Trends you wish would make a comeback

What fashions or other beauty trends would you love to see come around again?

Mine would be short hair for young women. I feel like young women only have short hair if it’s quite an extreme “statement” look (Pink, Wrecking Ball era Miley Cyrus etc.). Whereas I used to love those short, very layered haircuts (as modelled by Kerry Bishop of Neighbours fame in the picture). I could never have had that style myself as I have hair like Crystal Tipps, but I think the likes of Madonna, Demi Moore, Sheena Easton, Marie Friedriksen etc. looked stunning with it.

Any other votes for lost trends?

The natural face. It's really weird all these women/ people with a serene Botox face cause they can't really smile or grimace. It's got to start affecting personalities at some point if you can't express yourself and makes those of us who don't take part look the strange one...for now.

I think Botox etc has a lovely window then looks disturbing. Not that my 11s don't look disturbing

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/10/2024 12:42

Dressing up. Not all the time—in general I like how casual everything is now—but it would be nice to go to a restaurant occasionally where you couldn't get away with trainers and a t-shirt.

Same with dinner parties—my inner Margo sometimes longs for suits and dresses to be standard evening wear again, even at home.

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/10/2024 12:49

Agree also with the natural face. I don't think botox is particularly noticeable, but fillers make everyone look a bit uncanny valley. It's quite sci fi, like pod people or Stepford wives—the same slightly peculiar cheeks, lips and eyes on every face.

I'm sure I'll be piled on now by people assuring me that when it's done well you can't tell, but you always can.

crackofdoom · 09/10/2024 12:53

Ballet cardigans (those wrap ones).

I think they'd go really well with the current high waisted wide legged trouser shapes, but I cannot see a single one out there that isn't from a proper dance suppliers (and quite pricey).

RosesAndHellebores · 09/10/2024 12:57

Tailoring and good fabrics that are well cut and hang well. M&S did it in the 80s and 90s.

Half lined trousers for less than £150 in a variety of lengths.

The return of the in store alteration lady.

AHFBridport · 09/10/2024 12:58

Yes to short hair (when dd2 decided to cut all her hair off at the age of 12, a waiter in a restaurant called her 'sir' Hmm.)
Yes to ballet wrap cardigans, I love them and had a beautiful one from East, much more flattering than standard cardies.
I'd like proper good quality velvet and corduroy back, not this thin crap that's everywhere.
But I am glad Mary Janes are back, now let's have some affordable velvet ones for the Christmas season.

AHFBridport · 09/10/2024 12:59

Lining! In all dresses, skirts and trousers. Hate unlined clothes.

Princessfluffy · 09/10/2024 13:00

Bright colours!
Neutrals are so so dull. "Quiet luxury" can get in the bin.
Also wish there would be more fun DIY fashion like in the 80s

Princessfluffy · 09/10/2024 13:01

I'd like to see punk make a comeback

BrainNotAvailableTryAnotherOne · 09/10/2024 13:04

Ballet flats!

Andarna · 09/10/2024 13:05

A bit of flamboyance in dress style. Where I live the women all wear neutrals and basics or athleasure wear. I like to see someone wearing something colourful or eccentric sometimes.

qualitystrawberry · 09/10/2024 13:08

I remember always wanting to look like Winona Ryder in Reality bites

This is interesting @Princessfluffy, I suppose the reason this isn't a thing now is cheap, fast fashion, which just makes everyone look the same and be manipulated into buying the next trend a few weeks later.

DIY fashion in the 80s was a creativity boom that evolved from punk, but I suppose people made stuff because they couldn't afford to be buying new things all the time. There's a documentary on Netflix about the Blitz club, and how it was absolutely essential that you wore a completely new avant garde DIY outfit each week. Kids were living in squats and spending all their time cobbling together amazing New Romantic looks.

Now, people just buy endless new tat, instead of making and re-making, and there's no creativity at all. Magazines years ago—teen and adult—always had easy dressmaking patterns, or ideas for turning some household thing into a fashion item. Even my Girl Guide handbook had instructions for a simple pencil skirt.

Happyinarcon · 09/10/2024 13:21

Not something I’ve ever worn, but I’d really like to try a proper Victorian corset as opposed to a bra. Im tired of the shoulder and back straps digging in. I read somewhere that a proper corset distributed the weight better and provided a lot of extra bust and back support.

newrubylane · 09/10/2024 13:21

At the moment I'm craving smart casual mini dresses to come back in. Like little printed dresses with a waist and normal (non-balloony) sleeves. Probably c. 2010? The kind of thing you could wear almost anywhere - pub/office/night out, with boots and tights in winter and sandals or flats in summer. I'm thinking Kate Moss vibes, mini and flirty, edgy with a biker jacket. Dresses now are all either super glam and sequinned or maxi, tiered and oversized and make me feel frumpy.

CandiedPrincess · 09/10/2024 13:23

Agree @newrubylane two things I wish would die a death - midi dresses and smocks. They don't look good on anyone, however much people want to convince themselves otherwise!

I'd love Regency fashion to come back Grin

Ideally none, I'm bored senseless with the endless recycling of trends and I'd love to see something new.

But if you twist my arm, I'd go for jeans with embroidery around the hem and up the legs, last seen (if I recall correctly) around 1974. I'm not bothered about it catching on, I'd just like one or two shops to sell them.

Joe Browns often stock jeans like that.

MainsDrain · 09/10/2024 13:42

Full on ball dresses for Black Tie.
Seems to be all slinky cocktail dresses even when men are in DJs.

Vicliz24 · 09/10/2024 13:49

Colour - the shops are a sea of deeply unflattering to most people beige .

PiggieWig · 09/10/2024 13:53

Tops that cover your belly

longhauler · 09/10/2024 13:59

Pixie boots, leggings and a slouchie sweatshirt

A bit more colour / bolder colours - not the boring neutral skin tone milkshake shades that are on trend nowadays

Grungy stuff instead of boring "elevated basics"

@TheLeadbetterLife I do think there is an upsurge in crafts like knitting, crochet, sewing, jewellery making so I'm hopeful that wearing your own creations or those of your friends is on the rise. There definitely is a fast fashion backlash happening.

I think daring to look different is holding us back though as a society.

I really dislike the trend for looking like an inflatable identikit sex doll. On the upside, at least high heels seem to have been largely discarded 😀
