Trends you wish would make a comeback

What fashions or other beauty trends would you love to see come around again?

Mine would be short hair for young women. I feel like young women only have short hair if it’s quite an extreme “statement” look (Pink, Wrecking Ball era Miley Cyrus etc.). Whereas I used to love those short, very layered haircuts (as modelled by Kerry Bishop of Neighbours fame in the picture). I could never have had that style myself as I have hair like Crystal Tipps, but I think the likes of Madonna, Demi Moore, Sheena Easton, Marie Friedriksen etc. looked stunning with it.

Any other votes for lost trends?

Kerry Bishop! I did not know she was residing in the annuls of my mind...!

I just want skinny jeans and knee high boots back please. Nothing more complex than that. I'd be sorted from now til March.

Ummm that's what I've been wearing all week

80s flat pixie boots. I want some sooo bad. Ebay and vinted are not coming up with any. The kind Madonna or Cyndi Lauper would wear…or any teen in an 80s film.
Not the kind older women may wear today.

I found a pair on Vinted. They are beige but I plan to dye them red.

The trick on Vinted is just trawling through. They weren't described as Pixie. Just women's boots.

I wish things were described more accurately on there, save me lots of time!

I can’t think of anything more boring than skinnies coming back. I hate the fact that trends recycle so quickly. I hate that trends in NYC are the same as London and it’s all homogenous.
I agree with you @Divebar2021 that some trends now barely make it out of Instagram before the next one comes along. But the major ones still tend to last a bit longer, e.g. oversize has been around for a while now - I'm just starting to get bored with it and I've dug out a couple of more fitted jackets for autumn.

To be fair to skinnies, I've nothing against them in theory and quite liked some of the trends that went with them last time around (but not high boots!). But they outstayed their welcome and it was their total dominance that was tedious - you had teenage girls dressing like their mothers FFS. I think I gave them up around 2016 so give me another 5 years and I might be ready.

Blue eyeliner and blue mascara

Perms (I have very fine hair and my 80's perms always gave my hair more body)

And skinny jeans, I'm trying all the others but skinnies were made for my body type.

Edited

I've been wearing bright blue mascara since my teens and I'm mid 60s now 😆

I agree with other people who have said it would be nice to see people dressing up again. And Id like to go back to the days when people didn't cover themselves in tattoos, and backpacks were just for holidays, rather than people wearing them to commute, go shopping etc, who either don't realise or don't care that they constantly knock into other people.

Totally agree - they only suit the very petite and gamine.

This is bollocks:

Tamsin Greig
Anna Chancellor
Daniella Nardini
Carrie Ann Moss
Liv Tyler
Jamie Lee Curtis
Robin Wright
Cynthia Nixon

...all tall and strapping, all look fantastic with pixie cuts.

Ivymedication · 10/10/2024 09:47

Tbf I've had short hair the majority of my life since I was 12, a few flirtations growing it, and I've always been called a lesbian or some other lovely attempt at a put down for the 30 years since.

I'm just sick of all the beige, and quiet luxury doesn't look luxury if it's a pair of polyester trousers from H&M that some "influencer" is showing me how to style when they are so wrinkled it's hard to tell if she's putting on the trousers or the paper bag they came in.

Plus styling is not shoving on a cheap bland pair of trousers an expensive belt you were ALLLLLLL "gifted", a bland crumpled jumper and a pair of sunglasses. That's just getting dressed.

There is no individuality!!

newrubylane · 10/10/2024 09:52

I went out yesterday and between the car park and the high street I passed 4 women. Every single one of them was wearing black leggings a long black puffer jacket and giant trainers. Depressing.

Nemasu · 09/10/2024 16:42

Fitted shoulders /sleeves in tops, I'm so sick of everything being drop shoulders, makes tops hang like shite and it's only done because it's cheaper to manufacture

I actually suit a drop shoulder done well, but I agree that the quality of them is frequently crap these days.

PyreneanAubrie · 10/10/2024 10:00

@TheLeadbetterLife To me these women look masculine, which is not a look I favour. Clearly you disagree and that is fine. You're entitled to an opinion, just as I am, but calling someone else's comment "bollocks" is really not necessary. Having an opinion does not make something a fact. edit for typo

newrubylane · 10/10/2024 10:04

Also, can we ditch those hideous elasticated cuffs on dresses and blouses? Another cheap (and looks it) shortcut by manufacturers.

Good grief, heaven forfend a woman look anything other than delicately feminine.

Thingamebobwotsit · 10/10/2024 10:17

I oscillate between well fitted, tailored pieces (think 1940s, 50's through to 60s Mary Quant style) or proper grunge.

Make up if you want it to enhance, but not this ridiculous trout pout, slugs for eyebrows and gravity defying boobs. Oh and less pressure to wax everything... Basically more natural and dressing to your shape.

It's a horrible look, made worse when the long puffer coat is sleeveless and that dirty rose pink or beige.

Skinny jeans with heeled ankle boots
Peplum tops
Skater dresses
Eyeliner in waterline
Fitted biker jackets

Basically stuff that was in during the 2010s!

Surprised at eyeliner in waterline was ever in style I don't remember that?! It's so unflattering like that imo

Doggymummar · 10/10/2024 11:59

I don't follow fashion, as you will see from my comments and tend to wear what I fancy and looks reasonable. I went dog walking in sliders and socks in the summer and my neighbour was like you looking cool there neighbour. But I'm just back from Waitrose and saw a girl in black leggings, chestnut ankle UGGS and a long padded black coat and though gosh that looks old fashioned 🤮I think this board is rubbing off on me.

Is that a fashionable look?

You are quoting women with excellent bone structure and fine features.

Uggs are for comfort. Puffa jackets for warmth. A sort of urban look the equivalent of a farmer in Barbour and wellies. Both eminently practical.

longhauler · 10/10/2024 13:01

In some ways there are things I like which I DONT want coming back into fashion (little things I wear like Celtic jewellery) because if they did then I would suddenly look like I was being a slave to fashion, and everyone else would be wearing it too!

Also it would inevitably drop out of fashion like a hot potato and then I'd look like someone stuck in last year's trend. (As opposed to still wearing what I've been wearing since I was a teenager in the 90's).

I know exactly what you mean. I felt that way when brogues (Hamble Oaks!) and, more recently tweed had their moment in the sun. No doubt brooches will be next. You feel all smug about having your own look and then suddenly it's everywhere and then the next thing you know, everyone's moved on and you're still wearing it. Harumph.

But the good news is that there are so many fly-by-night trends now that in a year or so, everyone's forgotten anyway.

WaveringAverter · 10/10/2024 19:23

@Lovethatforyouhun How about these? There's a tall version too. I lived in these 10 years ago with skinnies! (Unless that makes me one of the dreaded older women) https://www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk/womens_boots/pixie_boot_black/12658_p.html

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 10/10/2024 20:13

Like many posters I hate big/flouncy sleeves. I take them to the tailor at our local dry cleaners and she takes them in/shortens them. I find a narrow 3/4 length sleeve much more flattering.

I'm shocked to learn skinnies and knee high boots aren't fashionable - that's my go to look at this time of year and even my highly critical young adult daughter said they looked great.

I think that depends on your eye colour. I have very dark eyes and I will wear eyeliner in my waterline for ever, as it gives me a sexy smoky khol look. Agree it can look harsh / dated on lighter eyes

Just being able to dress up a bit…I went looking for some wide legged trousers today, they all had elasticated waists! They don’t flatter ANYONE!

Look else wear. There are a gazillion wide legged trousers with fixed waistbands out there
