AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

Busted … Grin

(Though in truth anything Guidi resides mainly in my fantasy wardrobe.)

Thank you and to @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle .

I think I will be on the lookout for a nice pair of red shoes and a red bag.
Its not a colour that I would wear in huge amounts but I have alot of khaki and navy clothes and a pop of red would look great with those!

I have an Oxblood red leather bag, that's nice and will be on trend. I like dark red. I'm fed up with green/khaki and it doesn't do me any favours either, just looks a bit dirty somehow.

Theremedy · 13/08/2024 15:21

I can live with deep reds! Might try a red lip, I’ve never managed to pull it off but I’m determined to find my shade!

M and S had some gorgeous dark red boots! I saw them in store and felt sad to leave them behind 😂

Some hideous clothes for winter then Grin

I've seen long kilts, long denim skirts, wide legged jeans. Nothing very colourful.

I bought a long denim skirt from a famous high street shop that cannot be named otherwise it creates a link . It was either collection or autograph not per Una.

too hot to wear now but I have some nice ( non red) boots to wear with it

Is it the one with the front slit? I got that one in the spring and am wondering if it will see me through AW, unfortunately I chose the very light colour, wish I had gone indigo now.

Yes , it has the front slit. There was a black and a lighter denim when I looked first . I put the black one in my basket hoping they’d send me a useful Sparks reward.
Dark indigo then appeared and a 20% off reward ….so I bought it. Original price was £55 but the reviews were good.

I do like the lines of the Bermuda shorts outfits I'm seeing. Not with knee high boots for me, I hate feeling trussed up, but they seem to work with all sorts of shoes.

Also handy because where I live it's only cold enough for proper winter clothes for about a fortnight in January*, so I'm all for spending most of autumn in shorts and jumpers.

*really need to stop buying UK-style winter clothes...

BangingOn · 16/08/2024 19:45

I was hoping there would be an autumn thread on the go, Style & Beauty never disappoints (nor does it disappoint that there’s already been the standard debate over wearing what you want, age is irrelevant etc 😃).

Autumn is my favourite season for fashion and I’ve dropped from a size 18 to a size 10/12 so I need a lot of new clothes. Looking at what I do have that fits and flatters, the basics of my wardrobe will be

  • Maxi skirts- a couple of denim skirts from AllSaints, a very flattering long black column skirt from Cos and a ribbed skirt with a front zip from &Other Stories
  • dark red Me+Em knee boots from the winter sale
  • black velvet Me+Em maxi dress

and that’s about it! I need some lovely jumpers, definitely some new tights and some more boots. Have chunky flat ankle boots had their day? Loafers do nothing for me and I’m impatient for long boots to be on trend again.

Theremedy · 17/08/2024 04:16

I definitely want to get some dark red boots, probably knee high as I don’t have any high boots at the moment, only chelsea boots.

I have decided to treat myself to a cashmere cardigan this year, probably M&S. Probably black, or should I get a different colour?

My main concern is what I'm going to wear my 4 year old Grensons with, because I'm at the "skinny jeans feel weird" stage in the cycle of fashion. I might just have to carry on in trainers and barrel legs.

I generally dress like I'm solving a crime in Copenhagen, for any fans of the Bridge or Forbrydelsen. Fairisle slouchy jumpers a-gogo. I'm sure there'll be some of those in the country-trend.

BangingOn · 17/08/2024 08:29

@Suzuki70 I love that description of your style 😁 and it sounds perfect for autumn. I like a bit of dark academia this time of year too.

Suzuki70 · 17/08/2024 08:54

@BangingOn Ooh, yes! The coats!

Mindfulmeltdowns · 17/08/2024 08:56

Oh can anyone recommend some reasonably priced boots to wear with dresses in the Autumn?

MassiveSaladEater · 17/08/2024 09:12

Why are people suddenly saying plaid? What happened to tartan?

WingBingo · 17/08/2024 09:26

Sounds like Claudia’s wardrobe from The Traitors should about cover it.

No one here knows what reasonably priced means to you … Grin

And are you wanting brands or specific items?

Good point! Under £80.

Specific items preferably.

Looking for comfortable, every day boots to go with smart/casual type work dresses.

BangingOn · 17/08/2024 11:36

Zara are generally good for decently priced boots, but they don’t have many in yet. It does feel like the shops are later getting autumn clothes in this year, my wish list is usually full of boots and coats by the start of August.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/08/2024 12:08

Oh the old “there aren’t fashions for different ages” crap - like teenagers have been buying all the floral midi dresses over the last couple of years or middle aged women have been at the vanguard of the crop top trend.
