Bit of an update, I ordered Mephisto Hesta, very very soft air bed inner sole, cork sole thick outer sole. Standard width G. Also Ecco

Few blisters rubbed against top and small toe but other wise great, will try the Helen next. (but I do get a couple of blisters with Birkies if not worn for a while)

To early to say how they stand up to my miles of walking in this type of sandal and see how the sole wears.
