A new thread to share 'shopping from our wardrobes' so we realise we already have nice things to wear and don't need to buy anything else.

I'm intrigued by the Whering app.
I've just been looking through my online ordering. One pair of trousers I have worn to death, and would have estimated five years was actually three. A tee shirt bought at the same time has been worn a handful of times.
Something appeals about the tracking and stats.

It feels a big task uploading everything, anyone managed to see the task through?

Apparently the average UK woman has 118 items. I can't help feel looking at my mum and the size of my friends wardrobes that might be under declared.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/01/2025 09:27

Thanks for the pep talk ladies, I've gone with grey tailored trousers, a thermal long sleeved top and a cobolt blue jumper. This shade of blue is really fab on me. Then my barbour coat on top with hat and gloves as its freezing!

Cantonet · 06/01/2025 10:13

I have 356 items @ToastTastic.
Maybe that's why I have a need to be on this thread 😁 I find it easy to use. Initially yes you have to spend time uploading a lot of information. But it becomes second nature eventually. I've actually used the App every day since I've uploaded it as I find it incredibly useful & informative. I'm keen to note my cost per wear of each item of clothing. My aim is to make sure everything is less than a £5 equivalent. I've worked out that I wear neutrals far more than colours, even though I do love colour. So I predominantly Invest now in neutral Cashmere - cappuccino/mole/tans & grey, although some browns & burgundies have also been added this year. Essentially a sort of uniform! I'm a soft autumn colourway ( but can also wear soft summer colours in summer)

Cantonet · 06/01/2025 10:14

Sounds a great outfit @LivingDeadGirlUK.

IncessantNameChanger · 06/01/2025 11:56

I think I will put things on Vinted for two weeks. I'm thinking to myself that I'm saving more money just by not buying in the first place. Sometimes I like listing things just to prove to myself things have no value

TosstTastic · 06/01/2025 12:48

I think I'll make an effort @Cantonet .
I go through flurries of purchases. Last year I upped my PJ game and knit wear, this year it's been bases - skirt, wool trousers and pinafore.
A few years ago it was shirts.

For a few years I travelled or lived minimally, I have no desire to go back to only have minimal choice. It gets pretty dull only wearing one jumper all winter. And stuff quickly passes from brand new to worn out when it has a hard life.
But I'm hoping to be more purposeful in my rotation, rediscover old favourites.

ShopMyWardrobe25 · 06/01/2025 16:34

Thanks for the Mia Marples recommendation @CharlotteCChapel. I'm needing to shake up the wardrobe and hoping this is where Whering comes into it's own in time. Turning hangers is a good starting point @IncessantNameChanger. I've slowly came to realise that my lifestyle (and body shape) have changed which is partially responsible for my glut of clothes - something I started to feel shameful about before realising that'd do no good and the best I could do would be to wear them (ones that now fit, anyway).

I love a bit of leopard print (and camouflage) @Cantonet. Years ago, I bought a fuzzy leopard print coat and get so much wear from it. I'm a latecomer to orange @Netcam, but liking it! (I spent many years wearing black [I wasn't even a goth in my youth!] so slowly embracing colour). I do like a long cardi - hope yours has kept you cosy.

Trust you've smashed your first day @LivingDeadGirlUK - and that you managed to stay warm as well as stylish. Another glam and gorgeous outfit @WillaDeWord . I often find it useful to have an equilibrium check when things are tough - fashion, nature, fitness, laughter.

The stats and tracking available on Whering is an appeal to me too @TosstTastic. I work in a very evidence driven environment and don't know why I haven't yet applied this logic to the wardrobe. I can see me getting competitive with myself about wearing items (and getting rid of those I don't utilise).

ShopMyWardrobe25 · 06/01/2025 16:40

I had a Pilates class directly before work and ended up keeping that gear (plus a Finisterre fleece) on until lunchtime when I eventually got changed (I needed to head out briefly and felt I needed to be 'properly' dressed). This afternoon and evening it's Finisterre Yarrel jeans and thick merino cardigan over an ancient cos 2 ply cashmere crew neck. Leather brogue like trainers and I've attempted to match my socks (matching socks is a recent 'thing' I've developed). Feeling warm.

I've just made a small sale purchase which comes under my low buy for 2025 requirements - a Cyberjammies dressing gown in their sale (70% off!). I've got a thick fluffy winter dressing gown, and decided I wanted a long lightweight summer robe which would also be good for taking on holiday. Cyberjammies are one of my favourite brands, and it also means I can get rid of the 3 cheapie summer dressing gowns I have, none of which are quite right.

The Whering app has been downloaded. Just got to start the mammoth task of cataloguing everything now. This will be very enlightening (and probably scary!).

Cantonet · 06/01/2025 17:41

I feel so much better about my conspicuous over-consumption now. My current item count is 177 for winter. The rest is summer archived fashion. Presumably that's allowed? I list bags, jewellery, accessories & nice socks on the App to be fair.
I just love the archive function on Whering. I transfer my eBay items over to there & also the clothes that my 20 year old student daughter nicks from me. Often Cashmere that comes back in holes or my nice coats.

I also have a thing for matching socks!

Outfit today is attached. It's a variation on yesterday's theme. With burgundy cashmere accessories, autograph eBay bag & Adidas flatforms. Plus an eBay cashmere hoodie.

@Cantonet, I have 336 items, so we are similar! I don't put bras, knickers, socks or nightwear on there either, but all other clothes are catalogued.

I probably have enough clothes in most categories for 10 years.

I have a 20 year old student son, and an almost 18 year old student-to-be-next-year son, but they don't borrow my clothes. We must be at a similar life stage.

I have uploaded 41 things and am already hooked!
In my 50s, have been through the whole menopause redistribution of food storage and am a bit more settled for the future. My teens are rocking what they call 'vintage' but is actually the choice bits of my 30s & 40s wardrobe.

@LivingDeadGirlUK, hope your first day went well, outfit sounds a good choice.

Back to work after 2 weeks off today, but WFH. It was nice to have picked out my outfit for this week yesterday and I was very warm in the orange jumper and long cardigan.

Also wore a Dilling merino sweatshirt, Icebreaker joggers, and Icebreaker merino base layer for my morning exercise before work on my rebounder (pictured). It helps me get out of bed to do it if I know I'll be warm.

And my thick green Norwegian jumper Acclima thick outdoor trousers and Hoka trainers for dog walking.

@TosstTastic, 50s here too, I'll be 55 in just over 2 weeks. I agree it's nice to have a choice of clothes. Glad you're enjoying the Whering App.

@ShopMyWardrobe25, hope this thread helps you shake up your wardrobe. Nice to see your exercise outfits too.

And I'm with you on changing body shape. I think I've wanted to try new things out as my style had adapted post menopause.

I think it went well thanks! Think I'm going for a jumper dress tomorroe, got a few options picked out.

Netcam · 06/01/2025 21:06

@TosstTastic, love the blue cord shirt and your artistic 'behind the plant' photo.

TosstTastic · 06/01/2025 21:40

@netcam think I nailed Peter Davidson, Dr Who vibes in a low budget episode, cheese plant alien.

Selfie because my initial Whering board was a little clumsy on scale. Massive poncho, tiny legs, different kind of Alien!

Digitaldedado · 06/01/2025 21:46

This is a great idea - I only want to invest in quality items this year.
What's the app everyone is using for the outfit boards?

Cantonet · 07/01/2025 11:43

The Whering App @Digitaldedado.

@tosstastic I love the soft tones & contrasting colours in your outfit.
I find putting outfits together online weirdly addictive too. It's an online equivalent of dressing dollies. Plus my Mum when i was tiny used to always buy the dress the dolly little comics with the paper cut dresses you could attach with tabs. Anyone remember those?

Yes @Netcam I think we must be at a similar life stage. I have 4 kids between 18-25. My 20 year old is a very cool vintage dresser ( architecture student). Often with my clothes. Though she has an innate ability to sniff out quality the minute she walks into a charity shop.
I'm 60 as I had kids very late, but I get told I dress young...

Outfit attached today.A lot of Uniqlo & M&S. My only plan is dog walking, as it's intermittently snowing here.

Still wearing this outfit, it's keeping me warm and I'm not bored yet.

I mentioned the paper dolls/clothes with tabs to my son recently - he looked at me aghast!

It's beautifully sunny here today (bit cold!). Autograph cashmere crew neck, Uniqlo front pleated brown jeans, Jaeger wool blazer (purchase I'm so happy I made at the end of 2024) and Celtic footwear.

Leaning heavily to browns at the moment.

Do you mix up jewellery / accessories to stave off boredom or do you not feel the need @Netcam?

I don't really wear jewellery apart from my wedding ring and very occasionally some earrings if I'm going out somewhere special, which is a very occasional event.

I mainly WFH so I'm not really that bothered but when I go to the office I tend to consider what I'm wearing a bit, just because it's fun and I see people other than my DH who I share a home office with.

Or when I meet up with friends I like to think about what I'm wearing, although it depends what we are doing, usually it's coffee and/or a walk. I don't really go out and party in the evenings these days!

I'm fine for a week wearing the same thing if I'm happy with it. I have lots of clothes that I like, I'm quite into my clothes, which is kind of strange since I don't wear make-up or jewellery, or dress up in other ways.

I love this thread! Tried to start something similar the other day… following a year of health and strength i’m a different size so I spent some of 2024 divesting myself of all my clothes on Vinted and donating to charity and then re-buying them in different sizes. It was quite the challenge! Different things suit me now so I’ve been experimenting a lot. I shopped in charity shops and Vinted all of 2024 & have a very short list of some must haves for 2025.

I'm going to check out the app you’re all using - it looks cool and just what I need.
