Goodbye Birkenstock my go to shoes have now gone.....

A bit of a rant really.

I have worn Birkenstocks for well over 30 years, had almost every colour and style, worn them everywhere, walked for miles, never had any issues with sizing, quality or comfort.

Until now, and I have had enough...

Bought a fancy 'limited edition' pair in Singapore in the Birkenstock shop, Giza style, bright metallic silver with a big buckle in a iridescent blue/purple colour, black footbed, loved them so different. This was just under 6 months ago cost of £186, now the silver is rubbing off the leather, esp. round the buckles where also the leather underneath is all scratched due to the buckle, the toe post leather is wrinkling up badly, the top of the sole is worn at the front, in a odd place to wear out, the soles soles feel more like 'plastic' when walking rather than the rubber of all my other ones. I mostly wear these on a night time as they are a tad, erm, bright.

Another pair of Giza, tobacco leather, 1 year old, so badly worn on the soles look worse than others I have had for almost 7 years, and the top leather looks very shabby already. Im starting to slip on pavements and esp places that have tiles due to the lack of any grip on the soles, so really rendering them unwearable.

I have a total of 12 pairs, oldest pair is around 20 years old and still going strong.

I rotate my Birkenstocks but do wear them most days, but the last 2 pairs have been such poor quality, I am not going to buy anymore. Looking at Birkenstock complaints on line I am not alone with the quality issues since been sold to LVMH, who now appear to have cheapened the materials used but the prices have really gone up.

But what will I replace them with?

I dont hold out much hope of my complaint to Birkenstock..

Rant over!

Vegetarian Shoes usually have birk dupes which are really good quality and also don't need breaking in

Ah shit. I was building up to a new pair of Arizonas. I'd missed the whole Birkenstock buyout/gone crap stuff.

Anyone got a good dupe recommndation for narrow feet? I usually like the leather Arizonas narrow fitting, but even that's a bit big for my twiggy feet.

I’ve never needed to break in Birkies…
Their footbed is the only thing that is comfortable for me in summer due to hypermobility and the fact you can’t wear orthotics in sandals. As I say, I buy yearly and have noticed no change in quality/durability.

Zeitumschaltung · 28/03/2025 12:24

I have been wearing Giza for years and had the same experience with the last pair. I bought a similar pair in Primark and they've lasted much much longer, and are more comfortable.

I have always found Birkenstocks to be incredibly uncomfortable at first to the point of causing damage to my feet until they are broken in. Whereas with the vegetarian shoes dupes I can put them on and wear them instantly with no issues at all.

Must be a foot shape thing I guess. Birkies always feel like I’ve had them years when 8 first put them on!

I have found very few brands of footwear which truly allow toes to spread out in the way that they should. I wear Birkenstocks as much as I possibly can in order to keep the bones and ligaments in my feet properly aligned.

Yes, I injured a toe ligament last year and my Bostons were the only thing I could wear, lovely wide toe box and the rigid sole to stop it flexing too much as I walked.

SpeedwellBlue · 28/03/2025 18:38

That's a shame. I bought my first pair in 2009 for £35 from amazon. My most recent pair in 2020 for £53. I don't know what they cost now

I have Amsterdam clogs (as slippers) and wore them after breaking my toe in lockdown for the same reason!

Total opposite with me. I tried the Vegetarian dupes and thought they were stiff and uncomfortable. I switched straight back to Birkies - never needed to 'break them in' at all. I'm on my 5th pair and they all feel like old friends straight away!

LittleEsme · 29/03/2025 06:49

Wouldn’t ever buy a pair of BS for the reasons already listed but found an exact BS style pair made by a Spanish or Portuguese company a few years ago. The leather is a lot softer but the footbed is a dream. I’ve worn them so much that the brand name has faded away. Would love another pair too but can’t find who they are!!!

I guess it depends on your feet!

Have you looked at barefoot shoes? There's quite a few brands and they have some on AliExpress too for a good price.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 29/03/2025 09:47

Bugger. The new Mayaris arrived and are going straight back. My feet didn't even sit straight in them and I couldn't get my big toe through the loop. Shame.

I originally bought them on the recommendation of my osteopath when I had a business where I was on my feet all day. Fortunately for my feet I'm now back in an office.

I have ordered a couple of alternatives because I really want something to walk in - particularly on holiday - that isn't a closed-in trainer.

My new gizeh’s toepost is rubbing my toes so I can’t walk. This has not ever happened in 20 years of having a new pair every year. They’re also more lightweight and sole feels like plastic.
im gutted tbh

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 29/03/2025 13:00

The Gizahs I bought two years ago (Birko Flor) cracked within weeks on the upper (coloured) part. Very annoying. I can wear them but it doesn't look great.

artant · 29/03/2025 13:12

Mephisto Helen are soft leather (as long as you don’t go for patent). More like a Birkenstock narrow in width but I’ve worn them happily despite them being too narrow for me.

Buying from the Mephisto site isn’t good post Brexit but there are plenty of UK stockists and they have a shop in London (I think it’s still there).

I'm glad I have a backlog of Birkenstocks still in the box then. Bought in winter sales.

Has anyone tried these? I just followed @artant link above and found them, they look very similar

Plakton hopefully worked this time

I can see the footbed has no arch support, so no use to me at all.
But I haven’t noticed a decrease in Birkie quality so 🤷‍♀️

Perhaps Biostep? They're a Spanish company. I bought some of their BIrkenstock-style sandals in TK Maxx last summer.
