AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

Apparently it's going to be all full length skirts, riding boots (woo hoo), long macs, statement shoulders oh and a lot of khaki green. I'm ok with 3 out of the 5

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/08/2024 12:16

Anyway, from what I’ve seen in fashion press, dark red/wine bags and shoes, clothes more earthy browns/greens not lots of grey and black this year.

there does seem to be more suits and tailoring, are we all getting smarter again?

lots of pointed shoes in the shops this week, less of the square toe looks. Not sure if that’s actually in fashion for winter or just because it’s wedding season. Anyone know what we’re doing with boots this year?!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/08/2024 12:18

Oh cross post @Itsmeamandaberry - riding boots then. Flat long boots seem acceptable fashion!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 17/08/2024 12:19

I refuse to wear what the teenagers I teach wear - black leggings every day with socks and crocs or flesh coloured tight outfits. Surely those don't look good on 40 year olds?

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 17/08/2024 12:20

I'd like to wear Claudia Winkleman's clothes, ideally :)

What I seen was a lot of cropped blazers instead of the oversized long ones.

I'm on the look out for a long khaki Mac but as a plus size person I might struggle.

Surely each 40 year old can choose for themselves?

Does any adult need to be told what they are allowed to wear? (Outside of any prescribed uniform.)

M and S usually have a good selection of macs.

"I generally dress like I'm solving a crime in Copenhagen..'

Love it 🤣

I've bought burgundy Adidas trainers, a khaki shirt in the John Lewis sale and a Toteme coat dupe from Boden. I'm not doing animal print though.

Well damn I've got dark red boots but they're square toed!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/08/2024 12:48

Christ sake - of course any adult can wear what they want. This is a thread asking what’s in fashion this season, it’s not compulsory for any adult to be wearing what’s in fashion (bar some people who work in the fashion industry!), but the idea that there’s not different fashions for teens to older women is obviously bollocks.

the OP wanted to know roughly the trends in fashion next year, and specifically for her age group not the fashions going to be targeted at “only just adults”. Pretending that there’s not clear different fashions between teens and older women just makes you look unobservant.

Why are people suddenly saying plaid? What happened to tartan?

People have said plaid forever! Tartan is a named plaid.

Kipperthedawg · 17/08/2024 12:51

Hmm I suit pastels more I think. Definitely not khaki. I could do grey. Is grey going to be in? I don't really care in terms of fashion but being able to actually buy clothes would be useful!

Yes, grey is also in 😀

My main concern is what I'm going to wear my 4 year old Grensons with, because I'm at the "skinny jeans feel weird" stage in the cycle of fashion. I might just have to carry on in trainers and barrel legs.

I generally dress like I'm solving a crime in Copenhagen, for any fans of the Bridge or Forbrydelsen. Fairisle slouchy jumpers a-gogo. I'm sure there'll be some of those in the country-trend.

I'm seeing that skinny jeans are back. Oversized plaid (/checked/tartan) blazers or longer length trench coats and knee high boots with skinnies. Which is all quite Claudia in Traitors. Welcome to 2012! (Which I'm thrilled about, as a millennial).

Kipperthedawg · 17/08/2024 13:18

Ok, so plaid is tartan. I thought we'd all been watching too much clueless.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/08/2024 13:28

Theremedy · 17/08/2024 04:16

I definitely want to get some dark red boots, probably knee high as I don’t have any high boots at the moment, only chelsea boots.

I have decided to treat myself to a cashmere cardigan this year, probably M&S. Probably black, or should I get a different colour?

Is there a wine or cranberry shade. If you’re getting into AW colours then that would be a lovely addition.

My DD likes cardigans buttoned up like a jumper with black trousers or jeans. She’s more likely to go to Uniqlo but their colours can be a bit meh

Cantonet · 17/08/2024 13:36

@theremedy I love the Cappuccino & petal pink colour ways in the Cashmere. They can be worn over a vest top so it falls slightly off one shoulder with the top button undone. The Cappucino will pair with browns/Burgundy's.

Kipperthedawg · 17/08/2024 13:37

In 1999/2000 I recall the colours being grey and red/burgundy and lots of chenille. Are we just rebooting that?

MorrisZapp · 17/08/2024 13:41

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/08/2024 14:32

Same here, these are all colours which suit me, as do wide-leg trousers, and I love a bit of leopard print.

Fashion at the moment is working well for me. I hope wide-leg and barrel jeans last as long as skinnies did.

They won't

MorrisZapp · 17/08/2024 13:47

The two tips I always give are firstly, Audrey Coyne on YouTube. Her summer recommendations are farcical as she's a very formal, conservative dresser who favours structure at all costs. She's brilliant at autumn and winter though, her autumn prediction videos are always brilliant and dare I say given the glacial pace of cold weather fashion, her last three annual videos are effectively current.

Second tip is the fashion section of The Times, it appears every Wednesday. The editor is Anna Murphy who is MN demographic and bleeds Me&Em, Cos etc but her general advice is just brilliant and the younger fashion writers who don't always agree with her are excellent too.

MorrisZapp · 17/08/2024 13:51

'Everyone can wear anything they like' is the most pointless observation ever made in a style forum, can we just fucking ban it once and for all.

InTheBleakMidsummer · 17/08/2024 13:53

I do hope you’re not deliberately misinterpreting what I’ve said, @MorrisZapp?

Yes I remember that. Wonder if we are going to see snaffles all over bags and boots again? I remember really wanting a pair of burgundy patent knee high boots with snaffles in about 1997!

It always comes around again. It’s why I’m hoping for purple and brocade.
chenille is a ‘ mare , any I have owned either got holes in it or exploded in the washing machine spin

i don’t think I’ve bought chenille since 2000 as I was such as disaster with it. Though now I’d wash it in a net bag like I do with any delicates
