What’s this shoe trend? Medieval jester?

I do love browsing the latest trends to see what people are wearing but I’m seriously struggling to understand when/how medieval inspired shoes came into fashion. Anybody get this? I can’t decide whether I hate them or not - the Khaite ones seem to be selling out super fast 😂

Poulaines! I once, for work, made a short documentary film about shoes, and medieval poulaines were discussed. Supposedly, they were representative of wang size.

Fascinating how stupid shoes that you can't walk in used to be men's bailiwick.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 11/09/2024 23:22

My eyes 😂

The Khaite ones aren't too bad but it seems designers are out of ideas if they have to go back this far!

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/09/2024 02:34

Give them 4 wears and the longer toed ones will have toes pointing skywards. They were a thing in the 90's as I recall and were butt ugly then too. The trend didnt last long.

Peaky18 · 12/09/2024 02:37

Winklepickers?

BusterGonad · 12/09/2024 03:12

I quite like the first pair. There's something quite 90s about them that appeals to me.

Fraaahnces · 12/09/2024 03:50

They can’t be comfortable either…

MiaFeysImprobableBosom · 12/09/2024 06:21

What if you have to get on an escalator? That could get messy. And squidgy.

GoditsSeptember · 12/09/2024 06:26

@MiaFeysImprobableBosom 😬 that's a thought.

They made me laugh OP.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/09/2024 06:30

@MrTwatchester I'd like to thank you for a new (to me) word: bailiwick. And a very satisfying word it is too.

DrRiverSong · 12/09/2024 06:31

Look like a recipe for bunions to me

anxietyaardvark · 12/09/2024 06:40

Wouldn't you be constantly jabbing things with them? People standing on the ends on the tube?

unsync · 12/09/2024 07:04

We had those back in the 90s. The toes catch on the floor when you walk.

MetaDaughter · 12/09/2024 07:09

I was ready to dismiss your whimsical musings (they’re just boots) - but I hadn’t looked at Khaite for a while so clicked on their N-a-P page - first thing I saw was this; an entire medieval outfit:

https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-gb/shop/product/khaite/clothing/evening/garothy-cropped-suede-jacket/1647597340050041

Quite fetching - but wouldn’t you feel obliged to carry yourself off to the Ashmolean and stand in observance for several hundred years, waiting for your moment - like poor Rory with Amy in Dr Who?

Chersfrozenface · 12/09/2024 07:23

'Ow much?

Go to a reenactment market (I can provide details) and get a pair of ultra pointy medieval boots in lovely soft leather for a lot less than £1,280.

MetaDaughter · 12/09/2024 07:27

Superb work, @Checkoutmyshoes - you have truly illuminated my comprehension of the Khaite collection. They must have had an entire year’s worth of interns scattered across the better European universities, poring over manuscripts and paintings.

Shit-flickers, we used to call them.

I'll tune up my lute.

soupfiend · 12/09/2024 08:00

The fact that they're selling out fast doesnt really mean anything, they might make very small numbers of items so it would look as if loads of people have bought them

I really like that suede jacket. No good for flabby tummy sticking out underneath it though.

Edingril · 12/09/2024 08:04

I like them better than those witch shoes seemed popular a few years ago the pointy ones

GoingRoundThatBlockAgain · 12/09/2024 08:10

Personally I am looking forward to my Satin Caterpillar era - thanks @MetaDaughter!

I would wear the Khaite ones - having lived through the 90s they don't look strange to me.

I am too much of a peasant to afford them though.
