Goodbye Birkenstock my go to shoes have now gone.....

A bit of a rant really.

I have worn Birkenstocks for well over 30 years, had almost every colour and style, worn them everywhere, walked for miles, never had any issues with sizing, quality or comfort.

Until now, and I have had enough...

Bought a fancy 'limited edition' pair in Singapore in the Birkenstock shop, Giza style, bright metallic silver with a big buckle in a iridescent blue/purple colour, black footbed, loved them so different. This was just under 6 months ago cost of £186, now the silver is rubbing off the leather, esp. round the buckles where also the leather underneath is all scratched due to the buckle, the toe post leather is wrinkling up badly, the top of the sole is worn at the front, in a odd place to wear out, the soles soles feel more like 'plastic' when walking rather than the rubber of all my other ones. I mostly wear these on a night time as they are a tad, erm, bright.

Another pair of Giza, tobacco leather, 1 year old, so badly worn on the soles look worse than others I have had for almost 7 years, and the top leather looks very shabby already. Im starting to slip on pavements and esp places that have tiles due to the lack of any grip on the soles, so really rendering them unwearable.

I have a total of 12 pairs, oldest pair is around 20 years old and still going strong.

I rotate my Birkenstocks but do wear them most days, but the last 2 pairs have been such poor quality, I am not going to buy anymore. Looking at Birkenstock complaints on line I am not alone with the quality issues since been sold to LVMH, who now appear to have cheapened the materials used but the prices have really gone up.

But what will I replace them with?

I dont hold out much hope of my complaint to Birkenstock..

Rant over!

I can see the footbed has no arch support, so no use to me at all.
But I haven’t noticed a decrease in Birkie quality so 🤷‍♀️

That’s a good spot about arch support, I’ll keep looking

Harbourofdiscovery · 30/03/2025 05:19

I now have a very long list to go through to find an alternative!

Had a quick look at TKmaxx, they had quite a selection some of which have been mentioned on the thread at some great prices. I will order some to pick up for when I'm back.

I really is such a shame that so many of us are finding the same with our once beloved Birkies......... I have now noticed as well with my newest pair, the metal part on the toe post has now all discoloured, more on one than the other.

Very disappointing, looks like I'll have to make my two pairs, both now about 15 years old, last forever....only problem is they get a bit whiffy these days. Any tips, other than washing my feet once in a while. 🤣

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 30/03/2025 12:29

I had a look at my two pairs today. The uppers on the newer pair is different to the older pair. It's much stiffer and doesn't flex, that's why it cracked on both sandals. The older pair is more soft and flexible. Very annoying. I love the footbed on birkenstocks and how there is space for toes. One of my feet needs the extra room with an awkward small toe.

Agapornis · 30/03/2025 12:35

I really like El Naturalista. Good foot support, last for years, all leather footbed and uppers, will survive a good clean. I've had two pairs of sandals. One lasted for 15 years, another is about 10 years old now. Don't wear them year round, though!

Shame Teva don't work for you, I've had one pair for about 25 years now 😅

Alternatively, try Vinted and eBay, I recently bought some older model BS for £15 - barely worn.

Bas501 · 30/03/2025 12:53

Most things now are poorer quality than years ago. Nothing lasts.

Harbourofdiscovery · 31/03/2025 07:50

Crocs are a definite no no from me Im afraid, and even with leather clogs, they are too closed in and would be a sweaty mess. I have both Lotta of Stockholm and Swedish Hasbeens clog type shoes and I could not wear them here.

The other styles on the Hotter site are not what I would wear either, but appreciate your input thanks.

I ruined a pair of Madrids years ago because I wore them straight after applying foot cream and they absolutely stunk so I guess the cream sinks into the cork etc and causes the smell

I've never had a stinky pair since due to never wearing them if I’ve got foot cream on

I've had plantar fasciitis so Crocs were my go to, in fact the only shoes I could wear.
I'd say after birkenstocks, they have got to be the next choice, surely? They don't all look like clogs and now they're making them out of leather.www.crocs.co.uk/c/collections/sandals-collection

I also like hotter shoes https://www.hotter.com/womens/womens-sandals?_gl=11wrvro9_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQjw16O_BhDNARIsAC3i2GBbygqpyxkCa5Ge84gIEpxSRkDR8qQEV_W2wjhXidFpXI1XhQYfHBQaAkNfEALw_wcB&page=1&fetch=1
and fit flops https://www.fitflop.com/uk/en/shop/womens-flip-flops-uk

I think Crocs caused my plantar fasciitis, I can only wear them for very short periods now before they start the twinges off again.

The usual advice is to apply a paste made with bicarbonate of soda and water. Then the advice varies - I put them in a plastic bag in the freezer for a few days, which I think did make a difference. Other people don't do the freezer thing. More on this thread .

Cleaning smelly Birkenstocks | Mumsnet

How? Ive tried bicarbonate but it didn’t do much. I’ve had a pair for 2 weeks and they stink already. How do l clean them? Well, not clean but un-sti...

Yes, my last pair are worn out after a year. The sole wore thin and the cork cracked. Other pairs I'd had for years and wore to death - I'd say at least 7 years. The quality has gone and I'm not paying £80 when they'll be broken within a year.

Did you find a good alternative OP?

gianfrancogorgonzola · 14/06/2025 17:46

I bought my first and only pair in 2019 and although had no quality issues - and will hang onto them as garden / bin shoes - decided never to do so again, EVERYONE wears them now.

I’ve gone for Air and grace this year.

Completely agree regarding the quality not matching the price. The quality now is woeful

Harbourofdiscovery · 15/06/2025 08:26

@NotMeekNotObedient , I have looked high and low for an alternative and cannot as yet find any replacement.

I have been through every type TKmaxx have both online and in store as they do have many brands who are 'lookie like' Birkenstocks, all quite poor quality.
Celtic & Co, ordered the 2 strap Arizona type, to soft and floppy no support, other brands just not the right fit.

Ordered some Fit Flop toe posts, but the position of the toe post to me is to far back from the front of the shoe if that makes sense! But kept a pair of strapped ones which are ok, but having walked a lot in the house with them, I feel a bit wobbly with the bit of the wedge on them.

Currently wearing plastic flip flops....

What am I to do!!!!!

Old ones off eBay are probably the best way to get the real thing - from before the quality went downhill. Do a search for your size and set email alerts so you can pounce on any new listings. It’s a bit hit and miss of course but you can tell a lot from the description - “moving house and having a big clearout, bought these years ago but hardly wore them” = you’ve struck gold!

ZiggyZowie · 15/06/2025 10:29

Have you tried Marks and Spencer?

I saw some copies of Birkis in there the other day.

Also, I got some Birkis lookalikes from Temu, very comfy

Tripthelightfantastical · 15/06/2025 10:43

I’m glad
I read this as contemplating buying a new pair . What a shame .

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/06/2025 10:48

I love DM sandals and similar has happened there I’m sad to say. Cheaper materials by the look of it, but the price has gone up. 😤

Harbourofdiscovery · 15/06/2025 16:00

Not long in after looking at shoes...again!

M&S, looked at the lookie likes, Arizona style in Gold, did not think they would really last that long and the leather was quite thin, but for the price if they are just for a couple of weeks wear a year fine, but not for everyday.

Went into Schuh had a look at the DM ones, oh my the sole I dont think is suited to sandals, they looked like huge clumps on my feet and not the most comfy to even try on. They had the new Giza suede rivet in yellow, the suede was really 'floppy' and had very little support. But loved the colour but no, no Birkies even if they were reduced!

Looked at a few pairs of Gabor, given they were hitting £100, though again the quality was poor for the price.

Clarks, erm, no.

Sorry, not a fan of buying used shoes esp sandals so thats another no from me!

I will continue with my quest until I leave the UK, by then boots will be in stock at this rate!

Thanks again for everyones input!

I really like the Mephisto Hester and Helen, but having to get them from Germany and maybe having to pay import, well thats not going to happen. And I am not visiting Germany anytime soon (but have bought others from there in the past) Have found them on some UK sites but not my size....

NotMeekNotObedient · 15/06/2025 21:08

Sorry to hear you haven't found a good alternative. I'm taking a punt on some Brakeburn look-a-likes, they have a sale on via Freemans right now and it's free returns. I have a pair of their other sandals (leather) and they are comfortable, I think I'll get 2-3 summers out of them. The dupes aren't leather which puts me off but they are less than £30 right now for 'Madrid' style ones. Limited colour choices vs Biko but look quite nice.

Otherwise I'll check out M&S and Tkmaxx which conveniently are in the same local retail park. I'll keep an eye on Vinted but for me they'd have to be pretty much brand new too; I feel like Birkos really mold to your feet so wouldn't want ones someone else had worn really.

Thanks for all the reccomendation!

I’ve had several pairs of Mephisto Helen sandals since Birkenstocks started to give me a backache. They’re really too narrow for me (more like the narrow fit Birkenstocks) but I’ve happily worn them anyway. (Think I actually prefer the design to anything Birkenstocks offer.)

If you’re in London, it visit it at any point, there is a Mephisto shop on Bond Street (or there was, I haven’t actually walked down there in a while but pretty sure it was still there when I last checked).

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 16/06/2025 08:10

I need the wide fit unfortunately

DeafLeppard · 16/06/2025 08:14

I hear you. Am currently looking at some Grenson sandals but I miss the colours and variety of Birkenstocks!
