I've made a HUGE mistake with my hair. I had it cut yesterday and the stylist cut it FAR too short. It used to hang below my shoulders and yesterday I told her she could chop a bit off and give me a long bob, but I stressed that I needed to be able to tie it up as I'm a runner and I can't bear having hair hanging down my neck. She started cutting at the back and I could immediately tell she was cutting too much off, but it was too late.

She gave me what I'd describe as a short bob. It's chin-length. I can tie up the top, but the sides fall down and the back is really short and I absolutely HATE it. My kids said 'Oh wow, you had a lot cut off' and DH said 'You look like a mum'. It's frumpy, it's horrible and I'm so miserable. Hair only grows 1/4 of an inch a month so it's going to take 8 months to grow 2 inches, which I estimate will make it tie-up-able and not quite so hideously frumpy. I cried last night when I realised how bad it looks. I have no idea what to do, other than wear a paper bag over my head for the next 8 months. My hair is fine and flyaway and slightly wavy, which makes it hard to style too. Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you washed and styled it yourself yet? Often it’s not as bad once you’ve done that. But other than just patiently waiting for it to grow (which it will!) your options are either go and get it cut into a more ‘now’ style or figure out ways to tie it up/ clip it until it grows out.

But I bet it’s not as bad as you think it is!

KirstenBlest · 24/07/2024 19:27

Wear a baseball cap for running.
Tie your back in a french plait.

The running will help ease the stress.

I gave up suggesting anything to hairdressers years ago. 'No more than an inch off' is usually interpreted as 'at least 4 inches off'

HippyKayYay · 24/07/2024 19:27

A softer way to style which my hairdresser showed me when mine was that length is to take smallish sections from the front, pull back and twist and fix with a clip. It you do 4 or so sections it looks less severe than a half-pony

Let’s have a look

I've gone chin length bob, and what encouraged me having grown it out last time was watching loads of short hair style tutorials online. They're not difficult and it gave me ideas to get it off my face, which is how I have it 90% of the time.

Bobs are quite trendy atm. Check out some styling tips for when it's down too.

Not frumpy imo.

magicmushrooms · 24/07/2024 19:31

I am curious, did your hairdresser have a similar style/lenght?

for running maybe a headband. Maybe try small hair claws (inky & mole do nice ones). once it starts to grow it should be easier, first two weeks are always the worst.

Doggymummar · 24/07/2024 19:32

I had extensions in Feb when mine was like this they are shoulder length and my natural hair has grown down to the same length now.

jackstini · 24/07/2024 19:36

In case it makes you feel better, hair grows faster in summer, about 1/2" per month

Could you post a pic and we can suggest things?

cheezncrackers · 24/07/2024 19:42

Here is the horror. I think I might have to get extensions. How much do they cost? I'm thinking horrible price probably?

The Jennifer Aniston style was what I was aiming for - but sadly not what I got 😒

@cheezncrackers it looks so nice I swear , it suits you ! But anyways , can’t you use hair clips to pull up the few hairs that come out from the sides when you put your hair up ?

theemmadilemma · 24/07/2024 19:49

I think styling it either wavy or sleeker would be the way to go. Styling is your friend basically. Otherwise I think it suits you too!

ThePoetsWife · 24/07/2024 19:50

Wear a hair band for running - that's what I do with my short bob at the gym

Thesecretingredientiscrime · 24/07/2024 19:53

It honestly looks nice. If you wanted to style it slightly differently, you could perhaps add a bit more volume and a few waves? It doesn't need it though.
If you're going down the extension route, you can expect to pay £400+. But you really don't need to.

Allthislovelygreen · 24/07/2024 19:55

I was expecting Gwendoline from Wallace and gromit...but it's a really stylish haircut! You could experiment with styling (big rollers in the morning with look good for a bouncy look), but I think it looks nice like that.

*Ex hairdresser here

Blesseddaycommander · 24/07/2024 19:55

You could make it look more youthful by having bangs or a soft side fringe?

LivelyBlake · 24/07/2024 19:56

How do you style it when you wash it at home?

I'd try straightening irons and tucking one side behind your ear. Hairband for running.

Libre2 · 24/07/2024 19:57

I really like it - it looks lovely! Definitely Alice band affair for running.

Percivaleverett · 24/07/2024 19:59

Bit rude of your DH to say you look like a mum. I mean I know you are a mum but I hate when people use it in a disparaging way about a style of dressing or haircut. I think the cut looks good on you by the way but as others said you could style it in various ways to give a different impression.

mybeautifulhorse · 24/07/2024 20:00

I'm a runner and my hair is a bob a little bit shorter than yours (don't mind looking like a mum btw, it's what I am) and I can still tie it up. Just stick a couple of grips in the sides and bob's, pardon the pun, your uncle. Or stick a cap on.

It's really not that bad, I can't bear long hair so keep mine a chin length bob but do colour it so it looks a bit more interesting - could you try that while it's growing out? Also you will be surprised how quickly it grows. I do know how it feels to have a hair 'disaster' though and that panicky feeling, but give it a week or two and you'll probably like it more.

mybeautifulhorse · 24/07/2024 20:02

Also, no shade but it doesn't look like you've styled it at all. Do it super poker straight and it will sit blunter and look longer and more trendy, or try curling/waving it.

Blingismything · 24/07/2024 20:04

It would look good graduated at the back into the neck, this would still look the same from the front and would still be able to grow longer at the sides.

FourToTheMFingFloor · 24/07/2024 20:06

I think it's quite chic! Although not what you asked for of course.

cheezncrackers · 24/07/2024 20:09

Thanks for the tips. I don't have any big rollers, but I could get some. I can't use straighteners, because my hair just breaks off if I do. It's already highlighted and it's quite fine, so I don't think it can handle anything other than the most gentle treatment. I don't really style it. Usually, I just wash, blow dry and either leave it down or tie it up in a pony tail or a messy bun. That's why I had it cut a bit shorter, so it would have more of a style. £400 is probably a bit much. I'm worried that extensions will damage it too. Will they pull it out? Make it hard to care for?
