I’ve worn Shalimar on and off since I was 19 (30-odd years) - I always get compliments and people telling me how lovely it is/I smell

notacooldad · 09/12/2024 19:26

Narciso Rodriguez
I love the smell of that perfume but it just doesn't hold on me!

Havalona · 09/12/2024 19:28

Clinique aromatics elexir. On me - it's the only one of many I use that anyone has commented on as smelling gorgeous.

drivingmeoffmybroom · 09/12/2024 19:28

Scarlet Poppy - Jo Malone
Deep Night - Ghost
Le Labo - Rose

Range from £30 a bottle to £200 a bottle!

My absolute favourite. I only wear this on my days off so I associate the smell with freedom!

I also love one I have from Candles and Oud.

Thursdaygirl · 09/12/2024 19:36

Oud and Bergamot - Jo Malone
Cypress Grapevine - Jo Malone
Light Blue -Dolce and Gabanna

ChaosDream · 09/12/2024 19:40

Jimmy Choo - the original one. Have tried so many others but keep going back to this one!

tarheelbaby · 09/12/2024 19:45

In my regulars, I have:
YSL - Rive Gauche - I fell in love as a child b/c my mother wore it on her rare nights out. She also liked Nina Ricci, l'air du temps
Halston - spicy, woody and masculine; a winter perfume for me (not as subtle as it was in the 90s but still a contrast to the big florals)
Badgley Mishka - I don't think they make it any more but I have two precious tubes.
Sung - Alfred Sung - slightly aniseed
CK Contradiction - very caramel
Givenchy - Amarige - almond but a bit heavy
Eliz. Arden - Sunflowers - a great summertime perfume

a colleague used to wear D&G light blue - always a nose tickler in a good way
a friend wears Prada - it's okay but has an undertone that puts me off
Yvresse/Champagne - too heavy and oily for me
Guerlain - Pamplelune - wanted to like this but it had a note of cat piss for me (civet)

What does ‘nicest’ mean?

I recall the feeling of utter euphoria sweeping out of my top floor bedsit into rainy Cambridge in the 80’s - swathed in Joy EdP. (I gather it’s changed since then, as everything does.)

And the total excitement of graduate life opening out - accompanied by Guerlain’s Jicky.

Then sneaking out of a City office to luxuriate in the atmosphere of the nearest Penhaligon’s shop - I think Jubilee Bouquet was my primary love.

Decades later reshaping my life wrapped in Vero Kern’s Onda. (And probably spending the rest of my life regretting not investing in Rubj, which I still miss dreadfully.)

Currently happiness is swishing around the beloved city I’ve recently moved back to wrapped in Perfumer H’s Ink, which seems to express so much. Although the same perfumer’s Dandelion is tempting me too …

I wouldn’t describe any of those as ‘nice’ - but they’re all breathtaking. I couldn’t choose just one - they’re each inextricably entwined with a particular period of my life.

Chanel Sycomore

MrsWidgerysLodger · 09/12/2024 19:52

I've had expensive perfumes.and cheap perfumes.
Without a doubt the one I ALWAYS get asked about and complimented on is "Black Tulip" by Shay and Blue. I've had complete strangers ask me about it when I'm wearing it.

80skid · 09/12/2024 19:53

Liz Earle number 15

TwilightSkies · 09/12/2024 19:54

Poison Girl by Dior. EVERYONE comments on how lovely it is. Good lasting power too.

ItsFreedomBabyYeah · 09/12/2024 20:01

I love perfume!

YSL - Baby doll Paris (not sure they make it any more)

Dolce & Gabbana - Desire (Sadly discontinued)

Nina Ricci - I think it's called Nina

Hugo Boss - I think it was called Woman (may also be discontinued).

I've also had Gucci, Jimmy Choo, CK perfumes over the years. Nice, but not faves.

fivebyfivebuffy · 09/12/2024 20:02

I don't think I could pick
If I was absolutely forced to I would go clean reserve skin
It's vanilla and salt which are my favourite notes and appropriate for absolutely any occasion, it just makes me smell like myself but better

Devilsmommy · 09/12/2024 20:04

Hugo Boss Deep Red and second is Carolina Herrera 212 sexy

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/12/2024 20:05

The one I get the most comments on is Penhaligon’s Halfeti, but it’s fearfully expensive and I’m not sure I’ll ever be in the position to be able to justify another bottle.

For day to day and more affordable, I like Clinique Happy. Fancy trying their Elixir after reading previous comments though.

FindingMeno · 09/12/2024 20:08

Pretty near impossible question!
I guess if I truly could only pick one, it would be chanel no 5.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 09/12/2024 20:09

@ItsFreedomBabyYeah they’ve discontinued Baby Doll- I would give anything for another bottle.
i used to love Nomade by Chloe but I think either they’ve changed the formula or my sense of smell has changed! I used to find it almost intoxicating.
I smelled Portrait Of A Lady by Frederic Malle recently and thought it was beautiful, I’m saving up for a bottle.
