What’s this shoe trend? Medieval jester?

I do love browsing the latest trends to see what people are wearing but I’m seriously struggling to understand when/how medieval inspired shoes came into fashion. Anybody get this? I can’t decide whether I hate them or not - the Khaite ones seem to be selling out super fast 😂

I had boots like that in the 90s/early 2000s. Just fashion cycling back around.

Don't think I'll be getting them again though! Been there, done that that!

Andante57 · 12/09/2024 17:04

Maybe these, from the Czech Republic?

I was certain I knew a name for these from my childhood and it's just come back to me - winklepickers!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/09/2024 17:54

Well, if we're going full medieval, that'll save on the heating bills.

Maybe we'll see brigantines and gambesons in the menswear lines by next A/W?

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 12/09/2024 18:10

Eh? The boots, and the majority of the clothing/outfits are entirely unremarkable.

The only items that look like they belong on a medieval jester are the pictures/paintings of medieval jesters 😂

Aww, I was really into medieval fashion when I was about 10. I know, it was before the internet so we all had too much time in our hands. My wonderful granny crocheted me a pair of bright blue long pointy footwear. I I wish I still had them!

I liked that dress until I saw your comment, and now I can't unsee this...

Same, I thought it was beautiful and now, not so much.

I dont like the pointy toe boots and shoes. I didn't like them last time round either.
They make your feet look ridiculously long, and the pointy bit always ends up bent up slightly.

I'll stick to my big clumpy, thick soled boots ta.

Cheeseismyfavourite · 12/09/2024 20:45

Haha I had a similar pair in the 90’s I remember trying to shut a door - I couldn’t work out why it wasn’t shutting then I realised my extra long shoes were caught in it

Beesandhoney123 · 12/09/2024 20:49

They don't look very practical. And how much!!!

Sceptical123 · 12/09/2024 21:24

Men had these in the 60’s and they were popular as laced shoes about 10-15 years again - again men 🤷🏼‍♀️

SabrinaThwaite · 12/09/2024 21:58

If they’ve gone truly medieval then at least there’d be no fumbling about to make sure that you’ve got the right boot on each foot - because there were no left and right shoes, they were both the same shape (according to my re-enactor colleague).

I like that the Wiki page on poulaines notes that people must have fallen over a lot.

You have just reminded me!

About 12 or so years ago exH ordered a pair of those long toe italian style shoes. He had to get his shoes from a specialist place as he has size 14/15 feet, so WTF they were selling them for I have no idea!

I may have actually peed laughing when he tried them on he looked like Side Show Bob! Needless to say, they went straight back. In his defence (and its not often I say that!) you didnt get the sense of how overlong they were on the website!

MaidOfAle · 12/09/2024 22:57

The problem with winklepickers is going up stairs. I could never get my foot properly on the step of my local dive bar and would end up having to ascend sideways-on.

@MrTwatchester Maybe you could tell me what medieval mens tights were made off please?
I gave always been intrigued that they look like leggings but then realise they had no materials with any stretch.

I had a pair of all wool leggings in the 80's but they bobbled terribly at the inner thigh, went baggy at the knee and got ( inevitably) ruined in the wash. In pictures the tights always look so tight and neat.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 13/09/2024 06:19

There's also Guaracheros, apparently they're related to penis-size concerns too

Does anyone else remember the Leningrad Cowboys? Pointy hair, pointy shoes, and strong feelings for their tractors. Great fun.

Hand woven wollen fabric, which has some stretch, cut on the bias, pieces cut to fit the wearer and seamed rather than just a straight up and down tube.

And there is some evidence for lacing or even sewing into place on the wearer, for instance at the ankle.

I'm afraid I'm not a clothing historian, just a telly idiot. I have dilettante-level knowledge in a lot of niche subjects.

We call them 'shit flickers'
