Trends you wish would make a comeback

What fashions or other beauty trends would you love to see come around again?

Mine would be short hair for young women. I feel like young women only have short hair if it’s quite an extreme “statement” look (Pink, Wrecking Ball era Miley Cyrus etc.). Whereas I used to love those short, very layered haircuts (as modelled by Kerry Bishop of Neighbours fame in the picture). I could never have had that style myself as I have hair like Crystal Tipps, but I think the likes of Madonna, Demi Moore, Sheena Easton, Marie Friedriksen etc. looked stunning with it.

Any other votes for lost trends?

I'd like to see punk make a comeback

I think actual punk fashion would just look as jaded as any other revival, but that punk DIY spirit and creativity - absolutely yes please. Plus no-one cared then whether something was flattering, which would be a bonus in my book.

Bootcut jeans. I'm slender but have big calves so I look disgusting in skinnies but I hate those wide leg dragging-on-the-floor type jeans. I just want good quality bootcut ones!

80s flat pixie boots. I want some sooo bad. Ebay and vinted are not coming up with any. The kind Madonna or Cyndi Lauper would wear…or any teen in an 80s film.
Not the kind older women may wear today.

'Older women' 🤣🤣🤣

Do you mean the ones that were wearing Pixie boots in the 80s?! 🤣🤣🤣

@TheLeadbetterLife I do think there is an upsurge in crafts like knitting, crochet, sewing, jewellery making so I'm hopeful that wearing your own creations or those of your friends is on the rise. There definitely is a fast fashion backlash happening.

I think daring to look different is holding us back though as a society.

I really dislike the trend for looking like an inflatable identikit sex doll. On the upside, at least high heels seem to have been largely discarded 😀

Crafting is popular, but it's still niche, whereas DIY fashion was mainstream until recently. It was just normal to run up a skirt or cushion cover, or customise things—my friends and I used to do it as teens in the 90s all the time. I remember one friend making an amazing patchwork denim maxi skirt out of a load of old jeans.

Same goes for fancy dress. A fancy dress party was an opportunity to be creative, and it was always expected that you made the costume. I used to spend ages making costumes, and had a box full of fabrics and hand-me-down bits and pieces. Now people buy off-the-shelf tat which ends up in landfill straight after the party.

I bought a pair about 3 weeks ago in Benetton.

I know what you mean. "Bootcut" jeans are everywhere at the moment, except they're not bootcut jeans, or not how they used to be anyway. They are too long, too wide and flared.

WeRateSquirrels · 09/10/2024 10:02

Not really a trend, but I'd really love some normal sleeves. I'm broad of shoulder and do not need ruffles, puffed bits or anything 'statement'.

I’m big of boob and what you said plus dropped shoulders are an immediate no.

StormingNorman · 09/10/2024 14:22

I’d like the return of dresses you can wear a bra under (looking at you Zara).

Tops that cover your belly

Absolutely this. I am quite tall and even when I was younger and thinner I didn't like having my midriff on show. Nowadays I find it impossible to find T shirt and jumpers that don't reveal my belly if I so much as move my arms. I'm sure this wasn't the case a few decades ago. I tend to resort to wearing much longer tunic tops but I'm not sure they suit me and all I really want is a jumper that actually covers my top half.

quirkychick · 09/10/2024 14:38

I agree with pp to looking natural and creativity in clothes. I think as a teenager in the 80s, we just couldn't get hold of stuff we wanted or had seen on tv, magazines etc so we would have to make it. A case in point would be doc martens that people customised by painting, adding ribbons etc for laces, but now you can buy in every style imaginable. I don't mean replicating 80s style, either, but the spirit of creativity involved.

Game0fCrones · 09/10/2024 14:41

Tailoring - especially coats and jackets.
skirts and dresses without frills, flounces, lace.
Fitted clothes.
proper flat waistbands; none of this elasticated shit.
skinny jeans
Aztec print (I know, I know)
Batik print
Paisley print

Exactly! I mean bootcut that are more of a straight leg but just very slightly wider at calf/hem and a fraction narrower at lower thigh. The new ones look more like flares.

The natural face. It's really weird all these women/ people with a serene Botox face cause they can't really smile or grimace. It's got to start affecting personalities at some point if you can't express yourself and makes those of us who don't take part look the strange one...for now.

I think Botox etc has a lovely window then looks disturbing. Not that my 11s don't look disturbing

Yes. I agree. I saw a woman out walking the other day and her face shocked me. Her lips were enormous and bright pink and her cheeks were like hamsters.

GameOfJones · 09/10/2024 15:02

I'd like to see more variety in the clothes teenagers and young people wear.

I'm only mid 30s but when I was a teen there seemed to be much more creativity and individual style. You would at least have some kids that liked the grunge look, emos, goths, preppy, those that wore sportswear, funky dyed hair, piercings etc. Teenagers nowadays just seem to be in a sea of North Face jackets, grey joggers and the boys all have Fluffy Edgar haircuts with the girls all having long, straight hair. It's like a uniform and there doesn't seem to be the individuality there used to be.

I quite like the wearing trousers and a skirt at the same time look, and was reminded as I saw someone doing it on Saturday. I live really near to a fashion college.

Yes!
I loved that in the 90's. A good club look.

I've never let the skinnies go, I don't care. I don't care how untrendy I am - I am short and petite, they suit my body shape. Everything else looks shapeless and frumpy,

I'd like to normalise heels again on a night out. Everyone goes out in flats these days but I put on a heel and instantly feel better, more glam, more finished. Saying that, I still embrace the heel.

Skinnies are BACK. So you are at the forefront of fashion ✔️

CandiedPrincess · 09/10/2024 15:35

@PeggyMitchellsCameo Wahey! First time for everything.

user2848502016 · 09/10/2024 15:36

Long skirts like we had in the 90s!
1980s sweatshirt dresses with ski pants
Hats
80s big hair because my hair looks like that in it's natural state!

Nemasu · 09/10/2024 16:42

Fitted shoulders /sleeves in tops, I'm so sick of everything being drop shoulders, makes tops hang like shite and it's only done because it's cheaper to manufacture

Ceilingplatter · 09/10/2024 19:56

Lentilweaver · 09/10/2024 09:49

Totally agree about short hair. These days if a young woman has short hair, it's assumed she is 'trans'😡 Bring back 90s Winona Ryder, I say.

I miss individuality in general. Many of the young women I see look like Stepford wives: long straight hair, false lashes, laminated eyebrows and duck lips.

Edited

I’ve had short hair forever and have never been assumed to be trans! Do you mean the weirdos who harass less feminine presenting women in bathrooms would assume that?

piscofrisco · 09/10/2024 20:45

@crackofdoom I got a ballet cardigan in the spring for &other stories. It does go well with wide leg jeans. Worth a look to see if they have them in still, or else eBay.

BESTAUNTB · 09/10/2024 20:58

I remember Kerry Bishop, a veggie, arguing with Gail because the latter wanted to sell kangaroo skin wallets in her shop. As it happens, the Gail actor was a wildlife/animal welfare campaigner IRL. Odd, the things you remember!

Frosted lipstick suits me for some reason. I’d like to be able to wear it again without looking like a throwback!
