What’s this shoe trend? Medieval jester?

I do love browsing the latest trends to see what people are wearing but I’m seriously struggling to understand when/how medieval inspired shoes came into fashion. Anybody get this? I can’t decide whether I hate them or not - the Khaite ones seem to be selling out super fast 😂

I am too much of a peasant to afford them though.

Check the sumptuary laws @TheYearOfSmallThings - you might be ok!

Fernie6491 · 12/09/2024 09:00

Very popular in the sixties as I remember. Then they chopped of the point and we all wore chisel toes 😄

I still have my Nine West ones, perhaps I could sell them on VC for ££££ using the description provided by @Itssamemario.

Poulaines! I once, for work, made a short documentary film about shoes, and medieval poulaines were discussed. Supposedly, they were representative of wang size.

Fascinating how stupid shoes that you can't walk in used to be men's bailiwick.

Omg I love this! How hilarious!

What if you have to get on an escalator? That could get messy. And squidgy.

Well on the plus side you can keep people at least a few ‘feet’ away from you 😂

@MrTwatchester I'd like to thank you for a new (to me) word: bailiwick. And a very satisfying word it is too.

Same! Great word!

@MetaDaughter omg you’re right! I didn’t even notice the medieval outfit to go with the shoes! That’s my winter outfit sorted!

'Ow much?

Go to a reenactment market (I can provide details) and get a pair of ultra pointy medieval boots in lovely soft leather for a lot less than £1,280.

Well to be fair in my research yesterday after finding these I found a wonderful pair of renaissance ballet style shoes which were fab! If only I had a reenactment to wear them to! Oh and at a fraction of the cost of the Khaite boots!

Shit-flickers, we used to call them.

Haha or perhaps that’s what they used to call them too given the hygiene standards of the medieval age

I would wear the Khaite ones - having lived through the 90s they don't look strange to me.

I am too much of a peasant to afford them though.

I lived through the 90s too and definitely don’t remember this trend! It is also quite Wild West too I suppose.

Thanks all, nothing made me chuckle more than to catch up on your messages then as luck would have it, see this imagine as I travelled through Charing Cross station this morning. It’s a sign! Perhaps I should take fashion inspiration from the mural?

Thank goodness I never throw anything out! I've got some serious black leather boots with long pointy toes, the spitting dab of one of the Khaite pairs that I bought in the 90s.

80smonster · 12/09/2024 10:11

Love the Khaite boots.

littlestrawberryhat · 12/09/2024 10:11

They’re just pointy boots…..not even that pointy. I expect you’ll be wearing a watered down version in a few years time when it’s trickled down and been exposed to the masses

potplantsinparadise · 12/09/2024 10:14

Oh I love this style (elf boots?) - would be very happy if those mocking them could find me some in a slightly cheaper price bracket :)

Lavenderblossoms · 12/09/2024 10:17

That second pair 🤣 I howled. Very funny op.

These were just two examples. There are others that look like Pinocchio’s nose. It’s ok if you like them. Not everyone has to like the same stuff 😉

I actually really like the Toteme boots, and the Khaite medieval-inspired looks generally. It all looks stylish and comfortable, yes please.

Looking forward to you sharing a picture of how you’ve styled them 🙂

Sadly I won't be buying them—I have no occasion to wear them that would justify the cost. If I lived and worked in a city, I'd be all over this look, but I work from home in an area full of farmers.

Well no - if I wanted them I’d be wearing the original iterations.

I like Toteme, they can do almost no wrong in my eyes, in terms of design. I wouldn’t choose those particular boots but I have my eye on some others. And their clothes are perfection.

In the past Khaite has seemed like a sort of high end early 2000s Jaeger - good intentions but disguising a lack of understanding of the styles they’re emulating with an excess of embellishment. With Jaeger it was gold buttons and pointless zips, with Khaite, just a misapplication of concepts. That’s still the case with the bag above - two different straps, but both performing the same function. (Where more talented designers would have the two straps at different lengths to perform different functions.) But on the whole this medievally influenced collection is better than almost anything I’ve seen of theirs for years.

Notquitethere60 · 12/09/2024 10:48

I think extremes of fashion will only be picked up by very few people. I had seen the khaite boots before but wouldn’t ever spend that much on such an extreme style. Fine if you need to be seen in a new trend; for the rest of us, I’ll stick to my clompy boots for now.

Checkoutmyshoes · 12/09/2024 10:57

@MetaDaughter actually I think you’re right. Previous collections of Khaite have been boring sleeveless ribbed tops and some style of jogger/trousers.

This is quite adventurous for the brand but bizarre also especially for the price point (btw I have boots that cost over £1000 but I’m more into the biker style then medieval, 90s or western)

I hate the clompy, thick-soled boots, trainers, loafers etc that have been the trend for the last few years. I struggle to walk in soles that are more than a couple of cm high—I feel like I have no connection to the ground and end up going over on my ankle. Can't wear wedges for the same reason. I also hate the feeling of "too much shoe", so I'm glad to see thin soles and soft uppers coming back in.

SnapdragonToadflax · 12/09/2024 11:12

I really like the first ones, but I did have some ankle boots a bit like that in the 90s and I remember them being annoying to walk in 😂

Presumably this means pointy toes will be back in fashion for a few years.
