Goodbye Birkenstock my go to shoes have now gone.....

A bit of a rant really.

I have worn Birkenstocks for well over 30 years, had almost every colour and style, worn them everywhere, walked for miles, never had any issues with sizing, quality or comfort.

Until now, and I have had enough...

Bought a fancy 'limited edition' pair in Singapore in the Birkenstock shop, Giza style, bright metallic silver with a big buckle in a iridescent blue/purple colour, black footbed, loved them so different. This was just under 6 months ago cost of £186, now the silver is rubbing off the leather, esp. round the buckles where also the leather underneath is all scratched due to the buckle, the toe post leather is wrinkling up badly, the top of the sole is worn at the front, in a odd place to wear out, the soles soles feel more like 'plastic' when walking rather than the rubber of all my other ones. I mostly wear these on a night time as they are a tad, erm, bright.

Another pair of Giza, tobacco leather, 1 year old, so badly worn on the soles look worse than others I have had for almost 7 years, and the top leather looks very shabby already. Im starting to slip on pavements and esp places that have tiles due to the lack of any grip on the soles, so really rendering them unwearable.

I have a total of 12 pairs, oldest pair is around 20 years old and still going strong.

I rotate my Birkenstocks but do wear them most days, but the last 2 pairs have been such poor quality, I am not going to buy anymore. Looking at Birkenstock complaints on line I am not alone with the quality issues since been sold to LVMH, who now appear to have cheapened the materials used but the prices have really gone up.

But what will I replace them with?

I dont hold out much hope of my complaint to Birkenstock..

Rant over!

I love them too and have several pairs that are still fine after years of wear, but it doesn’t surprise me if they’ve gone downhill as so many brands have. EBay / vinted is a good option to find older, better quality stuff. And like PPs say, there are lots of Birkenstock-alikes around too - I’ve had good ones from fat face, boden and schuh. Moshulu I found a bit less sturdy.

Also look at Keen, Camper and Alohas - not for anything exactly like Birkenstocks, but they have nice sandals with a similar vibe and comfort.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 09:36

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and comments, going to be looking at them all.

I have some brands for other shoes such as Geox (trainers), Tevas (oh my they rip my feet apart) and Fit Flops, just feel a bit unsteady on the platform but the ballet flats are great.

I read an article about one of the Birkenstock family's grandson and his bragging to the new owners of how large of a profit margin they made on each pair. Not anymore from me.

Looking at Trust Pilot there is a lot of issues with customer service esp in the UK, lots regarding buying direct from them but others about poor quality so not holding my breath for an answer. I'm glad its not just me finding them not as good as they once were, sadly like many things now.

I've just bought some FitFlop trainers and hikers. Admittedly these are not sandals and I have only had them a few months but oh mu goodness they are soooo comfortable. They do make sandals...

FofB · 27/03/2025 09:59

Hard agree. Used to pay the postage to get them shipped from Germany many, many years ago. Those old pairs still going strong.

Most recent pair- the colour faded and they fell apart.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 09:59

I'm liking the look of the Fit Flop Gracie, in the sale with Flip Flop Shop.

There are so many cheap copies around, I guess it just isn't worth it to pay for the originals if they're expensive but cheaply made.

I have a pair that were 15e from a chain store, they're twice as comfortable as Birkenstocks and have lasted two years already with no issues..

IamwhoIsayIam · 27/03/2025 10:05

I normally purchase a fresh pair of birkenstocks every spring as I don't rotate them and just wear one pair to the death. However this year I have gone for a CelticandCo copy. The footbeds feel lovely, the leather is good quality. Lets wait and see. As a brand Celtic and Co are very reliable with good customer service and most stuff made in the UK or sourced from UK raw materials.

ps the link image below is not the birkenstock ones obviously

TonTonMacoute · 27/03/2025 10:06

I have to say I hate my Moshulu Arizona cork sandals, the strap pinches my little toe quite painfully.

I was going to treat myself to some new Arizonas this summer, obviously I'll have to look around, or stick with the old ones.

The Celtic & Co ones did pop up on my sm feed recently and they did look good.

ERthree · 27/03/2025 10:11

Fitflop Lulu are what i live in. So comfortable and last for years. I walk miles every day in mine, i walk on the sand, the grass and the pavements and it takes a long time to show any wear. You can often get a great deal on the Fitflop site or Amazon.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 10:13

@IamwhoIsayIam There are some really nice ones there, lots of different colours as well, really liking the low sling back ones. Some really good prices as well. Not bought from this company before, thanks for the link.

So OP, do you wear them in the winter months?

SantoriniSunrise · 27/03/2025 10:19

I also bought some gorgeous pale pink Arizona's two years ago. Unfortunately even though they are supposed to be the softer footed, I find them really hard and they hurt my feet.

They look gorgeous though so still wear them if I'm not going to be walking around too much.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 09:59

I'm liking the look of the Fit Flop Gracie, in the sale with Flip Flop Shop.

They're on Amazon and you can read reviews, a few say they aren't lasting well but lots of positives about the comfort.
Probably depends how much you plan on wearing them.

Harbourofdiscovery · 27/03/2025 10:33

@Springee I wear them all year round, I live in the tropics, so have so many pairs of shoes as many dont last well in the heat/humidity but my trusty Birkenstocks have always lasted no matter what, I feel they are good to walk in with the lack of pavements.

I have bought them from UK, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia so not just getting them from one place. But no more.

Right I must make a start on dinner and come out of the shoe black hole!

Thanks everyone so far for all your suggestions and feedback with regards to other brands.

I will be back in the UK in a few weeks so will hopefully of ordered some to try.

I like air and grace for comfort and style. I have had mixed experiences with Birkenstocks rubbing my foot underneath.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 27/03/2025 10:53

I got a pair of Autenti sandals in TKMaxx last summer (same style as Birkenstocks) and they are way nicer than my actual Birkenstocks and are proving very durable (I wear them an awful lot). I went back to get more!

BonnieBug · 27/03/2025 10:59

I find that after one summer of use the suede footbeds go all rough and become uncomfortable to wear.

CrystalSingerFan · 27/03/2025 11:19

Phunkychicken · 27/03/2025 06:41

Not sure if you can get Moshulu where you are but they have fab birkie style sandals with extra cushioning. Annoyingly I don’t fit their sizes so I did splurge on Birkenstocks but find them v uncomfy other than as slippers so won’t bother again.

I have a pair of Moshulu 'fake birkie' sandals. They're comfortable and accommodate my wide size 8 feet nicely. Disclaimer: I use them as indoor shoes/slippers, although I occasionally forget and go shopping in them and that's fine too.

Good luck in your search - I used to buy Hotter shoes and recently the quality seems to have declined too. Sigh.

mamakoukla · 27/03/2025 11:19

Just a reminder - if you have an old beloved pair, you can get them resoled, change the bed etc.

Munnygirl · 27/03/2025 11:22

My Birkenstock only lasted 6 weeks before the rubber sole wore away to the cork footbed. This happened in more or less the same time frame as 2 others I bought. I complained to Birkenstock as was refunded every time. Unfortunately the quality is now crap

HillyHoney · 27/03/2025 11:28

I've really gone off Birkenstocks in recent years. I have FitFlop Gracie (there's various similar styles under that style name - mine have two thinnish straps over the foot and one round the back) and they're very bouncy and comfy. I also love Teva and had a pair of their Universal Slides in leather that were a good Birko alternative. At the moment I have their Zymic (rubber/EVA) style which I'd recommend for comfort but obviously it's quite a different look.

CarrieOnComplaining · 27/03/2025 11:49

Another long term Birkie wearer. I hate the new BirkoFlor stuff.

KittenPause · 27/03/2025 11:52

I only wear suede Arizonas and have had no issues with new ones bought in the last 12 months
