Lesbian mother of the bride outfit.

Hey all.
I came out 5 years ago and since then have been slowly finding a style that I feel is authentically me. Historically I was the boss's wife, wearing clothes that were expected of me, that I never felt comfortable in.
My dd is getting married next year, the grooms mum has already started posting huge hats, big dresses, in our wedding planning group. My dd has said you'll wear a fascinator though ( to me ) but eek. It's just not me.
My style is more Cate Blanchet, stylish suits, soft shirts, heels.
I have no idea where to look to find what I have in my mind.
Wedding is monochrome but guests can wear any colour.
I've never been a mother of the bride before. Help.

Sorry no help but your style sounds fab! Does anyone wear a fascinator now!? Personally I hate them too

Brunosmumsy · 03/10/2024 13:10

Thank you for that. I have a shortish hair style with a choppy cut.

Phase eight have some nice suits, in various colours.

I saw one photo where she's wearing leather trousers and a dramatic cobalt blue top. That might be an idea too.

sweetpickle2 · 03/10/2024 13:13

Not sure what your budget is, but when you said Cate Blanchett I immediately thought of Veronica Beard- for example this is great https://veronicabeard.com/en-gb/products/edia-pant-rose?pageSource=productListing

Tell your DD that nobody wear fascinators anymore!

I wonder if you wear some sort of hair clip/slide/fancy ‘thing’ in your short hair instead. If you daughter really wants something.

Brunosmumsy · 03/10/2024 13:22

Oh my word, that suit. 😍

OP posts:
Defiantlynot41 · 03/10/2024 13:36

That suit is fab. Something like this in your hair? Fascinators are definitely over!

I went to a posh dinner last Christmas and one of the guests was wearing a teal velvet trouser suit with oyster silk shirt, very Cate B and made everyone else look a bit dated!

My style is definitely more your end of the spectrum than MOTB crimpelene suits and I'd wear a cloche hat - the perfect hat for short hair, in fact they were designed for short hair.

wwjalme · 03/10/2024 13:45

Just say no to the fascinator. You don't have to wear anything like that. Groom's mum can wear whatever she likes.

JadedFilly · 03/10/2024 13:46

Hmph! Grin

Not seeing the relevance of sexuality to outfit. I’m not lesbian; I have short hair and am just as likely to wear an expensive trouser suit as an expensive dress to a wedding.

The important thing is your budget. Also context (season, locality) and culture of wedding. And whether you want something bold or Mumsnet. (Sorry! Not sorry.)

Oh my. Teal velvet. How gorgeous. Wedding is in February so would work .

The relevance was trying to explain how I'd gone from very boss's wife dresses that I never felt comfortable in to a side undercut, choppy short hair and a liking for suits and waistcoats.
Maybe it wasn't relevant.

Traditional mother of the bride type outfits are so dated now. As are fascinators. As are 'princess' wedding dresses. Go with something that feels 'you'.

princessbear80 · 03/10/2024 13:50

Here’s a teal velvet one from M&S www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-velvet-straight-leg-trousers/p/clp60689941?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share

It’s your post you can say what you like! ❤️

TylerEndicott · 03/10/2024 13:51

Aspiga have velvet or posh cord trouser suits, bit on the dearer side though

JadedFilly · 03/10/2024 13:51

Yes. But. People on the thread don’t know what you were like before!

Anyway. How much do you want to spend? And do you care about designers / fashion, or not?

crazycatladie · 03/10/2024 13:52

What about a stylish jumpsuit, I went to a posh wedding and one of the bridesmaids had a beautiful jumpsuit on in the same fabric as the other bridesmaids dresses

StormingNorman · 03/10/2024 13:54

Cate Blanchett has great style. Something like a fedora would look very chic with a trouser suit, particularly a wide brimmed one.

Would something like that feel more you?

JadedFilly · 03/10/2024 13:54

What’s your usual clothing size?

I think it is relevant to give the background and I think by sharing that and talking about how your style has changed and how you felt uncomfortable in boss's wife dresses has meant people have come up with some good suggestions rather than just "Can't you just suck up wearing a dress and a hat for one day for your daughter" or similar guff.

Thank you, yes I was a bit afraid of that response if I'm honest.
I would feel really out of place if I did that.

Hadn't thought of a jumpsuit tbh. I can definitely see how that feels.
