A new thread to share 'shopping from our wardrobes' so we realise we already have nice things to wear and don't need to buy anything else.

Loving seeing outfits posted!

That's a beautiful Monsoon scarf. I feel the quality has went downhill (across the high street) and was chatting about this the other day. Can anyone remember when GAP used to do great quality merino? I've still got some from 2010 - 15 in my drawers (handily, gap clothes used to come with a label identifying season/year... May well still do but never buy from there now). What's more, it's still fantastic quality after so much wear, tear and laundered.

I've also got an old Autograph coat that I picked up for around £70 10 years ago - it's 80% wool. You'd be lucky to get any/10% wool in a coat for that price now. 10 years isn't that long and we are surely more clued up on natural fibres than ever before. Such a shame.

Agree that high street quality has gone downhill and there are few decent fabrics.

I remember I once had a lovely 100% silk skirt from Monsoon, I can't imagine them selling that anymore, everything is Viscose. And White Stuff once had some interesting clothing, now it's dreadful both in style and quality.

Regarding coats, I agree it is hard to find good wool coats. Although one of my best bargains has been this 80% double faced, unlined wool coat I got in a Jigsaw sale in February 2023 for £73.40, as recorded in my Whering App and I've worn it loads. I risked washing it on the hand wash setting recently even though it's dry clean only and it came out like new.

I used to buy loads of stuff right at the end of a season at bargain prices, hunting out natural fibres. But no buy this year, so I'm not going to look.

I love your Celtic & Co coat by the way. That is a brand that I like these days.

Nearly at a 100 things listed on the app and there's not much more.
My archive of things gathered, that lasted beyond wearing to distruction or extreme lifestyle changes has now gone to my DDs. A niece got a halter neck, green velvet dress from Monsoon (lined and with additional net petticoat). I bought that damaged in the Boxing Day sale 1999, repaired it and wore it for New Year. It was rather lovely seeing it given a new life with young blood in 2023.
But my wardrobe is now down to suit my life not memories from the past.

Today's at home, garden, errands look

@TosstTastic, I'm very impressed that you've nearly finished uploading everything with only 100. And great that you have managed to rehome some things. I like the pinafore, looks very versatile for different seasons.

OP posts:
TosstTastic · 11/01/2025 19:25

I love the pinafore! It's a really thick cotton and lined, you wrap it around like a massive hug.

I've had great fun discovering the stats pages on the Whering app. It's made me very mindful of do I really need another skirt when I have several and I know I don't wear them often. It takes the buzz out of seeing a bargain.

"But my wardrobe is now down to suit my life not memories from the past. " - this resonates so much @TosstTastic I'm trying to be much more intentional and mindful. Listening to the minimalists podcast also to prompt me to think why I'm keeping items and be confident in letting them go.

I'm trying hard to gloss over the 'Bosie' word @Netcam. I have a beautiful vintage Shetland wool cardigan (possibly has more repairs than original wool) - Bosie have a beautiful cardigan that's the closest I've seen to a replacement. Can't justify it at the moment but the lure is strong. Enjoy birthday celebrations.

Netcam · 11/01/2025 22:01

@TosstTastic @ShopMyWardrobe25, I'm with you both, no point in keeping things you are never going to wear.

I am certainly not minimal and love the choice and variety, but I don't want a wardrobe full of stuff I'm never going to wear because I have other better options, or because it's just not something I'd wear in my real, everyday life.

And great to keep reminding ourselves we are here to not shop, unless it's from our wardrobes! I think the first few weeks will be the hardest, then we will get used to it.

I shopped today but it was for dance trainers which are on my need list. I’ve set aside Monday to upload some bits to Vinted and also to start putting stuff on the Whering app. Let’s all start 2025 as we mean to go on!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 12/01/2025 11:55

An issue I seem to have is with necklines, lots of jumpers wifh necklines lower than tshirts etc. I got a few roll necks which are great for comfort but don't entirely suit my chubby face.

TosstTastic · 12/01/2025 13:23

I just embrace the glimpse of t-shirt as the modern way. More relaxed, a hint of our secret (buried) athletic roots.
Maybe the roll neck or shirt collar out is a little out of step with today.
I can't cope with the tightness around my neck, I can later up with a scarf if need be, allowing me to shed when my menopausal thermostat does its unnecessary thing.
Here's a look, ignore the models expression. She's clearly being forced to wear age inappropriate clothes against her will. Do you have a shirt you can try with the collar tucked in if a hint of tshirt seems too informal.

One of the joys of a low buy year is not looking at online photos trying to judge whether something will fit and being totally distracted by the models expression. They can't win with me, too sulky, too happy I worry for their mental health.
I hope I wake up next year to a revolution in clothes honesty, I suspect not!
I am enjoying some of the niche brands for swimwear and PJs using different shapes &sizes for the same product, that does feel like a real step forward.

Cantonet · 12/01/2025 14:12

@WillaDeWord I used to love Monsoon too. Especially the silk & taffeta ballgowns when I was at Uni. I have 2 sisters so we used to share them all around. I used to buy a lot of silk from there & Warehouse/ Episode strangely used to be brilliant for silk suits/dresses.

@TossTastic.Monsoon was great for girls clothes. I especially loved the nightwear & swimwear for little girls. We lived in Hong Kong for several years & we could pick up pretty Monsoon dresses in Stanley Market for very little money.

I'm away visiting my parents so this is my attending hospital appts. Outfit.
All neutrals as I'm here for 3 days & it's easier to match other things together.

I like that look! I don't think I have anything to achieve it though but am currently working through uploading my wardrobe on the Whering app.

My issue is more jumpers with a boat/scoop neck and then most my tshirts are crew neck, or v neck tshirts then don't look good with a blazer. I am looking forward to having things uploaded so I can play without having to get changed :P

I like your layering options @Cantonet , hospitals can be so stuffy after the cold of travel.
All the best for tricky times.

Beach walk, gardening, sofa choices today.

Great selection. Gardening....you're brave in this weather.

We're coastal south-west, sheltered in a valley. Nothing ever stops growing, we've had so much rain the place is a quagmire. My gardening clothes aren't smart as the picture suggests. As everything ages, it moves from best, to errands to gardening. That twill skirt is bramble proof!

The house is n't the warmest so we all tend to later up. Fluffy dressing gowns and wrist warmers were the biggest Christmas present hits this year.

WillaDeWord · 14/01/2025 08:14

My outfit today (in the office, but no external meetings). I had forgotten but remember how good Warehouse was for silk@Cantonet. I still have a few of their silk blouses which I wear on occasion. You have reminded me to dig them out (though will no doubt get around to them at some stage when uploading onto Whering).

I took my Mum shopping yesterday as she loves a tour around the big M&S near her. She's really not well at the moment but perked up sufficiently to buy herself some Cashmere in the sale, as she's permanently freezing. She also bought me a Xmas present. A Sienna Miller animal print silk shirt. So I'm wearing it today to cheer her up, as I'm going home later.

@WillaDeWord where's your coatigan/long cardigan from? It's really nice!

WillaDeWord · 14/01/2025 09:58

@squeakydinosaur the coat is from Max Mara! One of the things I wear the most often.

TosstTastic · 14/01/2025 11:34

One of my colleagues has a fantastic coat. I never tire of seeing it every wintery week and at the start of Autumn.
It's a good reminder that we don't need one for each day just the right one. Love to see it pop up @WillaDeWord

SqueakyDinosaur · 14/01/2025 14:14

It's a beaut, definitely!

nothingeverhappensinstmarymead · 14/01/2025 17:47

Agree that is a gorgeous coat. All the outfits on this thread are lovely, I'd like to shop your wardrobes! And on the subject of shopping, my Bosie jumper arrived. I had secretly been hoping it wouldn't fit so I could send it back and save the money but I think it's just too nice to do that. The colour is amazing, a really vibrant blue. Super soft wool and a lovely chunky knit.

I am slightly worried about how well it will wash but planning to wear it carefully and hopefully not need to wash it too often. Thanks @Netcam for the inspiration!

ShopMyWardrobe25 · 14/01/2025 21:11

Reading your post about packing, @Cantonet, is making me wonder whether using the app will aid my packing for trips. I'm a notorious overpacked and feeling optimistic this will help me!

Special shout out to your skirt @WillaDeWord. It's stunning 🤩

ShopMyWardrobe25 · 14/01/2025 21:13

Outfits from last few days. Very casual. I've got two days in the office later in the month and (sadly?) getting excited about 'dressing up' (a little).
