With just under 3 months to go until 1 December, there are some big decisions to be made! Thread to discuss advent calendars while we wait for more content revelations and release dates.

Regards the M and S one specifically the bag ... not to my taste either however I have mine away with the boxes on Olio last year and the recipient was very chuffed to receive so that was a win win.

Also I managed to sell an old Liberty calendar empty box on Vinted this week for £15 which I was extremely pleased with

Peridot1 · 05/09/2024 11:06

@ChannelLightVessel - I use a flannel too but I think some people use a face wash and just rinse using their hands. I hate doing that because of the drippage issue. I use a cleansing balm and a washcloth or flannel. If I wash my face with a face wash it’s in the shower.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 05/09/2024 11:08

Showing my age but towelling type wristbands were a fashion accessory for some in the 80s! 😱😂

You might all be swanning about in them outside the bathroom next year!

Fairyliz · 05/09/2024 11:12

My LF box arrived this morning and I’m really pleased with it. Looks good and it’s huge, not quite sure where to store it. There are several products I will use and some I will give to my adult daughters.
Would it be wrong of me to have an October advent?

Peridot1 · 05/09/2024 11:17

@TheWeeDonkeyFella - I remember that too! Last time I wore them was when I used to play squash on non air conditioned courts when we lived in Bangkok in 1990! Very necessary to wipe the sweat away!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 05/09/2024 11:24

I really like the H&B one. I will get it for dd definitely and possibly dn. I'm debating getting it for myself too. I love the Faith in Nature products and it only has one DoD (the bath salts - I don't have baths) but that's easily offloaded. I'm curious about the wrist bands now I know what they're for and am happy to give them a go. I have psoriasis on my scalp so the massage brush and scalp scrub look good too. I also quite like lavender. And no black eye liner!!!

I had originally planned on getting Liberty but it's not worth €360 to me. Space NK isn't calling to me either as most of the items I'm excited by are travel sizes and a lot of the full sized items don't really appeal. I'm still adding CB to my spreadsheet so we'll see how that fares.

God yes. I remember that. Plus the leg warmers.

I'm exactly the same. Foaming cleansers are DoDs for me for that reson.

What ARE the wristbands?

Looks like M&S have gone for another bag. I don’t like them. They feel very old-fogeyish. Like the St Michael’s of my youth.

The M&S bag was also terrible quality last year. It had no structure so wasn't even good enough to repurpose. I guess that they must be cheaper to produce than the boxes - not good for the environment though!

I usually pick up M&S. I don't include it in my advent calendar count though. I think of it as a gwp 😂

I hate hate hate lavender and mint type of scents, if I didn't I'd definitely go for H&B, excellent value and I had one the year before last I think it was and it was really good.

I'm really pleased with the beauty bay actual box, feels sturdy enough to re-use and isn't overly Christmassy. Just have to resist opening it before December now :D

I really like lavender and mint scents, which makes me more tempted to buy this, although I really don't need it!

IDontHateRainbows · 05/09/2024 11:32

I've succumbed and ordered the Harrods AC. The scent one is nowhere to be seen, sadly, so I reluctantly got the standard beauty AC instead. I figure they must have enough in stock to have listed it on the website again, and hopefully it will arrive soon but if not I can wait.

Having missed out on the fragrance AC I'm really hoping Harvey Nicks do what they did last year, wasn't an AC as such but a fragrance beauty box GWP around oct/nov time. Can't remember if the AC counted as a purchase towards. And space NK did a similar fragrance xmas box, 12 days of christimas thing. No sign of that for this year but I have emailed customer services to ask if they are doing it again.

Full disclosure I open mine as soon as they arrive and cream off anything that I like the look of, then sell the rest to (hopefully) pay for it. I know some are against selling on here, but for people who just want the odd thing not the full calendar it is doing them a favour, and it's the only way I could afford it otherwise as I'm currently out of work.

MidnightMeltdown · 05/09/2024 11:35

@ChannelLightVessel Yeah I used a flannel too. Surely it's necessary for wiping away makeup? 🤔

I do too. The flannel gets wrung out before I use it. I thought everyone did that, obviously I was wrong.

How are people washing their faces?!? I am usually naked and always use a flannel: there’s not a lot of splash.
Hair washing is a different matter, I appreciate.

I wash my face in the shower in the morning but in the evening, I wash it over the sink.
I double cleanse so apply a balm to remove make up, and remove with a wrung out flannel or cloth (minimal mess at this stage)
Then I run the tap to wet my face, apply a foaming cleanser with my hands and then rinse with my hands. This is where the mess can happen! I've been washing my face like this for years, and I'm now pretty skilled but I do sometimes get damp sleeves, and IMHO, there's not much more unpleasant than soggy pyjama or dressing gown sleeves, hence my excitement at the wrist bands!

I'm also old enough to remember the towelling wristbands of the 80s...never occurred to me to use them for this purpose though!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 05/09/2024 11:59

I've ordered the H&B. Very happy they are back in Ireland.

Oh my ….I lived in my rolller boots, I used to skate everywhere. ❤️
I had leg warmers too! 😁

Sunnydaysarehereonceagain · 05/09/2024 12:43

I’ve been enjoying this thread so much, reading everyone’s views on the calendars.

I was planning on reigning in my advent spend this year. I’ve already indulged in too many Liberty kits (I have 4 unopened 😳) and other spends to qualify for GWPs over the past 12 months. My plan was to get just H&B. Well I’ve ordered that today (so looking forward to those wrist band thingys 😂), but that didn’t scratch my advent itch and despite my best intentions I’ve been and ordered Liberty too! Somehow, maybe because it was the first calendar I ever had, Liberty says Christmas to me. Not keen on the exfoliators or the black eye liner, but everything else will get used. I’m away for the second half of December, so half of both calendars will be waiting on my return and see me through the dark days of January

CalicoPusscat · 05/09/2024 12:44

@ChannelLightVessel depends on how tired I am, either a face wash if more energy or just micellar water if fatigued.

@Fairyliz any time is advent time 😁

Really happy my H&B is booked, there do seem to be a lot of serums but like some others I'll gift some of the contents.

And I've had hair loss so am happy with biotin, scalp massage brush and rosemary shampoo

@thetimeisnow - definitely don’t let anyone put you off getting a lovely advent calendar. Some people just don’t get it. Either they are not at all into make up or skin care or are just miserable buggers! The size of the advent calendar market would suggest that they are in the minority. These threads bring so much enjoyment to people too. Almost as much as the actual calendars I think.

Regarding the wristbands there was a thread on here a few weeks ago from someone asking how people, wash their faces over the sink without drowning the place and a few people recommend wristbands.

M&S is probably a no from me purely because of the bag. I have enough bags and it doesn’t look like one I’d use really. I didn’t get it for the same reason last year. Much preferred the year they did a nice tin. And also I just don’t need any more stuff!

My Liberty AC was dispatched yesterday. I’ll check it briefly for damage and to make sure each drawer has something in it but then it will be going away til 1 December. And I hope to forget the contents by then!

I still use the tin! It's on my home office desk to lift my laptop in more eye friendly level and I store some office items in it

CocoMascara · 05/09/2024 13:07

"I usually pick up M&S. I don't include it in my advent calendar count though. I think of it as a gwp 😂" 😂I like your style @MidnightMeltdown 😂

I've gone full circle and am now reaaaallllyyyyyy wanting Liberty's again. I'm going to wait until the loyalty vouchers come out in oct and keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't sell out before. I normally use the eye shadow and good genes, have a teenager for the black liner and I think i'll use everything else. V excited, first liberty advent!

QueefofSheena · 05/09/2024 13:33

Had an email from Vogue. AC looks gorgeous but there’s too much in there that I already have in my stash or won’t use, so it’s a no from me. Maybe next year when my hoard is reduced. I don’t know how to link on my phone.

IDontHateRainbows · 05/09/2024 13:39

I wash my face using an oil based cleanser straight on the skin, then a cream cleanser, them wash off with water and flannel and use toner to ensure all cleanser is gone.
