Goodbye Birkenstock my go to shoes have now gone.....

A bit of a rant really.

I have worn Birkenstocks for well over 30 years, had almost every colour and style, worn them everywhere, walked for miles, never had any issues with sizing, quality or comfort.

Until now, and I have had enough...

Bought a fancy 'limited edition' pair in Singapore in the Birkenstock shop, Giza style, bright metallic silver with a big buckle in a iridescent blue/purple colour, black footbed, loved them so different. This was just under 6 months ago cost of £186, now the silver is rubbing off the leather, esp. round the buckles where also the leather underneath is all scratched due to the buckle, the toe post leather is wrinkling up badly, the top of the sole is worn at the front, in a odd place to wear out, the soles soles feel more like 'plastic' when walking rather than the rubber of all my other ones. I mostly wear these on a night time as they are a tad, erm, bright.

Another pair of Giza, tobacco leather, 1 year old, so badly worn on the soles look worse than others I have had for almost 7 years, and the top leather looks very shabby already. Im starting to slip on pavements and esp places that have tiles due to the lack of any grip on the soles, so really rendering them unwearable.

I have a total of 12 pairs, oldest pair is around 20 years old and still going strong.

I rotate my Birkenstocks but do wear them most days, but the last 2 pairs have been such poor quality, I am not going to buy anymore. Looking at Birkenstock complaints on line I am not alone with the quality issues since been sold to LVMH, who now appear to have cheapened the materials used but the prices have really gone up.

But what will I replace them with?

I dont hold out much hope of my complaint to Birkenstock..

Rant over!

I'm a big fan of Birkenstocks but the soles have always been rubbish as they wear down very very quickly. When mine were wear down I take them to the shoe repair place and he puts on a more hardwearing sole which lasts for a long time.

I only wear suede Arizonas and have had no issues with new ones bought in the last 12 months

I’m really surprised because first me the black soles really do not last at all

whatyear · 27/03/2025 13:44

I've had the same experience and last year bought a pair of platform Tevas and they're great! Different style but very comfortable and can wear with all sorts of outfits.

ExtraDecluttering · 27/03/2025 13:46

I've never gone through the soles of any of mine, and some of them have had very hard wear. If anything the cork goes. I've got about 10 pairs some of which are pretty old now (I usually buy a pair a year and switch them in and out of use).

I cannot recommend Gumbies enough. We live in their flip flops in the summer and their slippers in the winter. Had a few of my flip flops from them for a few years now, and I wear them pretty much every day from May until late September - still going strong!

I tried one pair of Moshulu a few years ago and they didn't have such good arch support as the Birkies, has that changed?

Agree, last year I bought a pair of their Bavaria Waxy sandals, which are like Birkenstock Arizonas. I was pleased at first with how comfy they were compared to the first few wears of Birkies, and they're half the price!

But the leather soon stretched and they became too soft and sloppy. None of that secure, supported feeling you get with Birkies. Or used to, anyway. Very sad if the quality has nosedived.

artant · 27/03/2025 17:02

Even though my feet are a bit wide for them, I’d really recommend Mephisto Helen sandals. I wore Birkenstocks for about a decade before they started to give me backache which the Mephisto don’t.

I have Birkenstock Bostons now for about the house (backache still if worn out) because Mephisto Halina are just too narrow for me. The shearling ones are looking bald after very little wear.

Like others, I’d also recommend FitFlop. And I’ve had some good sandals from Wolky.

schooloflostsocks · 27/03/2025 17:05

Celtic and co have some nice Birkenstock type sandals. No idea if they are as good as older Birkenstocks but other stuff I've had from them has been fab

I have some Gumbies flip flops too. I had never heard of them and got them for a sunny holiday back in 2014. I only use them on holiday (alternate with Birkies) unless we have some sort of heatwave here in UK. They are so hard wearing I'm shocked they have lasted this long and they are very comfy.

Ophy83 · 27/03/2025 17:50

I bought some moshulus about 9 years ago, still going strong. Also have some birkenstock dupes that I got a few years ago from fatface and are much comfier than my real birkenstocks

quirkychick · 27/03/2025 18:00

That's both interesting and disappointing about birkies. My old ones lasted 15yrs and are still good for scruffy wear. I had a newer pair which are not lasting nearly as well, though I bought a vintage pair from Ebay last year, so fingers crossed. I've bought boots and slippers from Celtic & Co, which have all been very well made, so would assume their sandals would be too. They have good customer service too.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 27/03/2025 18:03

Hmmm. I'm actually waiting on a delivery of Mayaris as we speak. I've been wearing them for years and my last pair finally gave in after a decade.

I will only buy direct from Birkenstock as I bought a gorgeous pair acouple of years ago from a different supplier and I realise now that they didn't give an option of regular (which I need) or narrow and judging by the discomfort and rubbing I'm guessing they were narrow fit by default. And the price has more than doubled.

Hoping I do better this time or it's my adult niece's lucky day again and farewell to Birkenstocks for me too.

Fingers/toes crossed..

StartEngine · 27/03/2025 18:11

This is sad, I didn’t know this. I bought a pair of madrid’s in the same size I normally do this year, just because I fancied a different colour, and they’re narrower than they usually are. I did buy the right width, it’s just narrower than all the other madrids I’ve had.

6namechange3 · 27/03/2025 18:15

I have a pair that are 25 years old. I wear them a lot in the summer, have had the them resoled three times and they still look great. Maybe try and hunt down some vintage ones?

Those look really smart. I wear havianas flip flops a lot in the summer but I've been feeling for a while that I should really get some with better foot support.

unsync · 27/03/2025 18:44

It is sad as like you @Harbourofdiscovery I've been wearing them for decades. The trainers are good, but I only wear mine at thr gym, so not not much wear and tear. I bought a pair of the uppsala shearling boots in the sales. I had to return them as there was a manufacturing fault which should not have made it through QC.

On the upside, I have that many pairs, it's going to be a while before I need any more.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 27/03/2025 19:14

Oh god OP why is everything so fucking crap?! I just did a bunch of pre-holiday shopping and i have to send EVERYTHING back!
Swimwear from Boden - too short, not enough material to cover boobs
swimwear from John Lewis - same
I’m buying my usual size and these do not look like skimpy suits online
dress from new look - totally shapelesss
shirt/blouse from seasalt - shitty material and pattern printed not embroidered 🙄🙄🙄
SO.FUCKING.ANOYING!!!!

Gumptionesque · 27/03/2025 19:18

I have 3 pairs of Mayari’s, but the most recent definitely not in the same league as the previous 2 in terms of wear and tear. What a shame.

I’ve seen a pair of Fitflops that I like the look of, so may switch to them after falling for their trainers.

2chocolateoranges · 27/03/2025 07:50

I love my Birkenstocks, I’ve had no problem with mine, one pair are 4 years old and another just a year but both comfy and still as good as new.

Same. Ones I bought last year aren’t wearing any differently from much older ones.

cardibach · 27/03/2025 20:47

CharlotteStreetW1 · 27/03/2025 18:32

I have these from Clarks which are very comfortable in an "Arizona" kind of way...

https://www.clarksoutlet.co.uk/brookleigh-sun/26165051-p

Clarks don’t make shoes big enough for me. And nobody has arch support like Birkies. Luckily I’m not seeing this apparent crash in quality in my newer pairs. I have a pair of Arizonas, some Mayari and some clogs all bought in the last year. No issues.

Carouselfish · 27/03/2025 20:58

I like Remonte, but they do only last a year.

TrainGame · 27/03/2025 21:06

Would anyone know if the cork footbed is available in this kind of sandal but a much lower flatter sole? I don’t like the chunk of the Birkenstock, partly as I have an old broken bone, now healed but lumpy on my foot and it rubs against the high edges of the footbed making them too painful to wear. But a low flat cork sole would be wonderful. Thank you should someone have any thoughts!!

Wexone · 27/03/2025 21:13

oh I never knew they were sold? please don't say quality is gone. I live in them summer. have a few pairs ranging from patent to suede ones. my go too are a gold pair I have had since covid and have worn to death. they have been in the sea walked miles in and I had a quick look the other day and still OK to wear might be my house sandles now. I just bought a pair of studded ones and my husband commented when the parcel arrived summer must be in way your birckenstocks have arrived 🤣 they are fab 👌
if you looking for a nother type of sandal I would alos recommend wodden - they are very comfortable
