A new thread to share 'shopping from our wardrobes' so we realise we already have nice things to wear and don't need to buy anything else.

Welcome @JustWalkingTheDogs, congratulations on the successful no buy 2024, you'll inspire the rest of us to keep going!

Great idea for a thread OP!

I have got far too much stuff so I am determined that 2025 will be my declutterring year. I’m retired so really don’t need an extensive wardrobe but have a ridiculous charity shop habit which threatens to take over the entire house which I definitely need to curb.

I’m also going to download the Whering app as that looks like it would be a great way to get a handle on what I’ve already got.

Netcam · 05/01/2025 10:08

@Cantonet, you sound like me, I wear my nice clothes for everything and often spill food/toothpaste etc which I end up trying to rinse out.

Agree it can get boring wearing the same thing. Sometimes I keep a couple of different outfits on my 'currently being worn' rack and swap them about a bit.

I don't think I've ever bought anything from Brora that isn't in the sale, even then it seems expensive. But they have some really lovely clothes, not all my style as some are a bit floral patterned or just too long/oversized for me, but I have found some things I really like.

Nice to find others with a passion for natural fabrics. Like you, it's something sensory. I just hate the feel of polyester or acrylic and I can't wear it. I don't even wear much cotton as I don't like the fact that it absorbs sweat and smells and needs washing so frequently. All my summer t-shirts and tank tops are merino.

Welcome @NeedWineNow, I find the Whering App great. Although initially cataloguing all of my clothes was a huge task, after that I have added them as I bought them.

@WillaDeWord is that a Maxmara?
I love the coats & they last forever.
I used to buy them pre-kids but now sadly can't afford them. But it annoys me having to de-bobble my Mango knock-offs.
What a gorgeous FairIsle jumper.

WillaDeWord · 05/01/2025 11:54

@Cantonet it is indeed - they are my favourite for coats and the material wears so well.

And speaking of de-bobbling, @Netcam the mustard sweater dress is 100% cashmere from Joseph. Perhaps my best ever sales purchase - though I need to de-bobble it regularly.

To other conversations on this thread, I also regularly re-wear my wool and cashmere - slips, airing between wears and also some of this https://steamery.co.uk/fabric-spray-rose-musk-500-ml helps me do so.

Fabric Spray Rose & Musk 500 ml | Steamery

Refresh your clothes with a pleasant scent. Our Fabric Spray leaves your textiles with a lasting scent of rose and musk. Available in 500 ml and 100 ml.

I'd love to join! I have just downloaded the Whering app so a lot of work ahead haha.

Netcam · 05/01/2025 13:13

@WillaDeWord, that dress is even more stunning knowing it's Cashmere. I love a good sweater dress and mustard.

Need to make sure this thread doesn't spur us on to go looking at shops other people's lovely clothes have been bought from or it will defeat the object entirely!

Interesting to hear your way of dealing with rewearing knitwear. A jumper worn over a long sleeved top probably gets two weeks of wear before it gets washed, trousers one week and a big cardigan a month or two.

When the wool/cashmere has been washed, I debobble it and pack it away carefully in a zip lock bag for next time. Each of my pieces of knitwear probably only comes out like this once or maybe twice each season.

It's just I tend to air overnight and wear the next day, so I don't have too many things out and once.

Then I also have a set of merino joggers/hoodie for exercise and a big thick jumper and outdoor thick trousers, which get muddy, for dog walking in the winter. So with all of those hanging up for current use I don't really want even more 'to rewear' outfits.

But I guess I could sometimes stretch to two outfits on rotation for variety, especially if I can wear the same big cardigan for warmth over the top of both.

That's a gorgeous dress @WillaDeWord - luxurious, yet understated. I'd imagine it'd be very versatile and as such easy to wear?

I was also thinking that I'd better not let thread be inspiration for purchases.

Lazy day running errands in the (now) snow/sleet/rain. Tried to make an effort with wearing a blouse rather than a tank top - it's the first time I've worn the blouse since summer, despite it being one that's easy to match.

M&S jeans, La Redoute blouse, Johnston's burnt orange cashmere crew neck jumper, Barbour, old brown leather boots (? Next) and belt.

If you want inspiration it's worth watching Mia Maples on YouTube, she recently did a stylists work my wardrobe in which she took photos of every item in her wardrobe and sent the list to 3 different stylists. I would never have put some of the items together but they rock, especially the jewel toned striped top with the square pattern gilet

IncessantNameChanger · 05/01/2025 14:54

Oh I will join in. I want to at least reduce my clothes by a third. I'm a bit of a hoarder so it's going to be painful. I already reversed all of my hangers last summer. I'm going to try to wear everything I have this year at least once to see if it can stay or not. But I have possibly got more items than days in the year!

I definitely have too much stuff for past lifestyle I no longer have. I'd love to reduce my wardrobe by 50% but that might be too hard. I will try to sell some on Vinted but really just want it gone.

Cantonet · 05/01/2025 15:54

Adding today's outfit.
Navy Primark jeans, Uniqlo top & Crush cashmere.
Uniqlo down trench & Tk's hat & scarf.
Duo leopard boots - very old.

Netcam I used to put all my jumpers away, but then found I never wore them. Or wore the same ones all the time & got very bored. So now I just make sure I update my moth protection regularly ( 3-4 months) & maybe do 3-4 days of wear before I wash them. It's no hassle because i machine wash & even tumble dry for 3-4 mins. my heavier Cashmere.

@ShopMyWardrobe25, love the orange jumper. It must be the day for orange jumpers, wearing mine too.

Bosie orange big softie geelong chunky polo neck, Icebreaker black merino trousers, Engel black silk/wool base layers, Dilling black melange alpaca/wool long cardigan, Fitflop black mukluk shortie boots (my winter slippers for indoors). Got this all out from the wardrobe today and going to wear it for WFH this week, weather forecast is cold.

Also added my dog walking outfit. Acclima thermal merino trousers, Norwegian green fisherman's jumper, Hoka Challenger trainers, Jigsaw wool hat, Icebreaker coat with merino padding and lining.

Welcome @IncessantNameChanger, good luck trying to reduce the wardrobe. I took 3 big black bin liners full to the Salvation Army clothes bank over Christmas after realising my intention to try and sell some was never going to happen.

I'm trying to make sure I wear every jumper and cardigan at least once this winter.

And once means for a week or two and then it gets washed. Do you machine wash all hand wash items? I put some of mine in the wool/hand wash setting but some special ones I hand wash.

But I can understand that it feels boring by the end, but then it's exciting again to pick a new outfit.

The Whering App helps me see what I have and I can be reminded of what I haven't worn recently.

The knitwear is all easily accessible now, having reorganised the wardrobe.

It's the first day of my new job tomorrow and I don't have anything to wear 😂

TBH the weather isn't helping I will be commuting by bus and am not 100% convinced it will be on time, so need to be warm outside and stylish in the office.

You must have something! Go shop your wardrobe and see what you can find. Good luck with the new job.

Yes, I machine wash all my Cashmere. Even the really expensive ones like Daddy's Daughters Cardigan coat. The heavy Cashmere I tumble dry for up to 5 mins, so I can hang them on a hanger if necessary & they won't fall out of shape.
Saying that I don't have any wool jumpers, as I'm allergic to it & I'm not so sure they would be as resilient.
I love the colours of the orange jumpers .

The fact everything is a little snug after Christmas isn't helping!

WillaDeWord · 05/01/2025 21:43

Today's outfit - another trusted combination this winter. Am grieving (lost a close family member recently) so rotating a few outfits atm. But thinking about fashion and admiring others' outfits is helping me (thank you, all).

Jumper is tucked into the skirt and would usually wear a belt but cannot be bothered today. Gold chunky jewellery.

I wear it a lot. Casual Fridays at work, plus the pub, or cinema, or shopping, or brunch or... Mustard is one of my best colours and I feel amazing in it, as well as super cozy.

Netcam · 06/01/2025 07:44

@WillaDeWord, lovely outfit again.

Interesting that your mustard dress is 'casual Fridays'. I would feel a bit overdressed in a sweater dress in my office. It's very much jeans and hoodies/jumpers for most people but really we can wear whatever we like. I still try and make an effort with my outfits, especially as I'm older than most.
