AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

Dd is entering teens. She's good a couple of long tail bows. I would look ridiculous, but she looks great.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 25/08/2024 19:02

I too had noticed the hair bows, I remember them being called “Fergie bows” because the then new Duchess of York used them all the time. I’ve been trying to pretend I haven’t seen them every time I see them somewhere that’s clearly aimed at adults not 6 year old girls.

I think that’s a trend I’ll sit out.

Oceangreyscale · 25/08/2024 19:24

I would be very happy if skirt suits came back as I look awful in trouser suits. Maybe one day.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 25/08/2024 19:45

Well if silhouettes are getting more hour glass for jackets and tailoring, that lends itself well to the skirt suit.

I was watching a YouTube video this morning

Accreditation? Authority? What was the source of the information?

Goodness me

Not at all! But any fool can post a You Tube video - so I would want to know whether the person concerned was a clothing / fashion expert, or not.

How is that odd?

Perhaps because most people would say "Oh, could you provide a link, please?" rather than barking orders about Accreditation? Authority? Source?

You do realise that this comes across as rude, yes?

Izzynohopanda · 25/08/2024 21:35

What’s the source of any information? We could all be making it up.

I could confidently say that wearing red jumpers, yellow checked trousers and yellow check scarf will be a thing this autumn, and I’ve seen this outfit worn a lot by one ‘celebrity’ but I could be making it up.

(Guess the celebrity!)

Ahem....
Rupert the bear ...
I'm amused by the thought that fashion. Influencers or pundits need to possess some sort of qualification.

Yep. Quick work!

Goodness! I never remember how poorly tone translates here. Nor how necessary it is to add a smiley face if you don’t want people coming at you with pitchforks …

FindingMeno · 26/08/2024 05:02

I am awaiting brown knee high boots and a leopard wrap and getting excited for snuggly clothes again.

Summerdew · 26/08/2024 09:19

I think the hair bows were a micro trend last AW that have gone more mainstream, I bought a couple to try after seeing them in some celebs on Insta - they are surprisingly more wearable than you think, especially if the rest of you is quite paired back.

'authority' 😂😂

henlake7 · 26/08/2024 11:18

I think hair bows (and giant scrunchies) are def a younger trend, mostly coz the older you get the thinner your hair gets. You really need alot of hair for big accessories.

Im happy if huge oversized stuff is over as a trend. Whilst its nice in a jumper I think huge blazers and jackets just looks wrong.
Not a fan of fur either as a trend....it always seems to look either 'grandma's attic' or like it came from Shein/Temu/etc. Although I did see somebody on YT recommend a faux suede and sheepskin bag from New Look that I fancied.
Alot of the time I will just buy a bag or belt or scarf as a nod to a trend if Im not sure about it.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of autumn shopping, my favourites being a draped bubble hem burgundy skirt from Zara and a maxi kilt style skirt from Disturbia. Disturbia isn’t my usual style but I’ve found a few fab skirts from there recently.

Now we have autumn weather I’m very excited to started wearing everything.

Just looked up the skirt. Its lovely.

Still sunny in the south(got shorts on).

BangingOn · 03/09/2024 13:00

The Midlands is freezing and raining. I want to put the heating on!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 03/09/2024 20:30

I’ve seen quite a few kilts about/online, I just can’t get past the school uniform look of them. (I live in an area where most girls have kilts at school uniform, not plain black/grey skirts).

I did a jumper sort out and found a lovely burgundy cashmere jumper I’d forgotten I owned.

I have a plaid or tartan or whatever we're calling it now skirt that I bought last winter. I wore it once and was mistaken for a Secondary school kid in our local Tesco express - I will add that this was from behind, once they saw my haggered face they realised their mistake 😂 But it put me off wearing it again.

BangingOn · 03/09/2024 21:18

@FancyBiscuitsLevel burgundy cashmere sounds lovely.

I’m now googling local school uniforms to check none have kilts.

ChilliPB · 03/09/2024 22:16

I think lots of texture (silky fabrics, leather or faux and tweed) as well as typical autumn colours like olive and burgundy will be big (Who What Wear, 2024).

In all seriousness, I’m not sure what accreditations the journalists at Who What Wear have. But I enjoy browsing the site as they often have a good mix of high street and high end suggestions and different styles.

When did leopard print go out? I loathe it, so watch keenly for its demise every season - but since it became a thing about 15 years ago it's never out of the shops. I suppose it's a classic now. (In the interests of balance I love tartan, so anyone who loathes that is free to have a moan😅)

I will always love chunky knitwear, don't think that really has an in or out.

A look I'd like to do more of is 'arty utility' - cross-back pinafores and dungarees, and skirts and trousers, in heavy fabrics. With hiker boots and aforesaid chunky knitwear. Nice and long for my 5'10". Toast but cheaper. There's Community Clothing, but they're a bit spenny, and I think the same look can be achieved with judicious buying at Seasalt.

Izzynohopanda · 04/09/2024 12:26

@ChilliPB i agree, ‘WhiWhatWear’ is a good blog to get a feel for the trends, and their suggestions include high street stores, as well as top end ((although they do favour a few stores). I have a dress brought directly from one of their recommendations.

BangingOn · 04/09/2024 12:56

I like Who What Wear too, although I have to get past the terrible wording of their article titles which always sound so click baity.

LoobyDoop2 · 04/09/2024 15:34

Nearly all fashion journalism is incredibly badly written, though. They are all very attached to naff turns of phrase like whisper it, that add absolutely nothing but are very irritating.
