AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

@MorrisZapp what's a field coat?

Cantonet · 18/08/2024 21:56

I think it's a wax type coat like A Barbour or a Utility type in khaki /Brown.

Cantonet · 18/08/2024 21:57

MorrisZapp thanks for that Video link.
I've subscribed.

Mindfulmeltdowns · 19/08/2024 08:01

Thanks for the boot link!

Do long boots work for bottom heavy people? Maybe they're more flattering paired with dresses rather than trousers?

JMAngel1 · 19/08/2024 08:40

Ooh good to see high boots in - though I’ve been wearing mine a good few years now - love a slouchy suede block heel knee high boot. Would love to get some in the burgundy shade that’s in.

I’m excited as a lot of the colours are good for me - burgundy, olive green, khaki and browns all suit me. Might be tempted by a burgundy wool wrap coat if I see a nice one.

Think I’ll swerve leopard print - at over 50, I fear I would be pushing my luck 😂 - prefer zebra but more for summer.

BangingOn · 19/08/2024 08:46

@Mindfulmeltdowns I am also bottom heavy and find that the right boots look really flattering with skirts and dresses, with trousers definitely doesn’t work for me. But I don’t really suit trousers anyway and the only trousers I own are sportswear.

@JMAngel1 I love a slouchy suede block heel too and could do with a new pair as my suede boots have seen better days. I could easily buy another 3-4 pairs this autumn but will need to be restrained.

I want everything in Envoy of Belfast but I especially want the tweed jacket and the black dress.

ECole de Curiosités Black dress

I have a Casey Casey double rideux skirt in a sort of army camouflage and I love this one

I don't like "jewel colours"- the pharse maked makes me think of Bombshell dresses. I don't like animal print.

This skirt is lovely but it is going to blow neck high at the first puff of wind.

It doesn't. I have one from last season in different colours. That's never happened.

Look at those camel toe shoes 😂😂

And the orange hat 😂

AskZoltar · 19/08/2024 09:03

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle That herringbone jacket is to die for.

WhenWillWanksWildly · 19/08/2024 09:15

Loving the boots and all things burgundy, olive, grey, and brown. All stalwarts in my wardrobe. I’d like a nice brown cosy cardigan or jumper.

sausawyee · 19/08/2024 09:19

I remember burgundy from 1970 or 1971 😂 hated it then and still hate it now. It's like a school uniform - a colour that can't make up its mind what it wants to be 😂 dull and safe but not as extreme as black, a bit bright but not as adventurous as raspberry 😂😂

I'm shocked by people who will bring things out of the wardrobe or hope they are " in" because someone has said it's ok to wear it. I love fashion and to see what is about but I'm never dictated to by statements by some fashion person whose job it is to do so.

I love that kind of herringbone/plaid/houndstooth pattern (TBH I like any pattern that isnt floral!).
But I already bought a blazer, knee length trench and pair of trousers in this pattern so I think Im sorted!

Just goes to show you should hang onto things you love though. I only wanted the trousers coz I threw a pair out very similar that I loved but didnt fit....

MorrisZapp · 19/08/2024 09:23

Chocolate brown is my lifelong vibe. I had a brown childhood and still adore cork tiles.

I own no black leather shoes or accessories.

My nineties leather chocolate brown blazer no longer fits in quite the same way and DP calls it the Donnie Brasco but who knows, this could be the year 🤔🤣

sausawyee · 19/08/2024 09:24

Oh yes if you lived in the 1970s you will forever HATE brown 😂

AW 24, what’s in style?
Cantonet · 19/08/2024 09:36

I was born in the 60's & still love Brown. Burgundy not so much, but yes to dark Khaki & leopard print. In fact leopard never really went away or was that just me 😳
Brown leather/suede jackets were popular around 2004 at least where I was living ( non-uk) so I have several that my kids have now taken off my hands.

Existingbudhet · 19/08/2024 09:38

Burgundy?? Didn't Bodie wear a burgundy box jacket back in the erm, 80's? Horrible colour

It may be a horrible colour on you but on some people it’s stunning. I have copper blonde hair and green eyes and it really suits me. Glad it’s back in (although I usually wear it anyway - just glad there will be more choice/availability).
I’ve seen grey mixed in with burgundy and then also olive. Both really beautiful colour combos that look more chic than either colour paired with black or brown. Definitely going to go this route.

henlake7 · 19/08/2024 10:27

I think certain colours have uniform connotations and that puts people off. Mainly school uniform colours so grey, navy, bottle green and....burgundy!
I stayed away from navy for ages because not only was it my school uniform but also my work uniform! I now realiese its actually a really good basic and suits me so have invested in some navy pieces.

While (as discussed mulllltiple times on this thread alone) it's fine to wear what you like, rotating boots or colours or midi vs mini skirts or whatever is an easy way to refresh and update your wardrobe. I don't think anyone is avoiding wearing something because someone hasn't said it's okay to wear, more that people who are interested in fashion (hence being on this forum) have probably been wearing chunky ankle boots for a few years as they were on trend and are now pleased that knee highs are back for a change. I'm sure we'll all still wear our chunky ankle boots at times as they're so comfy and practical.

MorrisZapp · 19/08/2024 11:20

Burgundy is a beautiful autumn choice for those of us who look dreadful in bright red. And no, there isn't a red lipstick for everyone.

BangingOn · 19/08/2024 11:29

@JudgeBurrito very well put! It also helps when something is on trend as there is a greater selection available in the shops. I’ve not stopped wearing long boots the past few years, but it’s been harder to find ones I like compared to the choice of ankle boots.

henlake7 · 12/08/2024 12:09

There is no such thing as age appropriate...its a construct of the fashion industry.
If you have smoking hot legs at the age of 70 then show those suckers off!

I love this comment!

JudgeBurrito · 19/08/2024 11:35

@BangingOn Exactly. I got a lovely pair of knee high kitten heeled boots about this time last year from Zara actually. I also got a nice burgundy shoulder bag about 5 years ago but have barely used it what with covid (wasn't going anywhere worth using a nice bag) and then smaller crossbody bags being more on trend. It just didn't look right. I'll probably bring it out this winter, as it'll look more fitting given the burgundy trend.
