AW 24, what’s in style?

Theremedy · 12/08/2024 10:56

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

Ok, so plaid is tartan. I thought we'd all been watching too much clueless.

I thought plaid was just checked pattern but tartan is more intricate.

I can wear several my favourite is Black Watch
And no I’m not going to get all noughty about people appropriating tartan

'Everyone can wear anything they like' is the most pointless observation ever made in a style forum, can we just fucking ban it once and for all.

You can't ban what is true 🤪

Then close the forum? What about those of us who enjoy discussing clothes with specific reference to circumstances such as age, season, occasion, body type etc? 'do what you want' just renders us all null and void.

MorrisZapp · 17/08/2024 14:15

Big jumper, tight jeans. It served us well in the eighties and the Danish detective squad know it - not a barrel leg in sight.

My latest Scandi drama treat was End of Summer, set twenty years ago. Little denim jackets, tea dresses and VW bug cars. Bloody love it.

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/08/2024 14:21

I’ve got some old Fly London oxblood red Chelsea boots so hopefully they will count as in

gardenmusic · 17/08/2024 14:22

wine-y red My favourite.
There is a lot of plum, too.

JaneJeffer · 17/08/2024 14:22

I don't think the two viewpoints cancel each other out @MorrisZapp. I don't like the recent trend on here of jumping on anyone who mentions age either. Yes you can wear whatever the teenagers are wearing no matter what age you are but who wants to do that in reality? Neither do I want to dress like my mother even though I also have the freedom to do so. I think it's the accusations of ageism rather than the wear what you want thing that is the problem on here lately.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/08/2024 14:24

Well of course everyone can wear what they like - that’s not to say they won’t look dated, unfashionable, or like they’ve nicked their dds clothes, or just like they are having some sort of breakdown.

More importantly, whenever you put that on a style and beauty thread, you will always sound like the sort of joyless dick who thinks silly women should stop talking about fashion because you are better than them. There is no way to post that statement without outing yourself as the dullest of self important people.

now go find a handbag thread to tell them the genius idea of using a bag for life and going on a mini break with the money instead. (Mini breaks always being the better use of any spare money and in no way a waste of money.)

MorrisZapp · 17/08/2024 14:27

Yes and it goes both ways. Nowt worse than asking 'is x still in style?' to have a barrage of 'my fashionable teenage daughter wouldn't be seen dead etc' which makes one lose the will to live.

DoubleCoatedDogs · 17/08/2024 14:28

The Stella McCartney coat in the Vogue article is SO gorgeous.

It's as annoying as "wouldn't it be dull if we all thought the same?", inserted into every thread where a good ding dong of a debate is happening, by people who have nothing more interesting to contribute.

Ironically, it's about the dullest thing you can say.

Ooh one I've not seen. Thanks 🙏🏻
Love a scandi/european drama. Have just about gone through them on Walter presents/Netflix and
A/W is not the same without a good scandi drama on the box.
I love A/W fashion and all the things I love about it are on trend.

They won't

Well I shall be clinging to them until well past fashionable, like skinnies fans do now.

I hope skinnies don't come back for men though. They look nice (if dated) on women, but I loathe how they look on men. I can't put my finger on why, but the silhouette actually gives me the ick, especially when the fabric is slightly loose around the arse. Same with tapered joggers. Bleurgh.

PrimalLass · 17/08/2024 17:37

I bought a Ted Baker tailored coat on Vinted last winter that has a subtle tartan/check so will enjoy wearing that again.

Theremedy · 17/08/2024 18:13

WingBingo · 17/08/2024 09:26

Sounds like Claudia’s wardrobe from The Traitors should about cover it.

Yes!! This so much!!

I bought this from Vinted which I will pair with skinnies/leggings and riding boots/country boots. I can also wear a long sleeve underneath in colder weather.

I think you are me. Love a barrel leg and wide leg jean - ditched skinnies back in 2016 - and seeing them on men makes me want to barf.

I'll put up with skinnies because I basically buy jeggings and have not been able to find jeans that look nice for about ten years but agree on men it's disgusting. Teamed with a tight tee always just makes me imagine them hopping around the bed trying to get them on, and I kind of imagine the material near the skin. I also find them a bit poser-y. Yuck yuck yuck.

BangingOn · 17/08/2024 21:46

My red boots don’t have a pointed toe, but they will be worn constantly anyway as (even in the sale) they were more than I would usually spend. The colour is much nicer IRL, although it’s a shame the dark green are out of stock or I’d have been tempted by those also. https://www.meandem.com/knee-high-stretch-leather-boot-scarlet-red

I noticed a lovely deep red, almost aubergine, cardigan from Zara earlier. I’m not always convinced by the quality of their knitwear, although I’ve just sold a couple of Sezane cardigans on Vinted as they were too itchy, so expensive isn’t necessarily better.

I have no idea if pointed toes are the thing we should be wearing this season- just seen a lot suddenly! But it could just be wedding season and pointy toe looks a bit better with formal dresses.

MorrisZapp · 18/08/2024 16:22

Perfect timing! Audrey's new fall video has dropped. I love it every year and this is no exception. She's an elegant American with a very particular take on style, I'm a tad scruffier and looser myself but her delivery is just beautiful and I could listen all day.

Capri pants, dear mumsnetters?

Dark red, olive getting plenty of airtime along with field coats. Enjoy 😊
