Trends you wish would make a comeback

MiamiWindMachine · 08/10/2024 20:07

What fashions or other beauty trends would you love to see come around again?

Mine would be short hair for young women. I feel like young women only have short hair if it’s quite an extreme “statement” look (Pink, Wrecking Ball era Miley Cyrus etc.). Whereas I used to love those short, very layered haircuts (as modelled by Kerry Bishop of Neighbours fame in the picture). I could never have had that style myself as I have hair like Crystal Tipps, but I think the likes of Madonna, Demi Moore, Sheena Easton, Marie Friedriksen etc. looked stunning with it.

Any other votes for lost trends?

flat knee length riding boots.

I know what you mean. "Bootcut" jeans are everywhere at the moment, except they're not bootcut jeans, or not how they used to be anyway. They are too long, too wide and flared.

I've just received a pair that I ordered, and I have to agree. I don't mind them being a bit flared, but they are always too long (I'm 5 ft 7) and the legs are far too wide. I want the old style bootcut which were tight to the knee. I might be a size 16, and my legs are big - but they are nowhere near the tree trunk size the jeans seem to be made for!!! Thinking of starting a thread to see if anyone knows where you can buy proper bootcut jeans.

IntoTheOcean · 10/10/2024 23:23

Love this thread.

I’m totally lost with fashion at the moment.

I hate clumpy boots and wish classic, beautiful leather riding boots and just more of an elegant range of shoe and boot styles were back.

HATE wide legged trousers, especially ill fitting black ones that are everywhere. Bring back tailoring and slim legs styles and proper waists.

Detest oversized blazers, cropped boxy jumpers, boxy coats,. I wish more fitted - not bodycon, just properly tailored, body skimming - styles would make a comeback.

Everything is floppy and shapeless and polyester. I want structured and interesting fabrics.

Dresses are all too long or too short. What happened to just below the knee / the original midi length? I loved that length.

I hate shopping 😢

oh the cut out bits of tops and dresses trend drives me bats!

I hate cold shoulder tops.

Another vote for more variety in hair styles. So bored of seeing long hair with the centre parting on every woman of every age. When you see a group of women or girls together they often look like clones.
I don't have a preference for short hair, long hair, curly, straight, bobbed, layered, or whatever, but for God's sake mix it up a bit!

I need low rise jeans and trousers to return. I realise I'm in the minority in this but while I'm reasonably tall, I'm short waisted and your average trouser looks high waisted on me. As for actual high waisted trousers - forget about it, they're up around my boobs. Low rise jeans used to sit just right on me, around my belly button.

Yes. Even mid rise jeans are usually too high on me. I hate that feeling of your jeans cutting your torso in half when you bend over. Is there anywhere you can still buy low rise jeans/trousers?
I would also like more low-waisted skirts - sometimes I buy skirts a size too big so that they slip down to rest on my hips, not my waist (doesn't always work, depends on the cut of the skirt).

Skinny jeans with heeled ankle boots
Peplum tops
Skater dresses
Eyeliner in waterline
Fitted biker jackets

Basically stuff that was in during the 2010s!

Why do you need all this to be "in" in order for you to gain permission to wear it? Wear what the bloody hell you want.

I don't follow fashion, as you will see from my comments and tend to wear what I fancy and looks reasonable. I went dog walking in sliders and socks in the summer and my neighbour was like you looking cool there neighbour. But I'm just back from Waitrose and saw a girl in black leggings, chestnut ankle UGGS and a long padded black coat and though gosh that looks old fashioned 🤮I think this board is rubbing off on me.

Is that a fashionable look?

I wear leggings almost every day! Love them!

I don't wear uggs though or a long coat very often and thankfully I'm not short & petite either thankfully as leggings & skinny jeans make short & petite women look like 10yr old boys. Not flattering at all.

This is exactly how I feel! Women are like clones now. It's very Stepford Wives.

I thought of another one, can V necks come back please?

BeerForMyHorses · 11/10/2024 07:49

Bamboozie · 09/10/2024 09:01

More of a natural face - fillers, Botox, lip fillers seem the norm now, which I think is sad. People start to look like clones of one another.

This has already happened. Loads of celeba are getting it dissolved.
'Clean girl aesthetic' is what the teens are calling it 😂

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/10/2024 08:58

I like to see some knee length dresses. It's either midi, maxi or mini.

I want some flattering well cut clothes. The oversized, big baggy look just will not go away! And IMHO only looks good on a very slender body shape.

I want darts back in blouses and dresses so that boobs have somewhere to go!

As an aside, I'd like to see models standing in normal positions when modelling the clothes. All these leaning back and crouching down poses that seem very popular don't actually allow us to see the clothes.

I don't think anyone is saying they need permission. Just that it would be nice if certain things were readily available.

Yes to the v-necks and knee length dresses. Crew neck and midi length are awful on me.

theemptinessmachine · 11/10/2024 10:28

1970s hippy fashion. I recall last summer a young lady in Superdrug explaining to me the style points of an Afghan coat😂

Erm, who says I don't? I was answering the thread title, same as everyone else. Why have you not replied this exact same thing to every single other reply? It would still be nice if they made a comeback so that there's more choice in shops rather than all this wide leg and crop top stuff.

I've been wearing eyeliner in my lower waterline since I was about 14 FYI. Hope that satisfies you.

Floisme · 11/10/2024 15:08

Eh? I'd have defended your original post because I thought your point was clear even though I don't share your love of 2010 fashion. But more choice in shops? Of what, skinnies?

As posters regularly and correctly point out, there are still loads of skinny jeans on the high street. The difference from 2010, from what I can see, is that many of us who like other styles and shapes now have options too.

There are many valid complaints about the current high street but I really don't see how a lack of choice of jeans is one of them. There are some gaps, which other posters have pointed out, but on the whole I can't remember there ever been as much variety as there is now. It's one aspect of current fashion that I really like.

Floisme · 11/10/2024 15:11

Ah sorry I missed that you'd also mentioned crop tops, not just skinnies and my phone won't let me edit. I think the same point applies though - I've seen plenty of longer tops on the high street.

I agree about the jeans tbf but I was more thinking of other stuff on my list, such as skater dresses. That fit suits me so much but at the moment they are few and far between. Same with peplum.

dayslikethese1 · 11/10/2024 23:04

Skater dresses and skirts and big dangly earrings. I'm a bit sick of all this tiny 'tasteful' jewellery that's about. Agree with pps who said colours also, I'm bored of the 50 shades of beige.

Long skirts like we had in the 90s!
1980s sweatshirt dresses with ski pants
Hats
80s big hair because my hair looks like that in it's natural state!

I think long skirts are on their way back I'm selling my no longer fit me ones on Vinted they're selling very quickly !

Bamboozie · 12/10/2024 20:31

I’ve just thought of one I’d totally forgotten about - circa 2007/8/9 I think? I was at uni, that’s why I remember it as around those years….coloured and patterned tights! They were everywhere, I had loads of colours, my faves were these teal and purple ones that I wore with my mini skirts and knee boots. On nights out I’d wear these black and gold lurex diamond ones with my boob tube dress😄

Oh, fishnet tights were everywhere too. Although, probably best to leave them in the past.

TripleCarber · 12/10/2024 20:36

Skater dresses with tights and ankle boots and a black cardigan.
actually I don’t care if it’s in fashion it’s what I’m going to wear all autumn/winter anyway 😂
