AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

Everything’s on Vogue Runway. Just get the app.

(Though I’m afraid they don’t show by age …)

Theremedy · 12/08/2024 11:14

I had no idea that existed! Thank you!

Be aware it’s dangerously addictive!

Theremedy · 12/08/2024 11:34

😂 could be expensive

What’s age got to do with it?

henlake7 · 12/08/2024 11:51

From what Ive seen its a mixed bag.

Im here for the plaid, leopard print, greens and tailored look.

Not so keen on the funnel necks and fur coats!

I feel daft dressed like one of my teenage girls. It’s not comfortable for me and I like to dress for my age. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with dressing like a 40 something, it’s a very stylish age, you have the confidence to wear what you like and what’s comfortable. For me personally I’ve stopped dressing for the male gaze in the last few years. Nothing is more stylish than having confidence in what you wear. And for me confidence comes with wearing something I personally feel is appropriate for my age and my job and my life style 🤷‍♀️

There is no such thing as age appropriate...its a construct of the fashion industry.
If you have smoking hot legs at the age of 70 then show those suckers off!

InTheBleakMidsummer · 12/08/2024 12:11

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with dressing like a 40 something

Though you may frequently be surprised to find that other 40 somethings’ interpretation of that varies considerably from your own …

Anyone who is 40+ is, by definition, ‘dressing like a 40 something’. So the phrase is effectively meaningless - it isn’t in itself a style.

Decaffeinatedplease · 12/08/2024 12:13

I heard plaid, but that's about it.

I enjoyed a more tailored black coat last year and as I'm on a low-buy mission, I'm sticking with it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/08/2024 13:17

Olive green and wine-y red which I'm good with. Leopard print - yes please.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 12/08/2024 14:25

PragmaticDramatic · 12/08/2024 11:45

What’s age got to do with it?

Nothing - no adult woman needs to have clothes categorised by age.

I get you OP. You don't want to be wearing TikTok trends and white crew socks over leggings, you're looking for more grown up trends. Yes anyone of any age can wear what they like, but I understand what OP is getting at so it obviously is a useful descriptor. For some reason this thread has attracted people looking to pile on.

Following! Lots of dark red showing up in Uniqlo!

OKbutwhyplease · 12/08/2024 14:32

Sorry but age does have something to do with it.
I am in my mid 30s and wouldn't wear what my niece for example wears I think she looks lovely but age has changed my body and often by the time we're 40s+ we've often had children/other treatments done which a 18 year old has not.

Same here, these are all colours which suit me, as do wide-leg trousers, and I love a bit of leopard print.

Fashion at the moment is working well for me. I hope wide-leg and barrel jeans last as long as skinnies did.

Takemetothemountainsnow · 12/08/2024 14:32

I’ve also seen lots of dark red boots and footwear

Floisme · 12/08/2024 14:48

I don't know about TikTok but our local H&M, which normally plays it pretty safe, is displaying lots of animal print and double denim - not exactly new or fresh but pretty wearable should we so wish.

You don't need shops, brands or designers to put "suitable for...." on their clothes to work that out.

InTheBleakMidsummer · 12/08/2024 15:16

For some reason this thread has attracted people looking to pile on.

For goodness’ sake! Grin

I’m over 60. I don’t need to ask MN what’s suitable for over 60s. (Jeez! Imagine …) I look at what’s available to buy and choose what I like in the full and mature knowledge of my body and environment. What appeals, works with my life, works with my existing wardrobe, maybe adds an element I don’t currently have, maybe proposes a different balance of proportions. Very occasionally there’s a noticeable shift in my weight - so that might mean I can combine something new with something I haven’t been able to get into for years. Sometimes I buy from Zara, often I covet things from Zimmermann. Neither of them advertise as being exclusively for the over 60s. I don’t need an age label on clothes to know whether I want to wear them.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/08/2024 15:37

I want
paisley print
brocade
purple is good
dark red , yes

last year , black coats were everywhere, I bought one for my DD for work , it will look good this year , next year as very simple design.

I’ll be getting my leopard coat out again, my parka and my Superdry long padded coat as not caring if they are fashionable or not but if leopard is fashionable then I’m ahead already

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 12/08/2024 15:43

I feel daft dressed like one of my teenage girls. It’s not comfortable for me

But the trick is don't wear clothes that make you feel daft or uncomfortable then. Age has nothing to do with it.

and I like to dress for my age. I don't know what that even means.

DameBroad · 12/08/2024 15:43

Love Jewel tones, but olive green and maroon can go to hell. No to plaid, too.

Wish we could move on from wide legged trousers.

I hope there are some nice boots around this year. So sick of big chunky black monstrosities.

Tailoring sounds promising.

2AND2GC · 12/08/2024 16:23

Leopard (I'm going to be going for a pop rather than head to toe).

Burgundy/ dark cherry (ditto).
